Most gladiators were actually obese, as a layer of fat would protect them from mortal wounding. After all, gladiators were expensive and promoters best interests were on them surviving a fight. Edit: my point was is that they didn't look like Russell Crowe (or Kirk Douglas for that matter).
@V2011F2 жыл бұрын

They were similar to the Georgian weight lifter. Well, maybe not as large, but it was still muscle and not in the same sense as your regular bulk or cut.
@TehReasoning2 жыл бұрын
I don't think obese but more like those world strongest lifter, builder,loggers type bulky husky men. They weren't sumo wrestlers size or anything, more like thick but had a degree of muscle still like world strongest men build. Some can even be similar to Viking men of old times. It's true it better competitor stay alive because great gladiator weren't easy to find and kinda expensive to promote, so losing one definitely was not good thing in terms of money. Some were favorites so you definitely want them around to bring in crowds.

An angry peasent mob barged in a castle, stabbed the black knight in the eye slit, cut off his limbs (which I didn't know it was a Monty Python reference at the time) and circled around him holding end of his bowels. That scene engraved so deep in my child brain, I never even considered watching single episode of Simpsons.
