And of course, I was SO excited that she made a video about her experience with the IUD! I’m done with the negative stigma surrounding women talking about our bodies-it’s time for change! I think calling it "uncomfortable" is limiting. I know some women who describe it as uncomfortable but for me it was fairly bad pain, worse than any menstrual cramp and I had to do a lot of deep breathing to get through it. Other women describe it as extremley severe pain. Its kind of crazy that there is no pain relief offered.

Please, let’s all rephrase about the pain. It can be very, very, very painful. I had a severe amount of pain aswel. Way more then just period cramps. Or ‘uncomfortable pain’. It was the worst pain Ive experienced in my life, even though I can take pain pretty wel in used painkillers. I was prepared for the worst so it worked out. But it can be very painful (even with painkillers). Not all body’s are the same! My body responded with pain for 4 more months. Slowly degrading to ‘just’ pain for a couple of days before my period now (8 months). My periods are way less heavy and pain free. So I decided to keep it in and medicate throughout the pain (consulting with ceveral gyno’s ofcourse). The pain shifted from during my period to before. I’ve accepted it. I chose an IUD to manage my extreme periods. Not for birthcontrol.

Yeah, mine felt like I was being stabbed. It was unbelievably painful and I struggled to stay conscious. It was NOT just like a normal (or even intense) cramp. It was awful. But it was short (which is good, because if it had been any longer I would have thrown up)

Everyone I’ve heard talk about their IUD insertion says “it’s just feels like a period cramp” but when I had mine placed last month it felt like a period cramp times 10. It was so painful. I was sweating and trembling, I got nauseous and dizzy from the pain too. With that being said, my doctor and nurse were so kind. My doctor went as quickly as she could once the pain got really bad for me and my nurse held heat packs on my lower abdomen and held my hand when the pain got super intense. The actual insertion definitely hurt the worst but didn’t last very long. So for anyone that reads this and is considering it, know that for some people I guess it’s a bit more painful, so just make sure you have a kind and understanding medical team taking care of you! ❤️

I almost broke their speculum because she was expecting my uterus to be bigger or longer or whatever so she didn't just touch the end of my uterus. She stabbed it. So she then had to pull the measuring device back out of me and then reinsert to get an accurate measurement. Before she could readjust it they had to crank the speculum back open because I had reacted so severely that it clamped almost all the way shut. And when they were opening it back open they thought they were going to have to get another one because they thought it didn't have the strength to keep me open. Like it was severe pain. There is absolutely no reason that pain management isn't discussed prior to insertion. Pills you take beforehand, cervical block, or whatever the patient wants needs to be administered. "Its uncomfortable" ok well part of your job is to make me comfortable or I am going to someone else who will. I'm done being disappointed by doctors. Strikes such a nerve when they say "oh well you don't need it for this. Its a minor procedure." First of all you can't tell me what is minor for me or not. Second you won't know if I need it or not unless it is discussed. My experience was terrible getting it in, but I didn't have side effects from it until probably halfway through the second year. I'd get a lump in my boob that would radiate pain and swelling before and during my period. Once my period was over it would go away. Other than that I wouldn't say I had any other problems with it in. I switched to it because I can't take birth control pills. They make me severely sick. I was down to 95 lbs the first time I was on birth control because I could not hold down any food. I was throwing up everyday when I ate something. So I switched to a different pill a little later and it gave me severe pain sexually. I thought I was allergic to his sperm or something. I went to get it checked out and there wasn't anything they found. I made him get his sperm checked and the urologist said its probably my birth control. Switched to the patch and those went away. After a year or so on the patch my skin started to react to the sun. I would burn bad no matter how much sunscreen i put on. No matter how long I was out. So I needed to switch again so I chose the IUD and other than the insertion I am fine with it. I also chose the skyyla because it has the smallest dose of hormones out of all of them. After they inserted it she said I wouldn't be able to have any of the others because they were to big to fit into my uterus. Even though they tried to fight me on it because I went in knowing which one I was getting and they tried to tell me that my sister having cysts all over her breasts and ovaries because of the mirena didn't have anything to do with me. I said well I am not getting the mirena. I know which one I want. Anyways thats my experience with it. I am having a different doctor take it out really soon since the hubby wants a baby. I won't go back to the other doctor after the way they treated me. Stay healthy ladies, and switch doctors the moment they don't listen or respect you. I would rather drive an hour one way and get excellent care than stay with a doctor who doesn't care.

I just got my IUD a month ago! The one of the arms perforated my uterus at insertion the first time so I had to wait a while and have it redone. That was no fun and has me in fear that it could happen again, but that no period dream has kept me going! P.S. your complexion is stunning!

I remember the first IUD I had placed caused me to pass out. I was waiting in line at the reception desk after it had been placed. I was having strong cramping, and I just felt like I needed to sit down. My vision started going dark, and I took a step backwards and fell on my butt. Ears were ringing, tunnel vision, all of that fun stuff. But after I had some crackers and laid down for a few minutes I was absolutely fine.

If we wanted to be sedated during removal and insertion of a new IUD what type of anesthesia would be used? I definitely need something next time, the pain was absolutely horrible.

Thank you for doing this video. I had an IUD placed this week. I was super nervous but this video helped me be less nervous. The pain during the sounding and insertion was horrific. I had a vasovagal response. Had I known how horrifically painful but I hope it’s worth it.

I’ve seen so many horror stories about IUDs. I’ve heard them from people I know. Why don’t we use an anesthetic to get these in? It’s crazy. It makes no sense. I will never, ever get one.

I jave had 3 kids and horrendous period pain. I have had the mirena for over 15 yrs now due to severe heavy bleeding and severe low iron issues. I never get the mirena inserted withoutnbeing numbed up 1st. For ANYONE whi says the pain is like cramping is insane. It was by far the worst pain I have ever endured. Child birth was not even as painful as that

I had mirena before and I had heavy bleeding for three days and then had trouble walking then felt very sick and got a fever. When I went to get it removed the OBGYN told me she couldn’t find it. She then found it stuck to my walls and I was screaming and crying from the pain. Can you talk about uterine polyps? What happens after getting them removed?

The only objection I have is when you said that IUD insertion is a bit uncomfortable. I think that is the understatement of the universe. It literally feels like they take a steel rod and shove it through your soul. Yes, it’s very quick, but it’s still a steel rod through your soul you see a flash of light, you scream, bloody murder it’s the worst Pain ever experienced on this planet I’ve had four natural vaginal childbirths, two without any epidural or anything completely natural. And I can stand here today and tell you that the IUD insertion was beyond the most painful experience. I’ve had honestly love your video but I really think that Dr. should be more honest about the excruciating pain of iud insertion. 😅 other than that I love your video, and I appreciate you sharing some of your knowledge and education with us on these topics. I on the other hand, had a very different experience with the Mirena IUD. My side effects ranged from excruciating lower back pain, swollen breasts, painful nipples, cystic, acne on the sides of my mouth and chin ( Prior to Mirena iud I had beautiful skin and no acne since high school) and across my chin unexplainable bumps on my legs, depression, moodiness, three periods the first month, and no periods after that. My face began to look like shoe leather and I thought I was beginning to look more manly. I literally felt like I was dying. I felt like I had some sort of unexplainable infection that the doctors couldn’t find or some cancer or something. After watching a couple videos of other women’s experience with the Mirena iud, I put two and two together and realized it was my iud causing all these side effects. two nights ago. I removed the IUD at home. I did it very slowly and carefully after taking a nice warm, relaxing bath. I do not recommend that you try this at home !! This is just my experience. I woke up the next day and for the first time in months, my face was not painful and it was well on its way to healing. my lower back pain is completely gone. The bumps on my legs are healing. The depression is lifting and I am slowly feeling somewhat better !

Thank you for sharing your experience and also the other gal. I have had painful periods and very heavy periods. Right now my gyno put me on a low dose birthcontrol pill. I currently am a couple years in with a IUD. Thank you for explaining why the gyno suggested the pill on top of the mirena. It makes better sense.

Oh and forgot to ask. With my bad periods I always had abdominal cramping. When they measured my cervix, I had abdominal cramping but when they placed the IUD I had the strongest back cramping I'd ever experienced and felt clammy. I am concerned that when the time comes to take it out I will have more back cramping. And yes, I am intested in a video about the specific types of IUD. I am wondering if a smaller one would cause less back cramping.

The pain of my IUD insertion felt like I had been cut... and was being stabbed.. and it felt stabby about a day later then chilled out... every time I forget about my traumatic experience.. my uterus starts cramping like, " Hey you, you put something in me and I don't like it." Just got it on the 4th this month and its now the 21st.. I think Ive had a week where I haven't bled..

My mireena coil misplaced! I use it for my perimenopause in conjunction with the oestragel, I'm bleeding heavy , the dr gave me transmatic acid 500mg and body identical progesterone utragestran , I'm progesterone sensitive as I suffer from PMS, so I use the progesterone vaginally! IUD a NIGHTMARE 😢❤

I would not recommend driving for IUD insertion. My cramping was so bad and I had constant pain in my uterus area. I had to drive home with my seat reclined. It's 5 wks later, and I'm still cramping and uncomfortable most days. Idk if this is normal or not

Yeah for me personally I wasn't on any hormonal birth control for about 10 years. I feel like as I've gotten older I've developed more PMS symptoms that would leave me feeling more emotional if I didn't take certain precautions. Things like making sure I got enough sleep and going to sleep at a decent time while also avoiding sugar and basically increasing orgasms so my mood would be okay.

The iud itself wouldn't be poking your husband, it could be the strings. The strings soften over time so he will be fine.

Yes! I had the copper IUD for 1.5 year.. I gave it’s time and the cramps were awful & never got better for me. I learned how to manage it with Ibuprofen.. they were the absolute worse at the beginning though! Very sharp. Another side effect can be heavier periods.. mine was slightly heavier but just on day 2.. but everyone’s experience is always so different. My cousin has had her copper IUD for 7 years and is fine.. I finally made the decision to switch to the Mirena.. so I’m starting over but so good so far..

Pill only 1 year made me snap when I would pick up my son at my moms she said anything I would snap, so that was not for me, I think it changed me to much so I got the IUD and have had it for 39 years and will not give it back. to much pain to get it, and I dont need it husband was fixed before I met him.

Yes it's normal and that's actually one of the reasons why I refuse to get one even if the non-hormonal one supposedly doesn't mess with your estrogen levels.

I'm having a copper insertion this week but I'm very nervous as immediately after (not during) mirena insertion years ago I experienced nausea, shook uncontrollably and passed out multiple times travelling home. My pain threshold is high due to other medical procedures but I can't take anti-inflammatories as I have circulatory issues. I also have stroke history (after mirena) so this is really a last resort as I need to avoid all hormones. Anyone have any tips or a backup plan? To be clear this was NOT a pain issue, and my docs have just brushed it off as that.

You could also ask your doctor about spermicide and a cervical cap or a diaphram- non hormonal.

I wonder why do people prefer the hormonal IUD when there is also a non-hormonal version available? Talking especially about people who do not need the hormonal form of birth control for other health reasons other than avoiding getting pregnant

Probably because with the copper iud the period is heavier and if you already have a heavy period it would make it worse

I'd say the latter one is less all-encompassing and less invasive to the way you feel, act or even look like.

​@@Mrkva22296 Yeah it's not just a heavier flow it's also a constant cramping and sporadic spotting. Not to mention your body can develop copper toxicity and there's been some debate about whether or not it influences your estrogen level.

I kinda did. It fell out a bit so I pulled it the rest of the way. There can be complications but I rather pull it out for free then spend over a hundred bucks for a "nurse" to the same. I have heard at the ER that not all know how to do it so they wing it and it turns out fine. Just do it yourself unless you feel more comfortable going in. I will say though, if something does happen when removing it yourself you would have to go to the ER so be careful

I have my tubes tied and I have heavy bleeding at times I am going to be 50 yrs old next year I don't want to wait for 6 months for my self to stop bleeding I hope that I can just stop when I am at the age of 50 it smells down there even though I take baths I am not going to have this in me my opinion my daughter has it in her to prevent pregnancy and she likes it but is there anything else to take instead of pills for women who are about to be 50

So many bad experiences . I was so nervous but took some tramadol that I had left over after a miscarriage about 1.5 hours before . Felt two cramps and took a regular Tylenol in the evening. I also gave birth vaginally 6 years prior. I feel like these videos just scare people. Everyone is different. Just like child birth. You won’t know your experience until you know. Don’t freak yourself out watching this stuff. Just use it for information.

@@SS-qg9jk hey, I got it in November of 2021 (around the time I wrote the comment) as a second form of local treatment for my endometriosis (I used the nuvaring for the first 9 months and eventually both at the same time to see how I felt). Everyone’s experience is different, but for me it just was not best. Starting with the horrible odor that went through my clothes, more aggressive BV, and occasional bad cramps… at some point 2 months ago my fatigue got bad and cramps came back and I wouldn’t stop spotting. Turned out my thyroid was a bit out of whack so maybe that was it but I did feel different when I took it out, I was desperate to do so. I made sure to give it a fair and unbiased chance first though!! I read the good the bad and the ugly but always had good expectations despite the occasional side effects. But the moment my experience became more negative (constantly) than good like constant cramps 5 months in, I gave it the boot bc I’d rather get surgery again for endometriosis if I have to. That’s the other thing, for me it was medically necessary, otherwise I wouldn’t have done it tbh. I’m with the nuvaring alone now and that works a lot better for me. @@hristinauzunova8925 I’m going through the same thing; it’s now 7 days in and things are getting better thankfully; appetite had returned for the most part and the pain/cramping is starting to lighten up (was almost debilitating on days 4 and 5. Still a bit tired.

@Genn H it's now almost a month later, since one week I have such a small amount of bleeding every day. Today is the first time after so long that I have again a little bit cramps and spotting, but not any other symptoms!

yes, mine migrated down and was sitting in my cervix 😬. i had to go to the ER bc urgent care was closed and i was in so much pain and i could feel the plastic of the iud. i was bleeding so much and i was lightheaded and dizzy. miserable. they had to remove it there and today i got it re inserted. all the ER stuff happened yesterday lol. it is so scary😩. but i’m hoping it’ll be worth it. 💜💜💜💜💜✨✨✨✨✨

I’m currently dealing with an unplanned pregnancy 3 months postpartum and I don’t think I’m keeping it, we were careful with condoms and it still happened. I’m looking into the copper iud. I have interstitial cystitis that used to be terrible but has improved, would an iud worsen it? The pill worsened it from hormones.

I’m 6.5 months postpartum and still experience hair loss, I do have marina iud. So far I am spotting randomly without having a period and minor cramping. Is something wrong with my iud or is my body rejecting it? I have taking several pregnancy tests and so far no positive.

Great question! Yes you can! The iud is placed inside the uterus so number of Fallopian tubes or ovaries doesn’t matter!

I friend just lost her aunt after losing alot of blood when the nurse was inserting the IUD.. Even the nurses can't explain wat happened but she started bleeding heavily the died after a few minutes.. Every one is asking wat happened! Wat could have caused the bleeding cos suddenly they removed it but the bleeding never stopped until she died

I have my tubes tied and I am going to be 50yrs I would rather have the birth control pill instead of the IUD I have bleeding problems I want to remove it I am confused about I have my tubes tied y am I even taking birth control of anything I don't want to wait for 6 months when I am going to be 50 my mom stopped right at the age of 50 there has to be another thing to do besides keep taking pills

I'm thinking that you have little sympathy for those alpha males (Bullies!) that think a woman should be chattel and that Men should run the world. (ugh!) They have done SO well in the past! I met a hot chick in high school, married her, and we have been together for 52 years. She doesn't take any crap from me, never did. i have a very very high pain threshold and i found it EXTREMELY uncomfortable. the cramping afterwards almost unbearable. i didn’t cry or yell or freak out. but i did not feel okay

I wonder if a worried state of mind is a big factor. I mean it's a foreign object going up there... But I'd take pain over an unwanted pregnancy.

Iud made me bleed 24/7 with all the uncomfortable symptoms of a period. Never stopped even after 2 and a half months. Was HORRIBLE. idk why so many people love it or how it stopped their periods when I was just bleeding the WHOLE time.
