People who actually care about the franchise don’t give a hoot about diversity. If you write good characters, regardless of background, the audience will like them. If your “likable trait” is skin color, doesn’t that say more about the writers’ racial motivations than the audiences’? It’s a pity because this show, I think, has all the right “parts,” and none of the execution. I just wanted Obi-wan Seven Samurais some Sand People. None of this other stuff.
@ThreadBareHope12342 жыл бұрын
Yes. One way of looking at the diversity argument is not just that there've been black actors in Star Wars sense the original trilogy, but we've actually seen diversity sense the first film. The main cast includes two robots that are very different from each other, someone of an alien race (Chewy), and four humans who's personalities and roles are all different... And one of them is a woman of power. Soooooo diversity in Star Wars is long overdue??

Artistic nihilism is a great way to put it. I as a black man was repulsed by Reva. She has identical flaws as Kylo Ren except for now since she’s black, the writers have a ready made shield for criticism: “You’re racist if you don’t like her.” There is absolutely nothing more sickening, depraved and repulsive than using my skin color as defense for their incompetence, ineptitude, nihilism and disdain for merit.
@jpacker79772 жыл бұрын
I don't understand how more people don't realize the covert racism being displayed here. In lieu of writing a fantastic and original story with a character who is incidentally black, they have made her ethnicity a subtext plot device and are essentially using her as a prop for the conveyance of a social message. The plot is predictable. As the over-the-top villain, she will experience a character reversal resulting in her redemption, and ipso facto become the hero of the story. The anger so many fans have is not that a black woman is being elevated, but that through classic bait-and-switch, they have taken what the fans wanted and expected and completely inverted it. They are given the story they didn't want, and are told they better like it whether they actually do or not. They can do whatever they like with the new trash they make, but retconning the original story is completely unforgivable. It is creative and cultural vandalism. @@jennybeard6341 It is not necessarily about any political alignment - one can be on the Right or the Left (or care not a whit about politics either way) and still be annoyed by the simple failure of storytelling technique on display in Disney Star Wars. The failures of continuity, world building, characterisation, and plot structure are plain for all to see, and the fact that so many of them are entirely unforced mistakes that are subsequently covered up by a craven attempt at the collective character assassination of the entire fan base as being some sort of inherently bigoted far Right extremists - claims entirely a variance with the reality on the ground - only compounds the issue. When a supposed artist (if you can grace the Disney franchise vandals with such a grandiose term) is so utterly self obsessed, so mired in prating self righteousness, that it is literally impossible in their mind that they could make any mistake or that their output could harbour any flaws, and would rather believe that an entire fandom (numbered in the tens of millions world wide at a conservative estimate don't forget) exists as some sort of bigoted hive mind, then that refusal to deal with any criticism (or engage with inconvenient reality at all) can't help but impact on the quality of their... lets be generous and call it 'art'. Of course, that is the more generous interpretation. The alternative is that they know they are producing substandard entertainment and simply don't care. Lacking artistic integrity (or any form of integrity), they are quite prepared to peddle what they know full well to be a false narrative about the fandom for no higher or more noble reason than to protect Disney share values from any and all criticism by painting anyone who dares suggest the House of Mouse is anything less than down right divine as some sort of jackbooted thug. If you doubt that Disney and its employees are capable of such unethical behaviour, I would point out that this is the same corporation that is on public record as having thanked the Chinese authorities for allowing it to film the live action Mulan remake in the same province that houses concentration camps for the Uighur ethnic and religious minority, where gross human rights abuses in the pursuit of so called 're-education' (more accurately termed cultural genocide) have repeatedly occurred. So much for Disney's claims of moral superiority. That is something any person of principle - whether on the Left, the Right, or politically unaligned - can and should find objectionable.

Definitely. I think a lot of this gets lost in the heat of battle when it comes to much-loved IPs like Star Wars and Star Trek. People on both sides - understandably - spend the vast majority of their time arguing points like canon and politics, which are undeniably important. But at least as bad, albeit in subtler ways, is the foundational stuff - writing, motivations, incentives, logical progression, reliance on luck an led stupidity to make progress, character consistency, etc., ad nauseam. I think that goes a long way toward explaining why, as all these beloved stories are being torn down, nothing new is arising to replace them. It’s not just that we can’t write Star Wars, it’s that we seem to be incapable of writing anything.

To see so many IPs attacked and ruined so quickly, it is not a mistake, it is on purpose (Halo, Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, even the end of GOT). Honestly, creative genius has been stifled by the "delayed adolescence" of our modern culture. To write something that is meaningful, a writer requires the ability to abstractly recognize the story in its full context. Honestly, I think you made a great point, that there are many fans who would make better writers. However, it's not like unbelievable authors haven't been involved in the Star Wars world! Nobody could find a writer like Terry Brooks, Dave Wolferton, R.A. Salvatore, etc? Maybe not to write the scripts, but at least manage the damn story boards. Does nobody notice that the existence of the inquisitors contradicts the fact that the Empire (except secretly the emperor ) does not believe in the Force.? Tarkin made this pretty clear and all the other generals and admirals on board the death star had no respect for the Force and any supernatural things. How would they maintain an institution of Force-sensitive operatives? The thought is absurd.
@silverstargaming202 жыл бұрын
Tarkin has no respect for the Jedi, due to their inability to go far enough to claim victory as a result of the code. He knows that Anakin is Vader, and while he openly disrespected the Grand Inquisitor in Rebels, the answer to your question is fear. Disobeying the Inquisitors (or at least the Grand Inquisitor) is like disobeying an order from Vader, and thus the Emperor himself. The entire foundation of the Empire is based on fear. Imagine being an admiral in the Empire, and you interfere with the Grand Inquisitor's mission, or God forbid Vader's, because you despise and don't respect any Force users. Suddenly you have an Imperial shuttle boarding your star destroyer, and within 5 minutes there's a lightsaber in your gut, or you're being choked to death or your neck is being snapped. I don't recall very well, but I'm pretty sure Vader force-choked an admiral on the Death Star for insulting the force and all who wield it. That is why the Inquisitors were respected. In fact, the Inquisitors were created to keep that fear fresh. All the Jedi feared them. The civilians feared them. Lower officers feared them.
@SammEater2 жыл бұрын
@@silverstargaming20 Tarkin yes, but the other Admirals also didn't seen to know what the Force was and most of them acted like it was either something old and useless or just fairtytales.
@silverstargaming202 жыл бұрын
@@SammEater Well, the reason being is that this was before George Lucas envisioned inquisitors. At the time there was just Vader and Palpatine. Most Imperial officers in the OT should have known about Jedi. After all, just 20 years before, the galaxy was full of them. However, again, Lucas didn't think about the Prequels, or really anything about the clone wars except that they existed. Obi-Wan was supposed to be this wise old hermit, yet a veteran of the Clone Wars. The only mention of it is in that one scene, and it was initially implied to have happened like 30-40 years ago. Well, it was half that. Again, the main elements of the OT can always be used seamlessly, but the finer details are often confusing, especially after seeing the Clone Wars, knowing they ended 19 years before the Battle of Yavin, knowing Tarkin knew the Jedi and knew Anakin became Vader. Everyone is confused as to why Kenobi is so old in the OT films, until they remember that Star Wars had JUST begun then. George Lucas didn't have anything besides the OT planned out. Star Wars was supposed to just be one movie initially. But now we have an expanded universe, through which other things that weren't explained in the OT are given an explanation.
@joshuabonesteel23032 жыл бұрын
In a galaxy of 1000's of planets and now only a handful of force users, it would probably be pretty easy for a number of imperial officers to have never seen an inquisitor or an emperor's hand for that matter. Heck, during the height of the Republic with 1000's of jedi knights, it was almost unheard of to see one on the outer rim. Even though they should be known, it is quite possible for many to go their entire lives and never see one.
@luxarcanae2 жыл бұрын
Long story short: Congrats you guys made me look up freaking rebels release date. So apperantly the Inquisitors are not a thing George Lucas made. There used to be a EU book in like 1989 that described them and some other stuff in the 90s but under Lucas they never saw an entry into star wars official stuff. The first time an inquisitor appeared was indeed star wars rebels. In the back of my mind I thought rebels was entirely a disney production and the reason why they canceled the clone wars (which is far supperior to rebels and I still say that canceling the clone wars was disneys first, almost worst and most stupid mistake when they took over star wars but thats besides the point) was because they wanted to push rebels instead. One duckduckgo search later and I know I was right. The inquisitors are entirely a disney BS thing and that's why you have to jump through several mental hoops and have at least one brain injury to make them make sense in the original trilogy. Though ngl, @JoshuaBonesteel that explaination I honestly would except if it was canon cause at least that doesn't require the brain injury.

They apparently have a direct line to reach him exactly where he is, all the way from Alderaan. And then later we see Bail teleport directly to Obi-Wan's random cave, just like that. It's just that easy for anyone to track him. If this was the case in Episode 4, why bother sending Leia on a risky mission to recruit him without his knowledge? I personally don't injoy rough language, but your videos are so well put together and your thoughts are expressed so compellingly it really doesn't bother me. Well done on this video.

So it turns out this love letter to Obi-Wan Kenobi was all about replacing him with a black woman. Who knew?

What message is Disney sending by making the black antagonist petulant, undisciplined and insubordinate?

An uppity gamer word. Great jawb Disney.

Ya know what’s funny? Even John Boyega hates how Disney treated Finn’s character, he AGREES with the critics, so does Mark Hamil.

perfectly said, nice to know others feel the same this show has been genuinely upsetting to watch so far, I am 22 years old and have grown up with Star Wars aswell. obi-wan has been such an iconic character for me and so many others an dits sad to see how Disney have handled this.

Man, your work is excellent. I haven't seen such a perfect mix of impartial analysis, cutting wit and that glorious accent, outside of a MauLer video lol. All the best to you, sir, hope we get a lot more in the future :)

The only way the girl playing Leia is 10 in real life is if she has the same dwarfism that Emmanuel Lewis has. She is entirely too small for a 10 year old. She looks like she's maybe 7 tops.
@plokoon42 жыл бұрын
I originally thought the same thing but I realized that cartie fisher was tiny so it kind of makes sense that she'd be way smaller than expected for a 10 year old
@jonathanfrost87672 жыл бұрын
@Melvin Deeply Proven wrong. Thanks Melvin. She definitely has a condition of some kind. Filming began in 2021. She's much too small for a normal 10 year old.

I've been critical of chase scenes in movies for my entire life, always screaming at the screen (either inwardly at the theatre or, at the consternation of my wife, outwardly at home) at some sort of ridiculous chase. But when the Leia chase scene finished, I just turned the show off. I couldn't even get mad due to how absurd it was.
@Mr79Shahin2 жыл бұрын
At least you saved yourself from the second such absurd chase scene in episode 2 - where she outruns Obi Wan ffs

Brilliant analysis! And you couldn't put it better: it's destroying the magic of the Original, and that is simply unforgivable.

Leia runs like a toddler. Why did they cast such a small child? She is an extra small 8 year old playing a 10 year old character (the filming started in early 2021, she turns 10 on June 4th, 2022). Also you are correct, it is the Little Leia show. She billed before Ewan McGregor in the cast list on IMDB website.
@jbug19792 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say she "runs". she kinda "waddles".

How about looking to the billing on the actual show itself?

Your commentaries are golden, they're such a delight and bring out so much brilliant humor and obvious faux pas. Aside from poorly written scripts is Deborah Chow as a director who has failed miserably on Kenobi as well. Her direction was not ominous or dark, it's an embarrassment, void of canon and details, almost hysterically with idiotic contrivances. 😅 ❤

It warms my heart that you are one of the honest people who adores the prequels and understands what they were. Faults are faults, yes, but I'd ask anyone trying to simply lambast the prequels based on its relatively small puddle of serious criticisms to bring me their top ten "flawless" films and give me a few minutes.

Space Moses even somehow knows Anakin is Dark Vader (even though it’s been established in canon that only few knew his true identity was e.g., The Emperor) and she had the privilege to tell Obi-Wan Kenobi that Anakin Skywalker is alive (instead of finding it out himself years prior, due to him already knowing Darth Vader was Anakin cuz of the hologram he saw in RotS)
@TheLittlePlatoon2 жыл бұрын
I know! I can see why they’d want to have the big reveal. It’s very effective, dramatically. But it does pose questions about what Vader’s been doing for the last decade. I suppose you *could* try and explain it away by saying Kenobi has been so isolated that he simply doesn’t know Vader is still alive, but that’s still a bit of a stretch.

Well put. Subbed! People raised mainly on IP fictions will only write copies of IP fiction which get poorer with each iteration. I don't want to write anyone off, but more real world living is necessary for the people involved in these creations. Also, I'm sure Disney suffers from a 'too many cooks' issue.

Welcome aboard! And yes, absolutely. Everything they do reeks of committee.

It kinda says something about Disney when respawn entertainment created a better story in a shorter amount of time. Trilla>reva I will give the show the benefit of the doubt until the show ends though as I don't believe it's fair to judge a show until it's complete. But I know that its gonna probably be bad because it's Disney that wrote it. I've never really been a big fan Deborah chow and honestly I have no idea how she got her job given that she went from nothing to directing multiple stories in star wars.

I could be wrong, but I do not recall seeing Leia anywhere in the trailer for the show, but they did show Luke. Yet Luke is in a whopping 2 episodes, while Leia is in 6.

Remember how they are obsessed with "subverting your expectations ". Blah, blah, storytelling, it's now about bait and switch style writing and seeing if they can outthink the audience. Sadly they usually can't and we get this series and others of its ilk.
