If someone had told me a Kenobi series was being made in say, 2010, I'd have been genuinely so happy about that. Even with all Disney has done to Star Wars, since 2012, admittedly I held out hope that Kenobi would be treated differently and I hoped against hope that there would be a unique situation playing out with Kenobi, that it'd be a diamond in the rough. Because he is my favourite Jedi, I allowed myself to believe that, even after seeing what they did to Luke and Boba. I just wanted to believe they wouldn't stoop so low as to ruin him. But the literal worst case has played out instead, as they've defaulted to form and couldn't help themselves from destroying yet another vital character in the Star Wars Saga. Poor Obi-Wan. A Jedi Master, whom while certainly put to the test in his isolation on Tatooine, in his misery and solitude, reduced to a completely false caricature of his true self. An exaggerated, bad fan-fic ruination of his character. Obi-Wan Kenobi is the quintessential Jedi, even more so (arguably) than Luke or Yoda. While not as powerful as _either_ of them, that is not the point. Kenobi embodied the very best of what the Jedi were supposed to be. The ace starfighter pilot whom didn't even like flying. One of the most talented lightsaber wielders whom had ever lived, with a long list of victories and feats on the battlefield, yet one whom became so renowned for his non-combative methods that he became known as 'The Negotiator'. The true paragon of what it meant to be a true Jedi. Beyond reproach. Too pure for Dooku or Sidious to turn to the dark side. The great Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn knew he would become. The bastion of hope where apparently none could be found. The apparition to Luke on Hoth. The guardian of a new hope. Thankless, hermitized, abandoned by almost all. Hunted and alone. But he never gave up. He stoically fought on. While never the strongest, never the most powerful in the force, never the deadliest with a blade, and never the most famed of the heroes of the Republic, he was always up there _among_ the best. The greatest strategist, perhaps, rivalled only by Yoda and Windu themselves, in that regard. And look what they did to him 😑 Obi-Wan Kenobi is the quintessential Jedi Master. And they ruined him just as much as Luke in TLJ. There will be some defending this in denial, but they must see the truth. It's a mess.
@frocat51632 жыл бұрын
Matthew Stover perfectly encapsulated Obi-Wan in the _Revenge of the Sith_ novelization: "This is Obi-Wan Kenobi: A phenomenal pilot who doesn't like to fly. A devastating warrior who'd rather not fight. A negotiator without peer who frankly prefers to sit alone in a quite gave and meditate." [Discussing lightsaber forms with Mace Windu] "I am called a great swordsman because I invented a lethal style; but who is greater, the creator of a killing form -- or the master of the classic form?" "I'm very flattered that you would consider me a master but really --" "Not a master. The master." [While facing General Greivous on Utapau] "Contemplation of death brought only one slight sting of regret, and more than a bit of puzzlement. Until this very moment, he had never realized he'd always expected, for no discernible reason -- That when he died, Anakin would be with him." [During the duel on Mustafar] "They spun and whirled throughout its levels, up its stairs, and across its platforms; they battled out onto the collection panels over which the cascades of lava poured, and Obi-Wan, out on the edge of the collection panel, hunching under a curve of durasteel that splashed aside gouts of lava, deflecting Force blasts and countering strikes from this creature of rage that had been his best friend, suddenly comprehended an unexpectedly profound truth. The man he faced was everything Obi-Wan had devoted his life to destroying: Murderer. Traitor. Fallen Jedi. Lord of the Sith. And here, and now, despite it all ... Obi-Wan still loved him. Yoda had said it, flat-out: _Allow such attachments to pass out of one's life, a Jedi must,_ but Obi-Wan had never let himself understand. He had argued for Anakin, made excuses, covered for him again and again and again; all the while this attachment he denied even feeling had blinded him to the dark path his best friend walked. Obi-Wan knew there was, in the end, only one answer for attachment... He let it go."

@@ThePalaeontologist Yeah, I know a lot of people hate the prequels, and though I've never _hated_ them, I also think they didn't do justice to the story Lucas wanted to tell. But the one thing I absolutely appreciate about the prequels is Ewan McGregor's portrayal of Obi-Wan. He made Obi-Wan my favorite Star Wars character. And the EU stories about Obi-Wan and Anakin just added to Ewan's portrayal. I doubt he ever read any of those books, but those stories synced perfectly with his portrayal. He was the greatest Jedi.
@jerm81462 жыл бұрын
Everything you said up until the end was, and still is, Obi-Wan. Just because a giant company bought the rights to the property, made up their own stories to add to it, and called it "canon" doesn't make it is so. When Michael Jackson bought the rights to the Beatles' music, he could have written a new album that sounded like modern techno-pop and called it an "Official" Beatles album. I wouldn't have said "The Beatles are ruined because they sound so different now" I'd have just said "Yeah, that's not really the Beatles anyway, so they're not 'ruined' for me in the least." This really isn't Star Wars. None of it is. It's the creation of a giant company who bought the rights to the property and decided to "write a new album." That's it. If George Lucas wasn't involved in any meaningful way (or at all) then it's just fan fiction from a very rich fan. Star Wars fans could save themselves a lot of anguish if they took this perspective. As far as I'm concerned, Star Wars is not ruined by these Disney stories any more than it was ruined by the Robot Chicken parodies. We still have the original 6 films that WERE Lucas's vision and we can watch them over and over. Plus we have The Clone Wars series which he was also involved in. Do I want more ACTUAL Star Wars content? Of course. I'd like another Beatles album too. But it isn't going to happen.

When you have a successful burger, and you want to sell more of that burger, you just add more value to the burger itself by promoting a better, bigger burger with the same recipe. You don't change the burger, you don't take from the burger, you just use more burger. The recipe was there, and they had the entire EU to flesh our a story most fans would fall behind, but then comes Ms. Kennedy and says "there is no source material". I think they could fix the series in the last 5 minutes simply by taking the last shot fade to a close up of Obi Wans face while he is sleeping then widen the shot to show him tossing and turning in his sleep and suddenly he sits straight up in bed and says " thank the force it was all just a nightmare". Sort of a wizard of OZ ending. While this would fix a great deal it could never fix the bad writing or directing.

I literally heard some people talking about it on the train. Specifically about Reva somehow passing Leia in the tunnel and someone actually defended it by guessing things that could have happened that weren't shown. If mini Leia resisted, that shows shes a potential force wielder and she'd be forced into being an inquisitor, or killed. And nothing can improve Rey, the character should be scrubbed from all records. Vader isn't menacing, he's genocidal yet also super lazy.

God that was so stupid. Someone must've told the writers that they have to show how "Han Solo made a name for himself", and they were too stupid to understand what that idiom means. And they ripped the scene off from The Holiday Special. Art Carney, playing a merchant, sneakily tells Chewy's wife that Chewy and Han are on their way home while an Imperial officer is in the room by saying something like, "That shaggy carpet you ordered is on its way. A little old lady made it by HAND: SOLO."

I always encourage looking at this bigger picture. That thought works against Disney with this storyline... If Leah has this level of association with the rebels, let alone Kenobi, what makes anyone think the Empire - let alone Vader - will let her or her family out of their sight ever again? She would never be able to help others.

I was exited about this show, as Obi-Wan Kenobi is beloved character. Noble hero. Wise Jedi knight. The protector of Luke. The true nemesis of Vader. This character is one of the core stones of the Star Wars universe. As important as Luke, Leia, Yoda, Han Solo, Vader and Palpatine. So I started to watch the show with excitement. But it is bad, really bad. Bad script, bad dialogue, bad action, bad pacing, bad costumes, mediocre CGI, terrible acting. Still, all that makes it just bad, not a scam. After the first episode I realized this show is not about Obi-Wan Kenobi. So I assumed they used the name as bait. I decided it is a children show about young Lea. Fine I thought. I will watch it with my family. The children of my cousin and my mother will like it. Although it is bad, it is kind of fine for show for children. But after third episode I realized it is not even that. It is a show about some freshly invented character called Riva. And that turned the bait into a scam. Anyway it would be still watchable, if that new character was well written. But she is not. Riva's character arc is obvious. Riva's actions are literally stupid. Riva's dialogue is dump. Riva is poorly directed, in a poorly directed show. The fighting choreography is simply terrible. I would blame the actress, but this show made even Ewan McGregor to look like terrible actor. Now it is obvious what will happen - Riva was the tall girl from the intro. Obviously she is corrupted by Vader. But now thanks to Lea will have catharsis and will become a good Jedi again. I even dare to guess she will defeat Vader, because why not? Obviously from Lucasfilm have not any respect to their own IP called Star Wars. Then I read about the racial insults against Moses Ingram. Well I doubt the issue is her race. She became a face of a scam. It is not her fault. She is just an actress. Still as she is the face of that terrible scam called Obi -Wan Kenobi, it is pretty normal people to be angry to her, and to insult her at every possible way. She is the easy, soft target. As the real scammers are executives of Lucasfilm, so that white trash Kathleen Kennedy and the producer of the show Deborah Chow. Sorry, but at the end I become angry.

I keep thinking about your point about the difference between figuring out what a character would do in a scenario vs. deciding what they want to 'make' the character do, such a good insight. Thanks for your videos man.

Hahaha--Jake Kenobi accomplishes the most basic of skills that we'd already seen in a film from 1977, and that's a selling point for a series that otherwise shows him to be a helpless coward who neither cares or is capable of his mission to protect Luke Skywalker. Instead, Jake Kenobi leaves Luke exposed to protect Princess Jake Organa. Like all D!sney Kathleen Kennedy Star Wars, it is unrecognizable as Star Wars, but consistently recognizable as hateful incompetence.

I think it's curious how Obi-Wan will go down to like 50% on Rotten Tomatoes and then MAGICALLY be back at 60%, it's happened several times that I've witnessed. And if you look at the actual reviews, its like THOUSANDS of 0.5 to 3 star reviews and maybe a couple of dozen 5 star reviews. Same with Metacritic, it's sitting at 7.1, but if you look at the ratings, the first like 4 pages are all 0-5 ratings. I feel like it is either getting positively review bombed, or they're just not counting thousands of reviews because they're "negative review bombing this amazing show!" I personally don't know anyone who loves it, I have one friend who is still on board with it, but even he sees several of the flaws.

If Kenobi is so good and they care about the canon, why'd they make Obi-Wan call himself Ben AND Obi-Wan when he clearly states in ANH, "I’ve not gone by the name 'Obi-Wan' since before you were born." to Luke.
@CaptainCoolzCT-2 жыл бұрын
@M Oak What do you mean by "You lot"? Is there an entire organised group of people who actively dislike every inconsistency? Very aggressive wording. What I am stating is that the Kenobi show is rather clearly breaking canon, especially in comparison to what you speak of. If anything, the "Darth Vader betrayed and murdered your father" thing was actually further built on in the franchise. 'Ben' calling himself 'Obi-Wan' in the Kenobi show whilst also stating in A New Hope that he hasn’t gone by that name since before Luke was born has no canon excuse. Regarding, "But I don’t see you bringing that up"… of course I didn’t bring the 'Vader betrayed your father' quote up, as that was not actually the point that I was talking about. Although it is an inconsistency, Lucas actually expanded on it in a way in which it felt less like a retcon and moreso that Obi-Wan wanted to protect Luke from the truth before he started his training. Clearly it WAS a retcon, because Star Wars wasn’t meant to have a Sequel from when the original script was being written. But Disney has no such excuse for breaking established canon in a similar fashion, and Disney has even done it in a worse way, giving no explanation for it.

Nothing I have seen in Star Wars shows that Jedi Masters can loose their force powers. Look at Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back for example. I think it's like 20 years he's been exiled on Dagobah and he can pull a submerged Tie Fighter right up and out of the swamp and float it pretty much effortlessly onto the shore and land it perfectly. How much "practice" do you think he's doing on an uninhabited swamp planet...? Then there is Maul, he also seems to have no trouble using the force after years of insanity...
@mbob43372 жыл бұрын
By having Leia's force powers work now. Vader should have figured out she was his daughter. The first time they interrogated her. They should have only kicked in, in Empire. While training as a politician, would make her resistant to basic stuff. Because why would the needle droid work? That should also fail, if you are good in the force. Only a more powerful force user should break it. Doesn't fix the plot hole of why Vader can't scan her mind. But that shouldn't be a power in the first place. Because it breaks EVERYTHING. Including a hiding Obi-Wan, where Reeva should just scan everyone. Unless the writers agree uncle Owen beat Reeva at force mind reading. Also, Leia untrained. Doesn't know how to use any force abilities. Can use them to stop Reeva. Obi Wan, who has been trained for decades. Desperately wanting to use his powers, can't. So being untrained, is more powerful than someone who has a mental block, for some reason. Even though he's seen countless deaths, being on a battlefield most of the time.

They are also missing the point of Leia resisting mind probes. The fact she can as an untrained 10 year old, and is not Toydarian, should have alarmed everyone and hasten Alderaan getting glassed by nine years. Anyone who doesn’t get why “identity politics” is bad for storytelling, in ways you don’t consciously notice, here’s an example. Reva’s costuming & presentation. She’s playing an “evil” villain, but they’re so worried about their “unconscious bias” even though it’s what the story needs, they can’t make her appear “evil” or “menacing”. Look at Anakin in ROTS, by the time he becomes “evil” and goes over to the dark side, his face is scarred, he’s got a mechanical hand, and when he’s using the the dark side, his eye turn that weird yellow. This is called “visual storytelling”. Star Wars is really consistent about their villains look like villains. Reva dresses in black & has a cape, that’s it. Her appearance is no more villainous than Luke’s in ROTJ, heck, Luke has a mechanical hand, so at least, he’s been through some stuff. The weird thing is, they have no problem putting the Asian inquisitor in white face and putting a hat on his head, that may or may not resemble a Wok. At least he looks evil and has an “evil” manipulated voice. I guess we know where Asians stand on their intersectional hierarchy pyramid. Disney’s so anti-racist, racist.
