The empire was crumbling long before his service to his nation. He had no choice but to implement changes to the economy to keep things from collapsing and once certain changes are made, it's near impossible to stop because there is soon a need for more change or it will take more than what your crumbling economy has to mute the fervor. China has taken notes, but it is very far into capitalism. Behold, you will notice China will have a huge problem on it's hands with zero Covid policy and the collapse of the property bubbles. Many Chinese will be left without their life savings and the family's money. You will also see major banks and companies fold. The CCP can only do so much. They will just put a lid on the suffering. They will have bigger problems than Taiwan within 2 years time, but most likely sooner. You heard it here first. RIP Mr. Gorbachev. Perhaps the last honest leader of Russia.

People say the cold war ended when the Soviet Union "collapsed" but to say it that way is to ignore a crucial element, Gorbachev's basic decency. The cold war ended because Russia finally had a decent man at the helm. Imagine a Stalin-esque leader in place of Gorbachev and facing the same economic woes of the late 1980s/early 1990s. Do you think a Stalin-esque leader would've done what Gorbachev did? That is, do you think a Stalin-esque leader would relinquish his own power as part of a larger effort to promote the welfare of the people? Of course not. History tells us that even a few famines won't convince the typical Russian dictator he's unfit to rule. My larger point here is that the Soviet Union "collapsed" because Gorbachev cared enough about the people to let Soviet communism, a failed experiment, come to an end.

The hollowing-out of the Soviet economy at the hands of Gorbachev's three predecessors made his economic reforms impossible. Rampant bureaucratic corruption that Brezhnev obligingly turned a blind eye to (and likely was enriched by) combined with years of military overspending set the stage for the collapse of the USSR. Supply was gone at that point. And when Chernobyl happened, that really was the death-blow to the Communist system. It was only a mere question of time after that before the whole edifice came crashing down. Gorbachev might have been the right man to have saved the situation but he was at the wrong time for it to be remotely feasible. He came into the picture way too late for anything to save the Soviet state. Gorbachev gets all due credit for helping to end the Cold War and for being smart enough to see the writing was on the wall for the end of the USSR and not trying to hang on to that dying empire by force. It could have gone far worse.

Gorbachev's support for the Crimean Annexation and the Georgian conflict show a regression in his perspective as to the importance of liberty and self-governance in his own country and it's old satellites. In a way, this change in Gorby in the last two decades of life actually bolstered Putin's actions in Georgia and Crimea leading towards where we are today in Ukraine.

He chose humanity over despotism and chose peace over war. He saw people as equal to himself and realised that people have as many rights as he does. He felt the pain and suffering of ordinary people and chose to change the demonic system by giving people rights to live as free men... It was his moral courage and his wisdom that made him take on the establishment knowing full well that he might end up paying the price with his life, and the total destruction of his family. Gorbachev was an original and was decades before his time. If he was not willingly making the policies of glasnost and perestroika, who was? I feel he, as a sane person who wanted to live the rest of his natural life out, was forced to sound "supportive" of any state-policies. This would be very understandable regarding his statements in the Putin-era's wars in Georgia and the first Ukraine war against Russia. He did not want to die by being pushed out of a window or poisoned like two oligarchs who have recently spoken out against Putin's acts of terror and like past outspoken critics of Putin's propaganda and lies. He could not count on Trump to offer him assylum and likely did not want to leave his home country at an advanced age. I understand, Mikhail, even if no one in the West does or if hate is spat in your way from Putin or if those without full reading into history and thus the full perspective utter as much as an ill word toward you in life or now in death. He was right we made a mistake pulling out of the agreement he and Regan (omnipotent being (if one exists) bless their souls) because now we cannot find a sane or even a nogotiating US President or Russian leader to work together and as the two largest nuclear armed countries, we both put the entire Earth and all of its living matter at jeopardy should either side continue to empower unqualified or narcissistic leaders or "woke" and non-negotiatiable attitude GenZ or Millenials of the future. To any readers: I will never see any negative comments or positive ones left as a "reply", and I choose this because I have set KZbin to never give any push, email, or other notifications to me. I do not need these notifications or search to see past comments' replies because I have a fulfilling, happy, positive, and challenging life!

To give some rarely mentioned perspective for people who weren't alive at the time. At the time that Mikhail Gorbachev came to supreme power within the USSR, the combined global superpowers were sitting on enough weapons to kill every man, woman and child on the planet 1,000 times over again. Mikhail Gorbachev clearly recognized that that was total senselessness and the reason that Secretary Gorbachev is upheld higher than any politician of the 20th Century is because he not only recognized the fact that humanity was sitting on the brink of global total self-annihilation (most likely because of a simple internal mis-communication, as opposed to a nuclear war) but primarily because he was the only politician who had the balls to make an ultimately totally self-sacrificial effort to actually do something about it and start the process of nuclear disarmament, which ultimately failed because powerful people on every side of the issue of disarmament absolutely refused to support him out of pure greed, far more than out of pure arrogance! Having been alive at the time, I know all too well that, arrogant politicians could have agreed to give up some of their huge stockpiles of weapons, but they absolutely could not bring themselves to give up both their huge stockpiles of weapons and the titanic surpluses of cash that were freely flowing into their pockets as a result of financing a multi-trillion dollar global arms race that was then headed into space in the form of a proposed totally insanely expensive "Star Wars Missile Deployment System!" which Soviet Hardliners of the time were claiming was a ploy by the West to bankrupt the Soviet Union. This actually historically marked the 2nd time that The Soviet Union had had The Huge Balls to save the world from a global catastrophic disaster, first in the form of taking on the brunt of the battle against the hyper-militant Nazis and taking 27,000,000 to 42,000,000 death casualties in the process, compared to America's 1,000,000 casualties, in a world war that is estimated to have cost the lives of 80,000,000 people globally and 2nd in the form of suffering the miraculously relatively bloodless breakup of The Soviet Union! Mikhail Gorbachev was a certifiable anti-totally senseless war hero and given that heroism is a highly self-sacrificial undertaking Secretary Gorbachev ultimately lost everything that he had worked towards in life and was grossly underappreciated in his home region.

It did not cease by itself. Gorbachov declared the end of the Soviet Union on December 24, 1991. But Boris Yeltsin pushed him hard to do so. (there are videos on youtube, but in Russian language_ @ 9:38 Sure, Gorbachov supported the war in Ukraine and Georgia because of his Russian imperialistic mentality.
