I once had this exact one. Given to me by my father also! Allegedly used by a member of the Ventures at some point... Gigged it for many years, then ended up selling it around a decade ago after I had stomped it into NEEDS-repair mode and realized someone was willing to pay $400 for it AS IS, with its decades worth of coastal kept rust and corrosion and all. Regrettable decision indeed, but hey, so it goes! Have since acquired countless other fuzzes, and out of them all, SF300 in "secret" mode is the closest I've found - just going by my own memory and feel. Would love to re-house it in a 3D printed Univox shell. UNIMOX?? LONG LIVE FUZZ!!!!

That's awesome! I'm sure it's a bummer to have sold the original but I'm glad the SF300 is filling the void! And yes a rehouse would be awesome. Plastic is not too great for gigging haha

This was a fun video! And truer words were never spoken than "the Superfuzz is objectively the best pedal." The TWA Wahxidizer is a recent and fun addition to the list of clones, I can recommend that one.
@sirchrisjaxon
@sirchrisjaxon Жыл бұрын
Haha amen! And thank you! Good to know, the Wahxidizer looks cool. Was also looking into the Solidgold 76 plus, which is a similar vibe
@latontolog
@latontolog Жыл бұрын
@@sirchrisjaxon Yeah, very similar concepts, although the Wahxidizer's optional filter is envelope controlled rather than LFO-controlled like the 76 Plus's one seems to be. Also, I tend to prefer Superfuzz clones that allow you to easily get to the two classic tone settings, the 76 Plus seems to have so many EQ controls that I'd be worried I'd have a hard time finding those classic default settings.

That’s great! Amazing for the money. An original would be awesome, but you can at least try to get a clone that’s closer to the Super Fuzz rather than the Hyper Fuzz in the meantime. The JHS Supreme is great and doesn’t cost a million dollars

I have had a great experience with BYOC (build your own clone) kits so I ordered one Univox Superfuzz clone (Leeds Fuzz) I have not assembled yet. They have the original NOS 2SC828 transistors and in the youtube demos sound really good.

I never got fuzz until I heard an FZ-2, and it made me completely go nuts. Something I personally enjoy on guitar is hitting it with an ungodly amount of bass - it reduces a lot of the clanginess and turns it into this sort of synthy sound.
@sirchrisjaxon
@sirchrisjaxon 11 ай бұрын
Agreed! Boosting the bass does a really cool saturation that takes away all definition and leaves you with this awesome thick synth sound. FZ-2 does this really well, as does the fuzz factory

@@sirchrisjaxon I would like to add that I didn't even really know what a flanger pedal did. I don't have one. I'm new to pedals. Have four so far and a fifth on the way. I can definitely see some use for this in some metal! So yeah this was the perfect video for me to understand. :) Stay cool brother.

I have been a huge fan of the Guyatone for years-- when those first came on the market I could get them for $25 and they KILLED every other superfuzz clone out there at the time. Most of the other pedals from that series were very good too. FWIW there is another recent Superfuzz clone, made by Ananashead in Spain, which is excellent (and much more durable than the Guyatone). Excellent reviews and demos!

I never heard of that Balls Supercharger, and I need to try that out. I normally like this sound with guitar, not bass, but I've only had Hyper Fuzz and Behringer. The clean blend makes it interesting for guitar too, I like to use dissonant intervals that don't really work with super fuzz normally. Great video!
@sirchrisjaxon
@sirchrisjaxon Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks! Yeah I would say for bass the Supercharger is pretty sweet. A hyper fuzz sometimes sounds cool on bass, but doesn't really work well in a mix by comparison. A clean blend definitely helps keep some sort of "normal" sound when using certain intervals so it's worth trying out a super fuzz that has one!

Hey! Yeah unfortunately I have yet to own a real FZ2. I think based on all the clones I've tried that I prefer a more standard Super Fuzz circuit to a Hyper Fuzz. But I would still like to try the real thing to give it a totally fair shot.

As a bass player, my favorite was probably either the original, the JPTR, or the Wilson. Personally I've only owned two superfuzz-ish circuits, one being the Baltimore Sonic Research Institute "FZZ" and the other being the Fjord Fuzz "Fenris". The Fenris can get some really nice tones for bass, but it can be a little bit hard to tame. The FZZ I didn't bond with at all... it was hard to get a good mix with it.
@sirchrisjaxon
@sirchrisjaxon 11 ай бұрын
I agree with those choices, with the addition of maybe the Balls Supercharger. Yeah I wasn't crazy about the fenris when I heard it but I like other stuff Fjord makes. Haven't heard of the FZZ but I'll have to read into it out of curiosity. But the Knuckle Dragger is probably the easiest to buy out of the 3 you mentioned. Might be worth looking into

@@sirchrisjaxon I lied-- I also have JohnK's clone of the Prescription Electronics Depth Charge. The Depth Charge is pretty good for bass. I know the Depth Charge is based on a Super fuzz, but I don't know how they differ. The Balls has a cool sound, although it feels to me like it could be "bedroom" tone. The more I listen to the Wilson, it sounds like it would work well in a mix.

Hey Chris! :D what about the JHS Supreme? I compared it with the BOSS hyper fuzz and they are very very different. The JHS version is gated and everything sounds clearer... The BOSS sounds like thousands of farts being farted at the same time. Have you ever tryied the JHS Supreme?
@sirchrisjaxon
@sirchrisjaxon 11 ай бұрын
Hey! I have not personally tried the supreme, but I believe what you're saying. I don't specifically say it in the video, but I have pretty much decided that I don't like the hyper fuzz as much as the super fuzz. It just sounds cheaper, and the non-gated aspect is just way less cool to me (although i really like it when electric wizard uses it). The supreme is way more similar to the original super fuzz, so I think that's a great one to get.

Great video! Just wondering, how come a FZ-2 (or a SF-300) didn't make it into the comparison? Do you consider them too far from a standard superfuzz sound? I'm a Boss FZ-2 owner wondering if getting the Danelectro would make sense...
@sirchrisjaxon
@sirchrisjaxon Жыл бұрын
Hey there! Check out 17:33 for the SF300 demo. But still, to answer your question, I think that the "hyper fuzz" types definitely give you the Super Fuzz sound. My main issue with them (at least from my experience with the SF300 and other clones) is that they aren't gated. I consider that to be a pretty important aspect of the tone. I would love to own a real FZ-2 at some point, but they don't come cheap these days haha. I think you would like the Danelectro. Gives you about the same tonal range of a hyper fuzz while being a little closer to the original.

@@sirchrisjaxon Totally right, I missed the SF300 in the video, sorry! BTW, I ended up getting a Danelectro Eisenhower as well. Although they definitely share a lot of their DNA, they have their differences. It's hard to put it to words but I like I have both.
