FYI: It seems the "odd repeating dips (in FPS)" I describe at 25:00 are not generated by the game or by the console. They are a product of my gameplay video capture process. Update: I've now identified the cause of the error and fixed it. I plan do a shorter Oblivion video soon with corrected results. Is there anything else in Oblivion you'd like me to look at whilst I'm there? Cheers.

Beat it on both 360 and PS3 myself. If I had the patience (and free time) to do a modded playthrough on PC I would do it but I got burned out a few years ago setting up a lot of mods for it and it running like crap. I really hope we get a remaster.

So much nostalgia in one video. Not just the game either. Theres something about stumbling on a video i didnt search for, about a guy who isnt following a trend or click baiting for views, whos just making a video he wanted to make because its something he cares about. No over the top flashy intros, no list of social media links telling us to follow all of them or giveaways and no ad reads. Just a well spoken man showing us interesting technical facts about a game we all love. My man, you made a better video than you think.

Boy, that i so nice to hear. Seriously, thanks for saying that. I made a conscious decision about 6 months ago only to make videos that I'd want to watch on topics that I'm really interested in... and not be bothered about YT trends. This video is probably my best example of that goal. I'm glad it found an audience. Thanks again!

We didn't realise how lucky we were back then, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim all in the space of 5 years. If you told me back then we'd be waiting 15-20 years for the next Elder Scrolls game I would have laughed in your face lol. I miss old Bethesda, come to think of it I miss gaming the way it was back then, Starfield was a massive disappointment for me and I just don't trust Bethesda to deliver anymore for ES6, such a shame. Great video by the way, subbed 👍

Awesome. Thanks for the sub! I agree. I've spent so much time with Bethesda games over the years. Starfield was *too* different for me, though i will go back to it some time. @@ramnexus Yeah that's true, I lost interest with Starfield, it was mainly the sense of exploration that was missing most for me. Considering most of the people who made those games have left the company, its no surprise they make games differently. BGS is in the same place as Obsidian when it comes to fans asking for NewVegas2. Most of the OG's that made that game are gone. Just like most of the OG's that made TESIII, TESIV and TESV are gone.

Crazy thing was this was the same year Skyrim released so i went from knowing nothing about the games to playing fallout 3, oblivion, and Skyrim in the same year. Do you have a preferred platform to play it on? I'd be keen to hear. NB: Bethesda has not confirmed the remaster for Oblivion. That doc i showed was from 2020, before Bethesda was bought by Microsoft. It is quite possible MS cancelled it. Bethesda said they'd have a next-gen console patch for Fallout 4 by the end of 2023 but that's been delayed until this year. My guess is, if there's an Oblivion Remaster, it will be announced after the Fallout 4 next-gen patch drops. Cheers!

The Imperial Septum has been sitting on my desk since the day I got it. It looks old and worn now, like a coin should as I stare at it in my hand now. :) I enjoyed Oblivion, but it was a let down from Morrowind which is peak beth in my book. I love content like this - subbed. With regards to loading times, I would have liked to to see an external SSD or HD comparison thrown into the mix; as I remember the Ascent and Prey 2017 having *really* long load times on the Xbox One, but with the external SSD it was nowhere near as bad (as noted in Digital Foundry) as using the internal HD.

Good point. I did think about that. I do use an external SSD for some Xbox games (not Oblivion!). I also have a platter HDD in my PC for backups, so i could have gone to town! It was just down to time and getting the video done!

Very interesting video, but at the end you also could have put a video of oblivion with enb and distant LOD, so that we could have seen the absoluty peak that is possible with oblivion :)
@ramnexus
@ramnexus 5 ай бұрын
I did think about it 😁 I collected some footage of my modded Oblivion setup (though this one does not have ENB) which would have visually blown all other footage out of the water... but that wasn't the point of the video so I left it. Cheers!

Hearing that first musical score took me back. My first play through of this game was nothing short of a magical experience for me. I also recall the XBOX360 version had HDR lighting.

I know the PC version has HDR as an option. But if it is on the Xbox version then it’s always on as there’s no toggle option. it’s not the HDR as we know it today on modern TVs and monitors though. Same name but different effect: it was a way of mimicking what our eyes do when we move from dark to light areas, slowly adjusting. Cheers!

Appreciate the video. I have a Series S and I keep more old games on it than new. This is one of those games that is still fun after all of these years with a system that can finally keep up (with a 17 year old game..).

Same. My Series S has mainly older back-compat games on it. I was quite impressed with the performance of the Series S, and a bit disappointed with the Series X tbh.

Ah yes. The actor who played Jango in Attack of the Clones (and Boba in the Boba Fett TV show) is an New Zealander and I'm an Aussie. Sounds similar, though I imagine he sounds a lot more menacing than me! :)

It really does feel better. Now I can play it on the series x with quick resume and next to no load times. Thanks for making a positive video about a game I’m re living. By the way could someone enlighten me on the leveling trick where you pick the wrong main skills to control leveling? I don’t understand how to for sure get +5 in my play style.

@ramnexus I think there are so many great old titles for you to explore - from Bethesda, morrowind and new Vegas Legacy of kain series Gothic 1,2 Neverwinter series Deus ex Baldurs Gate Turok Quake and Doom Generally there are a lot of old school titles. What are you interested in yourself? Consoles only or PC as well?

I think one thing I can bring to YT is the analysis tools… and I spend a lot of time doing background research on the game. So you got me thinking of NWN 1 & 2 and how they were received and improved over time. I played them a bunch. Both consoles and PC. If the game is on both then a comparison may make for a more interesting story. Thanks for the suggestions. Cheers!

Editing is superb, the candour is great as well. You seem cool as a cucumber. I've got 4,000 hours + in this game and have never stopped loving it since day one. I have exhausted myself of its content, but sometimes I just walk around and shoot deer in the game and sell it at the market. Anyway, thanks for this great video.

You're welcome. I've been using a mod for Oblivion on PC (NorthernUI) which provides Xbox controller support. Can also (optionally) make the game's interface look more like Skyrim's. Controller support is not perfect but its there. Ironically, if playing on Steam you need to turn Steam controller support off for it to work :)

Fallout 3 looks amazing on the Steam Deck, those old Bethesda games have a ton of detail when you have the hardware to push them. Fallout 3 was the first game I wanted to play in 4K when I got my first 4K monitor years ago.

Very quality video for such a small channel. Pretty much Digital Foundry quality. I just put my old 360 disc into my Series X and enjoyed the game. I have it on PC as well both physically and on Steam but there is something about playing on console that feels more relaxing. Also it looks great on my OLED TV. I’m glad we have this enhanced version on Series consoles.

30:03 i think on your pc you forgot to turn on HDR lighting. which does not work together with anti aliasing, so its either or, and you probably made sure to turn on AA (although its not needed for 4k) so HDR was switched off. If HDR was switched on, the PC footage would have looked just as nicely lit and colourful as the console footage to its left.
@ramnexus
@ramnexus 5 ай бұрын
Yes, you're right. I have footage of me setting it up on PC. HDR was off as I had it in 8xAA ... and of course playing it at native 4K on a 4K monitor kinda negates the need for that. I know you can enable AA via the nvidia console instead and keep HDR on but i left the console alone as I wanted it as 'vanilla' as possible. Thanks. Lesson learned.
