Though silly, clunky, and bugged at times, Oblivion had a way of feeling more like a living and breathing world than either Skyrim or Morrowind. Skyrim looks the best and has the most fun combat mechanics. Morrowind has some of the best lore and most interesting storytelling. But Oblivion had the best atmosphere. Cozy inns, grandiose city streets, rundown waterfront shacks, comfy little shops, chapel towers with mountains rising above city walls in the background. City folk going about their day, chatting with each other, going to work, going out to eat, taking strolls throughout town, going on monthly trips to other cities. It felt as if the world existed apart from you, that you were just a passing encounter in these character's lives. The characters were quirky and unique - they had personality. The naively friendly Argonian girl, the surly and quippy Redguard battle master, the friendly and earnest Bosmer thief, the principled Dunmer warrior who took an interest to (bad) painting, the Countess with an antique collection hobby. Characters didn't exist to dole out quests or exposition and caverns didn't exist to be explored in a grand quest. They simply were. It feels like home.

Beautiful comment! I fully agree. Oblivion is much more magical, vivid and colorful, it's mesmerizing. It truly feels like a paradise. Even the dungeons, caves, forts and Planes of Oblivion felt more mysterious and magical than Skyrim. Of course Skyrim has its charms that Oblivion doesn't have, but Skyrim is more ''epic and grand'' and it felt empty at times. Oblivion is more simple, yet sweeter, and the game feels very rich with life.

This my first real AAA video game as a tween on an old pc that could barely play it and took minutes to get through every door. But I must have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours wondering the forests of Cyrodiil, completing every quest, talking to every NPC, trying every character class. And yet, even now when I go back, I still find something new. Every time.

I don't know what it is but I really enjoyed Oblivion's music far more than Skyrim. It definitely feels more lively, if not colorful; just a lot more feeling attached. On the other hand I felt that Skyrim's music was more bleak and dreary, although the game itself is themed relatively bleak in a frozen wasteland of sorts.

@bobsacamano6402 6 жыл бұрын
Connor Conatser totally agree, the music of Skyrim fit the game perfectly but Oblivion had way better music in general. It had different themes I guess you can call it. They had the nice music when you go places and then the dark music of you went to the plane of oblivion and other bad places like caves or dungeons

We will probably experience many themes of harmony in the next game, regarding music and setting. We will love a change from Skyrim's music in general. I still think Skyrim has its relaxed musics and good combat music. However there will be a lot more variations in the next game as we see in the progression from Oblivion to Skyrim.

Eli7222 agreed! Let's hope! Did you hear they have leaked legal documents from the same lawyer that handled oblivion and Skyrim? The title is going to be Redfall, supposedly. Let's hope we aren't trading a snowy wasteland for a sandy wasteland. I really loved cyrodiil because it had everything.

It took me about 6 months to finally get my first xbox arcade and play it. I then traded that in and got a ps4 and kept playing this game. I am now playing this on PC and it runs better than ever, after all this time I love coming back to this game especially during winter months. Makes me think of Christmas and with a cup of jasmine green tea as I always did. I do love skyrim in VR but this game is just so atmospheric and the music is just bliss! its like I am back to being a kid again every time I play it. I’ll always credit this game with some very personal healing. I graduated in 08 and had a wild two years of emotional strain and living away from home for the first time. I moved back home and spent a whole winter through spring playing this game and coming back to myself. It’s been 14 years now and I haven’t played it since that time and I want to get a 360 solely to play this again and come back to myself again.

Is it just me, or does Cyrodiil with its trees and soft lighting really look like some Rococo landscape art? I even suppose the developers made that on purpose. There is some accent on pictures and painting in Oblivion. Oil paintings are everywhere in the houses, brushes and paint palettes may be easily found, there are many quests concerning pictures and artists. It all fits well with graphics themselves.

Alexander M I've often said this about oblivion, and in my opinion, what makes it a better game than Skyrim in the artistic sense. Skyrim has wonderful designs and scaling with history etc. But the art fails to capture a lot of the colours that are necessary to say "This is a fantasy world." Which is super important in a game like that.
@alem6239
@alem6239 6 жыл бұрын
@@morgankunkel1123 I would say it fits with the atmosphere of Skyrim. It's a moody land where civil war and dragons' inception take place, etc. For example, Empire is weak, everyone feels fear of Thalmor. That is why Skyrim is not so bright and full of colors (if you meant it). And, of course, because it is the most northern place of Tamriel.
@D10H
@D10H 6 жыл бұрын
Well Alexander, you have to keep in mind the social and historical path of every nation in Tamriel. In VVanderfel and Morrowind you see more wall painting and decorated carpets. Dunmer art is somewhat more tribal and simplified. Imperials, thanks to the opportunity of trading ideas with other nations have developed a much more complex art-style.

While the graphics kinda sucked, I would say Oblivion was clearly the pretty game out of the main 3 Elder scrolls. Morrowind was the biggest feeling game, even the stuff you could pick up and spells you could cast, it was just so vast. I think the fast travel in the other 2 made them seem more manageable in size, but walking and jumping almost everywhere in Morrowind was a pain in the ask.com... I will be honest, I didn't like Skyrim... it was gimmicky, buggy, gray, the main quest felt shoved down my throat, and if you know anything about how I like an elder scrolls game, I may care about their Divo-politalical struggles but I don't do a main quest... I never did the Vivic quest, or the Dagon quest. I mean it's on my to do list but more like, how Link needs to catch Cocos for a bottle before he can fight Ganon...

@MyUsualComment
@MyUsualComment Жыл бұрын
@@CWG74 I think I may be the wrong person to answer this question as I may be biased. I've invested hundreds of hours into this game on multiple platforms, so I'm always going to say it's absolutely still worth playing. However, it's very different to the next entry in the series (Skyrim), which most people consider superior (I strongly disagree). It's also much more difficult. It's not uncommon for people to argue that the correct difficulty to play this game is somewhere around 25-30% of the difficulty slider (it goes from 1-100% and defaults to 50%). This is mostly due to its quirky leveling system which levels monsters alongside you. This has the effect of creating virtually immortal enemies if you don't level the correct skills. Despite all this, it's still my favorite game. You just have to pay attention to your leveling and make sure to understand which skills will cause you to level up, and which don't (leveling up will make the game progressively more difficult rather than easier, which is somewhat contrary to most RPG conventions).

@@MyUsualComment thanks. I watched my friend play morrowind growing up and that and oblivion look a lot more appealing to me than Skyrim. We are homeless now and havent been able to visit such games since 2018-2024 after losing everything in the transition. The only family fun we share now i guess could be labelled as a very long family camping trip with a few visits to a shelter or hotel room in between. Since our homelessness our spoiled relatives have abandoned us. Posts like this are comforting reminders of the good times we are striving to return to and keeps us striving not to give up. The worlds in these games..with thier souns, characters and music.. they are home to us..or a part if home that represent the happiness in it when we had it. The creators or even you the poster of this clip probably didnt imagine this being so meaningful to another.. or maybe you did.. but there it is. This represents the good in my familys life. I lost my mom to cancer when I was 17, and even though Skyrim had just come out (and I do love Skyrim as well,) I was playing Oblivion because of the comfort and nostalgia it brought me. A true masterpiece in every sense of the word. I'd love to know what everyone's favorite city was, I'll go first, mine was Leyawiin.
