Also just the thought of carrying a very expensive prop as an EDC and risk losing or damaging said prop. Plus if you can work something with regular items you’re good to go any time.

I agree with you, in general. However, there are apps that are the key to the effect. AND the best of them use the spectator’s device. For example P.E.P. is an email prediction - email sent to the spectator. This becomes a personal memento (an email message). Or The Instant Card Magician which allows the spectator to perform a card miracle themselves.

I’ve created a phone effect that is impromptu and uses the spectators phone. I like it due to it being a personal item and it’s a mental effect. I don’t think technology is ruining magic, I believe when placed at the right time it can make a big impact. There are instances where I see magic with technology that if a utility fails you can pivot into something similar to follow through but other than that I feel it’s good when used minimally and in the right moment.

I believe there is a difference between some of the technology of which you speak and the smart phone. Most people know there are apps and things a smartphone can do to make things magical. Everyone knows what a wallet is but don’t have one that writes on business cards. Phone tricks are almost a category by themselves for this reason.

@@kevinswiz i both agree and disagree at the same time. Lately I have been doing more magic with my iPhone and people love it. Noone is suspicious it is an “app.” I think it all boils down to the effect itself and how the magician performs it. I do agree though that some applications are terrible and make it clear you are using an app to do the magic trick.
