It was sort of validating hearing you heckle The Heckler. I fell in love with Ambush Bug after seeing him in the Secret Six Doom Patrol crossover. I read all of his miniseries and wanted more. The clerk at the comic shop recommended The Heckler. I picked up the whole series and I felt like I was missing something because I love Giffen and felt he could do no wrong. Every few years or so, I'd re-read the series but it just felt like it was a joke that I wasn't in on. I always thought it was something deeper and more surreal than Morrison's Doom Patrol, and I was just too dumb to understand it. Glad to hear that that isn't the case.

If I'm not mistaken, The Heckler was in a way a sort of commentary on the status of comics at the time and how formulaic they had become. From the 9 panel pages to John Doe the Generic Man. I loved the series, by far one of my favorite DC comics, just the idea that someplace as mad as Delta City was just hanging out in the DC universe was quite enjoyable.

The panel layout in The Heckler was not a parody of Watchmen. For whatever reason, Keith Giffen fell in love with that structure years earlier and it dominated his run on the Legion of Superheroes (which the Bierbaums also scripted). Personally, I found his art's storytelling on the Legion to also be hit or miss and there were many times when I wasn't sure what had happened in a given panel. Giffen is a creator with some great ideas but his execution can definitely be hit or miss.

I think what works well about this particular program is that you move through the comics in a reasonable amount of time and present a balance between good and bad material, not just in title but in practice. You also have good interplay.

The more you talk about The Heckler, the more I feel it's a parody on Steve Ditko's work on Charlton/DC. The Heckler itself is very much like Creeper, you guys even mention a dude that looks like The Question, I think someone could make more correlations if anybody actually knew this book exists.

That Ragman mini from 2016, BTW, is incredible. I loved it, as someone who only knew about Ragman from Injustice and the Arrow TV show. I'd recommend a Back Issues on it, even. It's that good.

Yeah, kinda. The new justice league dark book with wonder woman in the leadership role would probably be your best bet. It's not as funny but its the most magic based thing coming out right now. Its only on issue to 2, so you could catch up quick.

The reason is sadly because the books don't sell to well. Shadowpact was awesome and brought out the magic side of the dc universe when there was no justice league dark. I've actually spoken to the writer of shadowpact and he said the it was a great book to write but it got lost due to middling sales and the new 52 on the horizon.

The Heckler was a character that pre-dated Deadpool in terms of comic fourth wall breaking. It's a very underrated series from the eighties alongside Blue Devil and Ragman.

Dan Cassidy wasn't the star, just a stuntman/VFX wizard. He built the Blue Devil exosuit so he could do his stunts. 2-3 time stronger and able to jump kinda thing. His trident is a prop with a small rocket engine for boosted throwing, he later uses to ride on. The demon knew Dan was a fake, so blasted him enhancing his suit's abilities and bonding it. Later when he refused to revert Dan to normal, he enhanced the trident too IIRC.

The Heckler created Lobo plus the first Lunatik in Marvel. A jokey caricature for sarcasm in 1990, the series was too out of the box for readers only to last 6 issues.

I just thought of something that makes the entire first issue at least partially make sense for the Heckler. Morphing signs, odd timing, and the Heckler talking to the audience or simply somebody we don't see... what if Delta City was the home of Danny the Street? What if he and Stu are low key BFF's? Or maybe Stu thinks he's going crazy and seeing things when the city literally appears to be talking to him and doesn't actually know it's Danny?!

Obscure comic characters are like that idea you have for a movie. Except you don't really have an idea for a movie, you have a gimmick. Except it's not really a gimmick, it's more of a costume design and a "cool" sounding name. And tha's why they don't last long. At most, they have an "interesting" background, but then they're not developed much from that.That being said, there are some obscure characters I like (Dial H, the Creeper, The Losers).

Blue Devil was a typical 80's comic book for kids, hence why it's corny. Heckler was just Giffen given free reign to do anything he wanted and he's sucked ever since and I've hated his art ever since. Ragman wins by default.
