Can you say anything towards why the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive did not sell well in Japan?
@jonice3216
@jonice3216 6 жыл бұрын
@@mogo9052.. at that time arcade game market was bigger than console market in japen. Sega was no.1.but as most people know sega made idiot decisions than their competitor in console market. It causes negative images to Japanese gamers. As well as this japen society prevaded what they want to ride on winning side.I don't how to say in English. I think most close word is bendwagon effect.

Jon Ice I That happened here aswell. However, it happened after they dropped support for the 32X. It made them look so bad. At least in my eyes. They dropped the Sega CD and really the Genesis/Mega Drive aswell. However, that was eay after. I was asking why Mega Drive never took off in Japan from the start. Was support for Nintendo just too strong?

There were probably a couple of factors. In the early 90s, multi-console households were much less common than they are now, so you had to pick one. The Super Famicom was home to exclusives such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Street Fighter 2. Those three exclusives alone made choosing the Super Famicom over the MD almost a no-brainer in the Japanese market.

8:25 I beg to disagree sir. We have Lode Runner on an 8bit system to compare it too. While the nes version is just fine the way it is, this is a closer version even with the graphical overhaul than the nes. Seeing the entire playing field is such a boost for the player. And 8bit consoles were capable of it, but no where near as nice looking as this.

One of the worst things Sega ever did was release the Dreamcast in Japan in 1998. That early release was terrible timing, and the Japanese gamers that had bought millions of Saturn systems and supported it strongly for years didn't want it replaced so soon.

Wow I didn't even know they had 32-Bit versions of Whizz! Your assumption that it is based on a 16-bit game is correct because the game originally came out on Amiga and MSDOS in 1994 that I had never played cause it was only released in Europe. I only got to play the Super Nintendo version which game out for the US in 1996. I was never crazy about the game and but did enjoy it in short 10 to 15 minute spurts for all the same reasons you mentioned. I'll admit I came across a couple of your videos months ago which I enjoyed but like a dummy I didn't subscribe to you at that moment and didn't bump into your videos again until today. Great video. These are the b-level titles you look at once you’ve played all the a-level blockbusters. The quality isn’t as good but there are some gems for the true collectors. Mighty Hits and Liquid Kids are the nest of this bunch. Ninpen disappoints if you’re expecting Mario 64, and it should have been better, but it has some charms. Ninja Ja-Ja Maru Kun looks hideous but has pretty good gameplay now and then (a couple stiff drinks are required). Hissatsu could have appeared on the SNES. I’ll need to play that more to see if it’s any good. FMV shooters are always painful.

Man, oh man, I feel your pain with "Steeldom", lol. That's why I don't get fighting games that are just straight ports of arcade games - like Hamster's SNK Arcade Classics Archives - anymore. When the only mode available is Arcade Mode and the A.I. is legit looking to just destroy you before you can even learn the controls and techniques (or worse, if there's no practice mode and special move menu to even _look up_ the controls and techniques at all), it's just no fun. It definitely looks kinda neat, and reminds me of "Robo Pit 2" for the Playstation more than "Virtual On" thanks to the slower pace and lack of lock-on camera, but holy heck that looks brutal. Oh and "Death Throttle" is a way cooler name than "Quarantine", imo. I never knew it had a different name, or released in Japan at all. This list was just loaded with cool stuff - thanks for showing it all off!

I like Whizz, as I said to a aquainted fellow when I was in my teens I showed him the box art and said could you say no to this face? the problem with Whizz for me is that one runs out of time too much, but otherwise the idea for this game is good in it self, I like the Genre save the fact that, when you are timed this is making it hard to explore the levels and realise how to move about with the puzzle elements involved in this gaming experience. Sonic 3D does not have the aspect related to it with runing out of time, moreover it is just there in relation to giving the gamer bonus Points, Whizz would have benifited - in truth- having been put out with some saving feature also

My opinion may be unpopular but I believe that the Japan only releases are overhyped. A lot of the games look like they would run on SNES and that's not a good look for a 32 bit console. The reason I'll always respect the Saturn is because it had unique ports of 'universal' games like Resident Evil as well as polygon based games like Nights and even semi-obscure ports of standard games of the era that look and feel just a bit different on the Saturn (not naming names). I think the Saturn should be remembered for its polygon and 3d games as well as SOME stand-out 2D titles like Street Fighter Alpha ports or whatever but not generic platformers that were not even Saturn exclusives like Rayman or some other depressing greyness. Looking back it feels like Saturn was caught between two distinct eras and Japan stayed 'pre-modern' longer than the west with those mediocre looking 2d games that reminded us of early 90's technology while simultaneously going toe to toe with mid 90's 3D worlds, lifelike audio and environments that have stood the test of time and become a part of history.

My friend got me a copy of Liquid Kids for $75 off Ebay from a seller in France, this was several years ago though, and no way in hell will it ever show up that cheap again (that same friend got me Elevator Action Returns for Saturn for $20 after I found one for that cheap, he was helping me to start my Saturn collection off on the right foot at the time. This, Bubble Symphony, and EAR were my Taito starts, Gradius, Salamander, and the Parodius titles, my Konami starts). It is by far THE best game on the Saturn IMO, the 2D visuals are crisp and the sound is crystal clear. The colors really are vibrant and jump off the screen at you, more so than the versions of all 3 games on Taito Legends/Memories (Memories only for PS2 as Legends had no Bubble Symphony), which despite having all 3 games in 1 wonderful collection, all have screen filters on them, but I am thankful to have all Japanese and US volumes for Taito stuff.

awesome compilation I played a few of late games years later thanks to saturntorrents in the 2000s..shh! The last rare import game I've played was Planet Joker which was a below average shoot'em up. the only other 2 games I don't see many people review (and I still have yet to play..)- Terra Cresta 3D and G-Vector.

Because the Saturn lasted in Japan years after the US and Europe markets disappeared, there were many games released people never heard anything about. Even I missed a bunch of em.

Would have been nice to have a list of obscure, but GOOD, saturn JP games... and you know ones that are actually exclusive to Japan lol Right out of the gate your talking about a PAL released game. Otherwise, I enjoyed the video.

I have the PAL versions of Chaos Control, Mighty Hits and Whizz. Chaos Control is indeed terrible, but I actually kind of like Whizz, especially the soundtrack. It is pretty rare too. Mighty hits isn't common either. Not bad, but I got bored quickly.

when I was in 1-3 in school or sometime around that we used to play Jetpack on the MS-DOS engneered computers, we put it on floppy discs and brought games like that home from school in this way, and it has a design which in turn today reminds me of what I see in Load Runner. It seems like an easy game to handle and play bit by bit, this leads to the matter which is that I would like to purchase this game, now that I have a Game Shark and CD PLUS cartridge, it really looks like a totally perfect game for what I look for when I go into game collecting with emphasis och games that do not demand to much intense playing but till keeps the interest going, like those game Pengo, pueinguin Land, Flicky and the like which are things I would like to add to my Collection, after which I can play it bit by bit time and time again. I would have requeted it as an import from the Shop were I have shopped and swapped many titles: but I am now saving up currency to make it happen as such for me to get this Sony Hi-Fi Micro System to play Compact Disc records as I am tired of having Always to listen to Equipment that only has built in speakers.

So, question from a filthy gen z, how did importing work during the mid 90s? Sure the internet was around, but was it advanced to the point you could shop online at all, let alone for Japanese games to be shipped to the other side of the planet? Or did you have to call up someone who you knew who could set up an import through their channels or something? Also "exposed to" is the perfect way to describe Whizz, especially with that name, lol
@SegaLordX
@SegaLordX 3 жыл бұрын
It was all phone orders from ads in the back in gaming magazines before the internet. Most import places were in bigger cities like NY and SF, so you had to order it over the phone and pay for it when it arrived(COD). It was an imperfect system that often left you with games that absolutely sucked. No returns.
