The thing is: why muscle cars are so great? Handle like a boat, no brakes at all, sucks gasoline like a person would do with water in a desert...and I still love all of them! When you turn on the engine, they sound like the end of the world, you feel like Mad Max or something, I can't explain, I simply love it! The world would be boring without a good American V8. Great video!

People forget that American muscle could and DID compete with the best Europe had to offer. Carroll Shelby SPANKED Enzo Ferrari at his own game on his own continent. Three years running the Fords totally dominated the Ferrari's. American ROADS were wider, more forgiving and MOST importantly far longer than European roads. We have states bigger than European countries. So cars were built to match conditions. That "boat" was appreciated on a thousand mile trip. And we, as opposed to the Europeans were more concerned with 1/4 mile acceleration than handling. Just a difference in taste. When gasoline was dirt cheap and before we KNEW about pollution what was a few gallons of gas? And finally, the "cheap" European iron , equivalent in price to our muscle cars were no match in any department. A different time, with different needs. I recall the early European imports to the USofA. Total and complete JUNK. Peugeot anyone? Fiat? What did the original Cobra sell for? $3000.00? Yep, European body, chassis and brakes, but how bout when the 427SC made its debut? Brand spanking new from the ground up. Needed a bigger tubular frame, suspension and even the body was totally different. Huge fender flares to accommodate the giant tires, bigger engine compartment to handle the big block. The Cheetah didn't get the press the Cobra did, but it too was far superior to anything the Europeans made. And the Japanese were building crap at the time. Russia? HAHA!! For its time, the American automobile MORE than held its own. Okay, Ford's giving up cars, with GM to follow suit. But who competes with the Ford F series? Or the GM pickups? The Ram sadly is now Fiat, so we can throw that baby out with the bath water. But American iron had nothing of which to be ashamed. It did what it was supposed to, and did it very well.

Felipe Grijo so you say good American V8 and talk about mad max, mate mad max is Australian, the cars are and it’s set here. America didn’t make the only muscle cars, that’s what I see all of you say, it’s so annoying.

fudger03 I think you got wrong what I said. I know that Mad Max is an Australian cop that drives an aussie car, a Ford Falcon XB GT that I love, specially the John Goss model. I know that Knight Rider drives a Holden Monaro, another aussie coupe. I never said that Mad Max was American. I said that the American V8 makes me feel like Mad Max. I know that the V8 is part of the aussie culture too. Take the V8 supercar chapionship for example. By the way, one of the modern V8 that I most like is the HSV Maloo, another aussie V8. I don't know if you got wrong what I said or if you're frustrated with something and want to fight, but I won't fight because a simply comment that I made. And I didn't offended anyone. Depends,my 71 Challenger RT 383 ran mid to low 13's and got 26 mpg highway..383 Magnum/727 and 3.23 gears..Car had 76,000 miles back in 1978.. My 68 Charger RT 440 Magnum/727/3.23 got 22 mpg highway and 18 average mixed city/highway,once you floor it like any new car gas mileage goes way down.. Stopping from 60 mph is 107 feet and most old cars when you had power front discs stopped straight and quick under 130 feet,even full size cars...Problem people say they dont stop as they have 4 wheel non power drums thus they think they dont stop ! These old cars handle really good,remember old cars came with 185 75 even 80 series tires thus higher side wall improves road comfort,but hurts handling...With Mopars you can adjust the height of the front suspension in 5 minutes raise or LOWER it to improve handling,it really turns them into slot cars..I live where there are lots of canyon roads and it sticks to the curves at well past the limit ,no not like a Viper but better than the average new car !!

2:00 There's a "383" call-out on the hood louver. The 383 is a 6.3-liter displacement, not 7.2. 2:55 the Ford 7 Litre package used the 428 engine that was, ironically, closer to 427 cubic inches than the Ford 427 was. 4:25 Studebaker never advertised the horsepower ratings for any of the Avanti models. The numbers bandied about as gospel are low-ball estimates; actual figure for the R2 based on published acceleration and speed trial data put the R2 well over 300, and the word on the street was that no R3 engine left Granatelli's shop until it had tested at least 411 horsepower on the dyno. Speaking of the Avanti's top speed, Granatelli's team using carefully tuned, but stock-specification examples established numerous Bonneville records both in the 3-5 liter class and in the unlimited class. The flying mile record was 170.78 mph. On the whole, nothing presented in this video is anywhere near "Obscure". Verdict? CLICKBAIT!

+Brandon Fontaine If it is a K-code, the factory didn't put it in there. The 289 Hi-Po was not offered in Falcon. It was available only in the '63-65 Fairlane, 64-67 Mustang, and '64-65 Mercury Comet. The hottest mill offered in Falcon was the "A'-code 289-4V, 225 hp. He also botched the specs for a Hi-Po; it was 271 hp at 6,000 rpm. He also FUBAR'd the 7-liter Galaxie. While the 7-Liter was optionally available with the 427, the specs he listed suggest the 345-hp 428, which was the standard mill in that model. The 427s were offered in 410 and 425 hp (single and dual-quad) versions in '66-67. The Hp rating was reduced to 390 hp in '68 (hydraulic lifters, single-quad, auto trans only), and was officially on the options list for the Galaxie, but no records that any were actually built. Also, the '7-Liter' option was dropped in '68, though you could still tick the options list just so and 'roll your own'. The engine DID make its way into Mustang and Cougar, and I think a few Fairlanes, before being discontinued mid-year.
@tomswinburn17786 жыл бұрын
xaenon--I looked at that Falcon bit again. You're right. It said 275 HP, which is 4 more than the HiPo and a top speed of 142? Uh, I don't think so. Not in factory trim. It looks to me like he was getting his figures from current owners, who were quoting HP, torque and times from their personally modified cars. That Falcon was NOT that quick 0 to 60 and the 142 MPH was a fantasy. That said I'd STILL love to own it. Or most any of the cars featured. Leno owns a 68 Galaxie that he left looking pretty stock, but with WAY upgraded suspension, brakes and a MONSTER crate engine. Goes without saying custom wheels and massive meats. It'll blow the doors off pretty much anything in the quarter, plus outhandle sports cars. The brakes will stop it on a dime, and with no fade after repeated panic stops. Course Leno has more money than God. He had the suspension custom built, with three tries before getting it right. No expense spared. Must be nice.

+Tom Swinburn I just realized that Falcon isn't a real Sprint, either. The Sprint package was only available in the hardtops and convertibles - his is a sedan. A few muscle car owners do have Priuses in their drive way , just so you know

The first "Ford Falcon Sprint" was not a Falcon Sprint. It was a 62 falcon that someone had put a small block Ford into it. I did the same thing with my 62 Falcon.

After watching the video, I'd like to hang my hat on the Chrysler 300 H. Beautiful, fast, and I'm sure would be a great ride on the Interstate. What gets my goat is seeing a STUDEBAKER spank a SUPERBIRD! I mean, really ? Definitely NOT the stock 289.
@davidhooper94664 жыл бұрын
It only spanked the 'bird 'til the halfway point...ain't no substitute for cubic inches!

I'm surprised I didn't read this elsewhere, but the Dodge/Plymouth 440 with a single 4 bbl carb was not 380 HP, but factory rated at 375. If you ordered the "six pack" it was 390.

That studebaker should have came with wheelie bar wheels on that exhuast. Looks like a damn wheelbarrow. Bet it was popular. Looks like a kit car.

The orange Plymouth GTX clearly had 383 on the hood, still nice though.

Definitely a roadrunner.
@rubenwatkins20904 жыл бұрын
Heap, says 383 on the hood and it even has the road runner in the black stripe. Also no GTX emblem on the grill. Basically a road runner became a GTX if it had a 440 under the hood. Still the car has beautiful lines. Miss those days.

Why does the GTX have 383 emblems on the hood scoops if it has a 440?

Great list, personally I'm not a fan of the Cyclones front clip and prefer the Gran Torino, which I believe was offered with the same engine and power train options.

My first was a 67' Pontiac Catalina sedan. Not exactly classified as a "muscle car" but it was definetly the fastest vehicle I had ever owned and I've owned a BB muscle car and a few pony cars.

@@mikefishhead My friend had a 72 Charger with the 383 V8. It didn't have the six pack and it was an ugly mint green color but it was all original, with no dents or rust.
@craigkdillon6 жыл бұрын
Another one, which I love the lines of is the Cadillac Eldorado 1958. Probably a bit heavy to be a muscle car, but you could get it with a large V8.

The most smokin' hot Studebaker is still... well, a Studebaker. Nice styling though.
