To draw successfully we need to train ourselves to observe all the visual clues available to help us accurately portray our subject. Learning to see the between shapes not as empty space but as defining areas is a great help in this. As Stephen's third example shows, it can have some surprising benefits

This series has been one of the best and highly informative architectural teaching I've ever seen. Thank you, sir! Also, if it's possible, can you make videos on how to draw interior in perspective while also incorporating simple shape/negative spaces? I think your way of teaching could've helped so many young artist out there.

Thanks Rei. I really appreciate your enthusiasm. Possibly a series on interior spaces would be helpful. I'll give it some thought. :)

I finally understood draw what you see not what you thing you see; and also learned to draw between shapes rather than the object it self. That was helpful! Thanks!

Once we learn to use them for our drawing, we have doubled our reference points for observation. Huge difference! 😀

I'd find it useful if you talk about studying the values of a color photo or real life (I know i can turn pictures to b&w using a software).

Yes, using the phone photo app to take out the colour is a great way of seeing relative values. I do it quite often, although I never feel obliged to stick with the app outcome. This really ties in with understanding shade, shadow and local colour in monochrome as well. It's a great area, and I'll try and get to at least part of it. Appreciate the suggestion. :)
