find someone that loves you as much as Faizal loves Portugal

Hey Faizal, Lisbon local and fellow photographer here, love your videos, have learned a lot from your stuff. Two toughts I'd like to share: -I also like to go places and take photos. More often than not, I realize I'm objectifying the subject for selfish (personal, artistic, whatever you want to call it) reasons. If I don't move past that, then I'm merely a tourist. Only when I engage with the local culture, habits, (and specially the) people, I can call myself a traveler. Regardless of what I choose to do (either thing is OK), I never forget how previleged I am to be able to go somewhere, and it gives me courage to go more towards the traveler route. And to your point, how real can a place feel if you just look at it? -Unfortunately, tourism in Lisbon has benefited very few people, and harmed the rest. Insane cost of living increase, housing crisis, etc. To say it's the tourists' fault is unfair and not true. But visitors do represent an inherent contribution to this unbalance. And when they visit, they're more concerned about leisure, not social impact (it's normal), so when local people have negative attitudes towards them, it breaks this opaque glass wall between the two. Be aware that visiting a place is unlike a roller-coaster ride where you don't leave the safety of your cart. Having said this, we welcome everyone with good intentions and genuine curiosity about the city 🙂

Not crazy! I totally relate. I lived in Taiwan for 8 months ish back in 2015-17. I’m in the US in a very suburban area. It feels like a dream totally in general. I’ll be going back in 2 weeks and I’ll see if I can relate more when I’m back but when I see my photos from before makes me think of the dream

I'm both a photographer and a local and even recently I commented with someone doing one of my tours that I often feel on both sides of "the fence". I don't take every mundane photo of a person, only when I feel it's worth it because I'm a photographer and I value what to me is an image worth saving and sharing but I try not to be close to the person I'm photographing in order not to make them feel "invaded" and even then the photos I publish with people, who's permition I didn't ask, as a subject are rare. I'm also a local who's constantly avoiding being photographed by others and I don't even live in a "touristy" area so I can only imagine the number of times it happens to them. I'd say if the image itself is worth it (and each one must be responsible for that decision) then take it, but if it's about a person, then what good are the photos if there's not a single word exchanged to back them up. Regarding "Déja vu", I'm frequently photographing the same areas because my work requires that. I'd say it gets a bit repetitive sometimes but the interesting part about it is trying to find a new aproach in the same place. I'll try different cameras, different lenses but mostly just wait for something different, when possible.

The first time I visited Lisbon I was just so awestruck with the beauty and of course the difference from the states. Yes, I got great images...But the second time (18 months later) I was more focused and more comfortable and had a more specific agenda. I also noticed a difference in the local atmosphere...like they are really getting tired of having their wonderful country "invaded". I totally get it Faizal.

Been to Lisbon once about 3 or 4 years ago on our way to Porto for a Douro riverboat cruise. From what I'm seeing on social media , the anti tourist sentiment is really growing, in Portugal , Spain & especially Venice. Going to the south of Portugal in March/April for 4 weeks in 2025. Hope it's a little more peaceful.

Thanks you for wording my thoughts about traveling perfectly. It feels like a dream. The place cant exist can it? I know it happened, but it doesn't feel like it. The second visit tho, that is something even more interesting and remarkable than the 1st visit. Im from europe, so visiting other countries is easier, than it would be if I was from us, thats why I had the chance to be in Italy twice, once in France, Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. Im also in Morocco right now. But the most growth I have experienced in my work was troughout the second time in Italy. Although the places were diffrent, its still the same country, same people and architecture is also the same, I was focusing on completely diffrent things. I gave up on those typical travel photos. This will sound corny, but I was always looking the other way. Revisits are something I wanna do more. Of course because of the said "growth", but also to look at the other side of those streets. Another things, do anyone who is still reading noticing change in their style/approach after visiting new place? I always find something new to look for or after that I then include in my photography back home. Great video Faizal.

Yeah I'm also interested, I'm considering the visoflex, but is it not kinda of slow for street photography?

I’m thinking of embarking on a 3 month European tour by myself. Have you ever travelled solo for an extended period of time? If so, how was that for you? Any tips or suggestions? - I’ve not been to Istanbul but am contemplating it, Budapest, Jordan, and tons of other places via Eurail.

Faizal are you still in Lisbon? Give me a shout as I can take you to several photographic gems, as Lisbon is my city. This means Street photography Gems which are not on the "turist guide" involving the "B" side of Lisbon.... Cheers!

Almost anywhere in Japan is a great place to photograph. It’s also great practice on your ninja techniques. Best to really practice the while you there, and not be like the kinda “foreigner IG-Style glam shooters”. I really don’t know how to explain that style of photographers, but hopefully you understand what I mean? Those types really don’t sit well with the locals there. I’ve met a few older ninja photographers during my trips visiting Japan. Myself not even noticing a few of them until they came over to speak with me 😅

Please explain what a ninja photographer and a foreigner IG-Style glam shooter are. I've never seen those terms before.
