I've been restoring bikes for years with the odd engine rebuild and have to say that you have a gift, although I know how most of it all works but I wouldn't be able to explain things nearly as clearly as you do. thanks for sharing this gift with us. great vid as always.

I see have answered a rough total cost question, I was hoping you would. Huge money, but as a long term Aprilia owner and a previous " Ebay-dog " KTM 950 SM restoration I am used to parts prices looking more like the dealers phone number ! Very enjoyable, along with BMW s1000rr refresh and SP 1 restoration, highly recommended viewing. Thanks Dave.

You are a mechanical genius 😁👍🏻. Love watching your vids matey..

Ha, parts supercessions...yes. in my experience its usually due to a supplier change, but in some cases it can be due to warranty dept reporting repeat failures to QA/QC who upon investigation perform a redesign or material change on a part which results in a part number change. Better that it's done than not, at least they are taking action.

Fair play to you, you must have been a dab hand at finishing those jig saw puzzles of yesteryear! I'm hoping you'll say new KTM bikes are easier to work on..... Excellent tutorial BTW

I did an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, based on industrial gas turbines. But the basics of the mechanics are similar, and I've been taking stuff apart and rebuilding since I was a kid. I like to understand how it all works and for me the best way to learn is to see it in bits

It's really interesting comparing this, to the videos you did of rebuilding an S1000RR engine. The BMW engine I would not hesitate to do myself - this one seems a little daunting 😨
@obsession_engineering Жыл бұрын
And you'd be right, the BMW engine is built in a very logical and well engineered fashion, the KTM feels a lot more like an old design tweaked to make it bigger. Much more involved to work on

I’m about to go through a similar journey.🤦🏼♂️ what was the rough cost for all of these parts? Tempted to get a full engine replacement. Used.

Best part of £1600 in parts, so a complete engine probably isn't a bad idea

I have a 990 supermoto. Great fun, have done the all the regular maintenance & repairs. Reading the "other Germans" manual vs USA, Japanese, and UK (Triumph) manuals is entertaining. USA & UK: here's generally how you could do it, and here's the intended result. Japanese: if you do this any other way Godzilla will awaken and destroy Tokyo - do you want to be responsoble for that? Freaking German: we designed it, we built it, We know the Only Way this Will be done. Read, compeehend, or better yet, send it to someone that We have trained. Well, this does help me with my issue - a sloppy/jerky transmission. I learned it doesn't have a primary chain that is stretched. Onward to find the problem....

Hi Dave, Great video series mate. I note you mentioned the revised pinions but I am also interested in the clips themselves, were they the same as the originals or have they been changed as well? Keep up the good work! :D
@obsession_engineering3 жыл бұрын
The clips haven't changed (unfortunately). Think a badly set quick shifter was a lot of the problem though
@Youchoob13 жыл бұрын
@@obsession_engineering Do the revised pinions have a bit more undercut on the dogs perhaps? But I I’m hearing what your saying re the quickshifter set-up. Great video’s anyhow👍
@rogerwilliams29023 жыл бұрын
Im puzzled by your remark about the " dry sump " system. You know a lot more than me about motorcycle engines, but surely this engine is wet sump, otherwise there would be an external tank ?. Excellent video again.
@obsession_engineering3 жыл бұрын
The oil has to be pumped into the tank, which could have been anywhere but is cast into the front of the case, so to me it's a dry sump as the oil can't just free flow into it
@rogerwilliams29023 жыл бұрын
@@obsession_engineering Thanks for the explanation Dave . Looking forward to the next instalment. Cheers

Any idea why the circlip failed? I love watching you work!
@obsession_engineering3 жыл бұрын
Quickshifter settings and an enthusiastic rider won't have helped, could be as simple as material fatigue. There's no single definite reason
