I have a piece of obsidian from Hawaii with flecks of green in it that only show up when light hits it just right. Could you do a video on why obsidian can range so much in color and appearance and (specifically) what could cause iridescence in it?

Loved the show. I love rocks and have since i was a child. Stuffed my nose full of tiny rocks while playing outside in our dirt driveway - about 63 years ago lol. Was telling my granddaughter the tale cause we watched a tv show (9 1 1) and a little boy shoved a toy car up his nose. Took geology classes in college and wished i had made it a career. Gid bless you all!

I love this! You go into so much detail! I myself have quite a good collection going. I have banded, mohoagany, sheen (rainbow and silver sheen), snowflake and regular old obsidian. The sheen stones are my favorite because I love how light can be played with in gemstones such as chatoyancy, sheen, labradorescence, asterism and opalscence. All of which I have a few stones for.

VERY important note. I know i'm late to the party here but Blue/Green slag glass is often sold as "Helenite", "green obsidian", "Blue Obsidian" or "Mount Saint Helens Obsidian". ALL obsidian will appear black/brown/auburn in normal light, and only reveals its true colour when a light is shone through it. As anyone in the states should know, Mount Saint Helens is a protected area, NO rock of any kind may be removed by the private collector. Obsidian that apears green when light is shone through it only occurs in a few places around the world, usually associated with mixed chemistry magma, with the site closest to me in NZ being Mayor Island in the bay of plenty, which was famous for producing very high quality obsidian varieties that would appear green or gold/amber coloured when a torch was shone through them.

Here on the island of Sardinia, Italy, it is used in jewelry as a talisman/bead that is said to keep away the "evil eye" and absorb your negative energy. It is very much a part of the Sardinian culture and tradition and the talisman bead is called "su coccu". As you may know, there is still much archaeological evidence and remains both from the stone age and nuragic period still standing on Sardinia.

Obsidian has been my favorite ore or natural rock I don't think of it as a gemstone. Rubies are gemstones that I love but obsidian is such an important ore in history. I read a lot about history as a kid and I loved Mayan and Aztec history so they used these obsidian weapons and just stones for rituals and war. Before video info thanks for making this

I learned in the old times, the stone age, they used to use it as weapons or to cut. I learned that they can be all sorts of colors. I know there can be some big ones, small ones, and medium ones. They were also used to look at the sun.

Really enjoy these videos you put out. When I was a kid I was really into looking at all the rocks I found in the creek behind my house to see if it was something rare and I liked seeing the big gem stones at museums. One critique I have and its no biggie....is that the videos seem dark...like the lighting or brightness is dark...I crank the brightness on my laptop/phone and KZbin gets super bright white, but the videos are still dark, and have a in the shadow appearance. IDK no big deal :)

From my grade four class! What we learned is: 1. There are different types of obsidian 2. There are many different colours of obsidian 3. There are many shapes of obsidian 4. Obsidian is a rock that happens when a volcano erupts (igneous) 5. Obsidian was used for weapons and tools 6. There can be some rocks that are soft and some rocks that are hard. Obsidian was 5 7. Some obsidian that is really sharp can be used as scalpels in the medical field Our questions were: Where did you find the obsidian? What is the one that looks like an egg called? (grey and white one)
