I had to watch this video at double speed to see if the whole setup would make sense for me-and it does! I was missing a good task-based setup in my knowledge garden, and you've made it work. I'll rewatch the video at normal speed this week. I'm starting a new vault, but my question is how to gradually migrate my existing one… For now I'll start step by step…

@@construct_by_dee I worked my way through the examples, and I think it's relatively easy to adapt your methods into my existing vault instead of starting from scratch. I really appreciate your unedited video approach, showing and teaching that we can learn from mistakes. I've experienced this over the past week; for example, I thought I had typed the code correctly, but when reviewing it, I noticed I had missed a comma or bracket somewhere. Now, I'm going through your daily roll-up video!

I'm 25 mins in and this a lot of good information, been using Obsidian for 2 years now, but never used "#log/task" in that way before... Will have to add this to my watch later as I don't think I can watch and absorb all of it on one sitting. Awesome work though, keep it up! It's super detailed 👍🏻

Glad to hear the log/task made sense! It took a lot of time to try and get this point across and I'll admit that I didn't have a proper way of explaining this concept in the past. Please let me know in a couple of weeks how it went with implementing it - what stuck and what didn't. Strength and Honour!

Thanks for the Video. I took a lot of inspiration from your Vault, but made a few changes, to make it my own (mostly styling, more QoL plugins/css ). And I think this time I got the Idea behind Sprints. Before I thought of them more like recurring tasks and don't put them to any use. But now it seems more like a project history. for normal tasks I write the work done/conversations and other infos with timestamps in list form under the tasks. But for Projects and other big Notes, sprints can act as a revision control and hints for future ideas/tasks. I will give it a try. Thanks again and keep it up.

Also wanted to ask: in GTD and in a number of "second brain" methodologies there is the idea of Areas, basically differentiated from Projects as they are ongoing vs. having a fixed outcome and a completion date. Would you be willing to share any ideas around how you view Areas, and a way to incorporate them into your suggested flow? thanks again for your clear explanations of using Obisidian to a more full potential!
@construct_by_dee
@construct_by_dee Ай бұрын
I see Areas as MOCs (Maps of Content), essentially serving as home pages for different areas. That's enough for me right now, and I don't see the added value in adding another layer, as it might just confuse things. However, I'm always open to changing my mind if someone can convince me otherwise. What are your thoughts on this?
@cmx-v3x
@cmx-v3x Ай бұрын
@@construct_by_dee I am getting to decide very soon! The key differentiators seems to be that Projects "should" finish thus complete (and should be able to "go away" when completed to minimize distraction), while Areas are ongoing. Projects can be a child of an Area, but an Area, given it's ongoing status, wouldn't be a child of a Project. Projects mostly require more active management and task tracking, whereas Areas focus more on monitoring. Projects risk scope-creep and redundancy if not viewed independently of area. In your system it would be easy to treat them the similarly, just note the difference (adding a property or tag or intended completion date could provide that), so they can be managed differently. Or they could be kept in different folders like PARA. I'm not interested in too many folders, but this may make sense as a distinction. Managing off MoC lists makes sense. What is clear to me that building all organically (vs. up-front) makes the most sense. I want to have a clear framework though so the daily notes create something efficient and I'm not figuring out structure so much as a I go along. As with anything, the quantity of what is being managed in the system also plays a role. What works with 10 days will look different after 100 or 1,000.

How do I approach this to organize and manage my college studies?
@construct_by_dee
@construct_by_dee 2 ай бұрын
I'm playing around with a study vault - but it will only be ready in a couple of months. I'd suggest creating a "project" for each subject - and then a corresponding MOC (or home page). Your classes will be treated as meetings - and any valuable insights from those classes will be turned into their own notes which rolls up to your specific home note. For instance: - Project: Math 101 - Class: [[2024-07-23 Math 101 lecture]] - Note created from the class above: [[The Fibonacci sequence]] The note will then be pulled into your Math 101 MOC. I do offer consulting services which I could help you set everything up - if that peaks your interest :)

Hi. Really appreciate your no-nonsense focus on simplicity yet completeness. I've seen other similar functionality be built without using tags, and more metadata and css but your approach using tags seems simple enough and familiar enough (coming from evernote). I had a question concerning you using the tasks [ ] for the restaurant (McD and KFC) examples and it wasn't clear to me why you utilize them there. clearly you don't tag them as tasks, so they don't show up in the dataview as such. It seems this a workaround to obtain a specific functionality. Can you explain? Also curious if this could (or would) interfere with using the Tasks community plugin. I suppose another reason for using less vs. more plugins...
@construct_by_dee
@construct_by_dee Ай бұрын
Hi there! My system is designed for retrieving information in the future. In this example, I considered that I might want to see all the times I've visited a restaurant. Even if I don't need to view it right now, I think about the logs I can create now to make future retrieval possible. So, yes, this isn't a task-it's more like a ledger. I also don't see why this structure and the Tasks community plugin can't work together. For instance, if you want something to be treated as a log, you could use a #type/log tag, filter it out of your tasks or Dataviews when using the Tasks plugin, and similarly, filter out tasks if you only want to see logs. I hope this makes sense, and thanks for the stimulating questions!
@cmx-v3x

@@construct_by_dee thanks. so using the task is more a convenience as to how Obsidian treats them?
@cmx-v3x

@@construct_by_dee yes, retrieval as a priority makes sense, i am noticing a block around changing history, as if the historical record has much value and needs to be sacrosanct. but i can let someone else worry about that when they write my biography - history is done, we only live in the present, and the future is still to come (easier or harder depending...). thanks!

Really appreciate the effort thats gone into this. My only issue is the weekly notes dataview query doesnt return any results and my query matches yours. What else could cause the issue that i could check?
@construct_by_dee
@construct_by_dee 2 ай бұрын
Hi there Jack. A few things that you can check: - Did you perhaps name the folders something different? This weekly query looks in the "Journal" folder - so if your daily notes aren't in that folder with exactly the same name it won't pop up. - Did you correctly add the inline metadata field "Week" in your daily notes? - Does your daily note correctly show the week name? (for instance week:: 2024-W27) - Did you use the same date format? Different date formats might mess everything up. If you still couldn't get it right, send me a mail with a couple of screenshots and I'll get back to you as soon as I have time :)

@@JamsODonnell100 Glad you found the comment useful. I've been thinking to do "parallel" videos with the different formats but it would take way to much energy from my side to do. I do provide some people with consulting sessions where we change everything to their preferred format and make any other changes which could effect the dataviews and plugins. But the easiest solution is to get used to a new date format 😅

I have a question. As I'm working to setup this system, it seems like there should be a section for Logs in the Project Template. I ended up adding it to mine. Is there a reason you don't use it in yours? In my specific instance, I created a log message of the reason that I was starting the project. I'm also curious where you do project planning. Where is the best place to brainstorm what I need to do next on a project and maybe jot down 4 or 5 tasks just for that project? It's not a meeting cause it's just myself. Thanks so much for your awesome work!
@construct_by_dee
@construct_by_dee 2 ай бұрын
Why yellow there. You are completely right. a section for logs other than "sprints" is needed! For the planning portion - I usually treat it the same as a meeting. You can add a tag like "#type/working-session" or "#type-project-planning" instead of the "#type/meeting" - and change the dataview query pulling in the meetings accordingly to add the additional tags to the returned search results. Or create a section for "project planning" only. I would keep the format of these "working or planning" sessions similar to the meetings with it starting with a date YYYY-MM-DD so that you can sort it in your dataview queries for meetings/tasks/planning. For quick tasks you want to jot down - you can do it anywhere in your vault as long as it is in the following format: - [ ] #task Create a powerPoint for [[Project - A]] this will send it through to the task section in your respective project. Hope this helps!

@@construct_by_dee In relation to this, does any work you do on a project get tagged with #log/sprint? Like what if you only had one line in your daily log that said "Called Person X about Y" with a link to your project after it. Then you moved on to other things you had to do not related to the project? Do you add #log/sprint after any work that moves a project forward? or only blocks of time where you are completing multiple items, and the rest just sits in the log area? Thanks so much!

Good afternoon! I'm just starting to get acquainted with Obsidian, many things I do without understanding, the main thing is that it works. Stuck on the moment that the weekly note is not filtered (not displayed) any notes, although this week there are created. Can you please tell me which way to look? Daily note code (Log and Task excluded): --- created-date: summary: --- >Prev: [[ ]] >Next:: [[ ]] >Week:: [[ ]] Weekly note code: ```dataview TABLE WITHOUT ID file.link as Date, summary FROM “Journal” WHERE icontains(week, this.file.link) SORT date ASC ``` If you remove the line “WHERE icontains(week, this.file.link)”, all files are displayed. Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Remember, everything worthwhile in life comes with some struggle, and once you get the hang of this, it will be like a tree that bears fruit all year round! Please try the following weekly template code: ```dataview TABLE WITHOUT ID file.link as Date, summary FROM "Journal" WHERE icontains(week, this.file.link) SORT date ASC ``` If this doesn't work, please share what an actual day and week note looks like so we can continue troubleshooting together. :)
