Knapping obsidian produces conchoidal fractures, which means the more you work it you just get more and more of these concave valleys with sharp edges. It’s pretty much the opposite of what you want for a sphere’s surface. But I’ve always wondered: the part you cut off must be convex, right? And both sides are the same obsidian, so there should be no reason you can’t cut your piece with the curvature going the other way, right? So where are my smooth obsidian spheres?

Unlike what minecraft says, obsidian is actually a fragile rock. It's technically a type of volcanic glass, which is why it's so sharp. It's also interesting to see how the cutting process allows you to see the bands that are in the obsidian.

That was pretty impressive. The pieces with the red in them would have been really nice if slabbed and cut for jewelry. I bet if you'd polished the thin slabs to a fine degree, they'd have been transparent. Obsidian is basically natural glass so anything you can do with glass on the waterjet you could probably do with obsidian. Oh, and if you know how, knapping obsidian can give an edge sharper than any razor. Obsidian scalpels are used in eye surgery where the cut has to be as fine as possible.

Just for the record, obsidian in its purest state is completely black, it could be really sharp and it´is more fragile than glass.
@nathanegbert977
@nathanegbert977 6 жыл бұрын
Obsidian is silicon dioxide which is colorless in pure form. Colors come from impurities. Obsidian is half a point harder than glass on the mineral hardness scale, and will scratch glass and hardened steel. Last I checked, obsidian flakes are still the sharpest edge known to man. The highest grade obsidian I am aware of is called "Burns Green". It is a beautiful green obsidian from Burns, Oregon. It's hard to find samples because the source is on private land. I traded for a bucket of it several years back, it's cool rock.

Actually, that is only true for "window" type glasses. (The most common type, made from mixing Silicon with other minerals, the one almost everything you ever refer to as glass will actually be.) But actual glass, Vitreous Silica, which is pure Silicon, is actually 2 points higher on Moh's Scale of Hardness. (Which means it could, depending on purity of, scratch Quartz, "common" glass, Obsidian, and a lot of other stuff. True glass is hella dangerous, which is one of the other reasons it isn't used for everyday applications. (The first being pure Silicon glass is extremely expensive.))

Oh and if obsidian and flint is properly knapped it actually can cut almost between cells and was one of the first surgical instruments
@johnpossum556

Yeah, there was a PBS episode that said it was probably used in the first cosmetic surgery from mountain climbers who froze their noses off. The surgeons would plant something under the skin up in the forehead and give it time to grow. Once grown they'd cut it leaving some skin intact for bloodflow and flip it down and sew it were the nose used to be. Gruesome, hunh?

relatively accurate, if made properly obsidian cutting edges can be brought down to a literal molecule wide at their edge. because it's glass it has no specific cleavage it shatters along either so the angle of the blade can be very steep while remaining stable (unlike diamond for example which would break along 90 degree angles)

First, obsidian is not a stone, it is a type of glass. Second, Waterjet tanks get filthy. All that stagnant water with all sorts of minerals to feed micro-organisms. I would never have licked that or held it near my eye without cleaning it first. When I worked at a waterjet shop, we had to carry a card that basically told any medical provider to treat injuries sustained on or near the machine as if the injury was had been exposed to raw sewage.
