I never played Everspace 2 or many games really like it, so for me I expect it's a case of it all being new, while for others it's enters an uncanny valley where it's like Everspace 2 - but with more limits on the flight model. I enjoyed the story personally and while I think it could have used more world building and the writing is definitely B-tier, it had some good ideas. I did find Forsaken a bit of a gem for the game as far as characters go. I also expect that part of its popularity right now is because the market for a new good space game with good flight mechanics is quite open. Ultimately Chorus might not be the best space game, but it proving popular may show others that this genre is very much alive and well, and fertile ground for new offerings. Also what can I say? It's the first game I've binged in years.

Incidentally, lack of consistent story and lore is mostly why I don't play ED anymore. Not all games need a story, but for the ones that do, it's interesting how many miss the mark. I'm pretty old-school too, Ant, and X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Wing Commander, Star Fox, Elite ('84), Descent: Freespace and Freespace 2 - plenty of old school games lacked free strafe (often because they flew more like WWII fighters in space) so I don't feel the "need" for it. That being said, I've only played the demo for Chorus, but I liked the flight model right away. I'll probably pick it up once it's on sale and I've worked through a bit more of my backlog.

I've not played the games you referencein the video but you present your argument well with the footage you used. You'll have tell me what you think?... The footage of Chorus you show and the voice acting i heard from it, reminded me of an early Chris Roberts game... Freelancer. That was a game that disappointed in many ways, it had so much potential. Many touted it as an Elite4 substitute, with it being prior to Elite: Dangerous (=Elite). It broke from the on the rails mission based story line of its predecessor (Starlancer) to a loose format that allowed you to roam a bit between missions. After you ran through the storyline, it turned into an open world game allowing you wander where the story did not. In effect Star Citizen v0.01, with a different back story. The real sad part was, the open world part had a static economy and reverted to a state before the storyline started, thus ignoring everything that happened in the story arc. A half hearted attempt at Elite but as flat as the pseudo 3D space maps and flight model it used. I recall the game with fondness but in reality it was ultimately shallow eyecandy, with stereotyped voice acting. That had some fluidly animated characters in full 3D scenes, rarely seen in games at that time. Technology sometimes dazzles. Not sure if this is how you feel about Chorus right now, given your not exactly reviewing it, but that's the feeling I'm getting. Mark as wrong, right or indifferent.

I've just completed Chorus. I enjoyed the story but the last 1/3 felt a bit rushed and I was more confused than anything. The gameplay was great and so where the visuals for a lower tier developer. I liked that it was a space based action rpg and that it didn't have to be a serious sim game. I don't mind Nara's redemption story arch and her and forza's voice work were well done. I can't wait to see what the dev does in the future.

I can't believe i missed on this gem initially. I just finished it two years later and i must say, this game is pretty good. Combat is pretty good and story is not bad either and visuals are amazing. Highly recommend to anyone who hasn't played it yet. Honestly, its one of the better space games i ever played, and i played plenty. It is true that initial story bits of the main character are kind of strange but the more you play it the more you realize why the character did what she did at the start of the game and then through ought it shows character growth through redemption and accepting her faults in what happened and then goes after the real culprit of the whole thing. It sure isn't for everyone, but i personally enjoyed it a lot, especially the gameplay
@slavenmatuhina21513 жыл бұрын
I 100% agree with everything and share your feelings about the game. My 1st disappointment was that there is no way to map the controls to a HOTAS/HOSAS. 2nd disappointment was the inability to roll or strafe up/down or left/right but when you hit the strafe left/right key the ship strafes a bit and rolls full 360 degrees. They basically limited the flight freedom and then made a big deal out of drifting (meaning going in a straight line) in space. Other then the fact that I'm not used to this flight I also don't like it because it feels artificial and forced. You can roll, but only 360, you can strafe but only a little bit...weird. I guess I'm a bit frustrated my skills learned in other similar games aren't transferable for the most part. It's like making a driving game but you can only make handbrake turns or drive in neutral. I can understand why others like it but it's not for me.

Disagree with everything about this review. The whole angle behind the story is that Nara was an Elite operative within a Cult like regime/ Empire if you will, think Chronicles of Riddock Necromongers, or Cleric in Equilibrium. Then the act destroying a planet she does on command is the catalyst to snap her out of this mindset when she senses the sheer horror of what she has done. The game itself though compairable to Everspace in some regards is more traditional in having fantasy space areas that colonies actually live in. The graphics are pretty stunning, the game is heavily dogfighting based and has a couple of difficulty spikes but nothing too overwhelming, which I would suggest is the real reason OA didnt like it, notice there were zero dogfight scenes within the review here. As for comparing it to Senuas Sacrifice and expecting the dialogue to be similiar, that's like picking two different people from entirely different backgrounds and expecting them to behave in the same manner with the same morals. In short, one of the best Space games i've played, the 'hero' ship is also pretty original, with an A.i personality, not the usual run of the numbers design. Shame that didnt really hit due to a poor demo that didnt really convey what it was. One of those games that I can see becoming popular in years to come when some YTuber decides to promote it it as a unsung classic.

Other than that: Flight Model: Elite Dangerous Best PvE Battles: Everspace 2 Complex Player Driven: EVE Online (this one is free to play) Best Graphics and detail: Star Citizen (beware though that it is still in alpha after 10 years of development, and will likely be in alpha for many more years). I tried out the Chorus Demo on steam and found it... odd, hench why I watched this Video. I didn't like it and couldn't put my finger on why, and even after watching this I still don't quite know. There are parts about the setting I like, stuff like the circle and a religious faction being the hegemon of the world, that felt very unique, and I liked how Nara was essentially the bad guy's "chosen one" gone rogue, which I also found super interesting. To me, and this might be very subjective, I find the whole "I killed a planet full of people and now I feel bad about it" to be very interesting too, how religion and faith can lead people to commit atrocities and even if they are irredeemable, they might still regret their actions and form an interesting character. To me a person doesn't have to "go to heaven" at the end of the day to be someone I can root for and feel interested in following. But on the flipside, the world felt shallow. I get it was the Demo but so much of its visual design, its attitude, its behaviour, it all felt like a dollar store space setting. The oppression of a religious group was not portrayed any differently from the oppression of a dictatorial regime or evil alien empire, and yeah you can say there is a message in that, but i also feel like it's a huge missed opportunity to not have the setting be more ostentatious, more ceremonial, more faith-driven, and have there be a starker divide between those who believe and those who actively seek to reject faith and belief. It's like it picked a bunch of interesting themes and then did all the usual things with them, making the interesting thematic picks moot. The combat and progression for me was also a turn-off. The flight felt indeed weirdly limiting and more like Ace Combat or an iOS game than a PC space shooter. The UI design could use some refinement as i constantly lost track of my surroundings and where i was being attacked from, by what and how hard. To me it also didn't really feel challenging, but it was difficult and i died a lot. To me for something to be challenging it has to put forth a hard to achieve goal and provide me some feedback, preferably not just by tip-boxes or scores, on how i'm doing. Difficulty is more just dying over and over and not being able to grasp why. There seemed to be some kind of "use the right weapon against the right enemy" thing, but it just felt arbitrary. The laser felt awkward to use, the minigun was fine but dreadfully boring, the missiles were fun enough but were only "effective" against a single enemy type. It felt arcade-y and more like it tried to tick boxes in a design doc than create something engaging. Progression also turned me off seeing it was all just stat buffs of various kinds, "+15% damage when attacking from behind", "-10% cooldown", +X amount healed from Y source". None of those were things i would be interested in seeking out, but they would be fine little bonuses along the way. What I would want in a spacegame like this is a far more radical setting to go with the story, have people react more appropriately to the main character, people seemed waaay too trusting of her, and I would want a much more varied arsenal of weapons and ships (at least variation in how the ship feels). Everspace 2 does this way better, at least in the gameplay, the setting is still fairly standard but so is its themes and story and it all feels appropriate.

Hah lol ... This video was informative to me in a way... In a weird ~way. I mean when it comes to 3rd person action combat space game I keep referring to one and the same game (because out of it`s ~availability and quality It`s what I am "saturated" on) Star Conflict Online. Now when it comes to Chorus I watch second by second play trough on a guy`s chanel when and if he decides to release an episode of it and TBH I am njoying what I am seeing, that being said... I also compare it to what I am familiar with (as I've already explained SCO). And here`s what've I've learned out of this video. Flight controls in Chorus are quite ~Meh I guess. I didn`t realize it by just seeing the game, the weapons for example look very powerful and crisp, but for comparison with SCO... the flight mechanic controls... To further explain here`s how it goes in SCO: You have obvious "W" accelerate forward (you can strict toggle speed with +/- (or any keys on the keyboard you map for it)I think), Deaccelerate/Backwards "S", ship thrusts left "A" (or strafes I think), ship thrusts right "D", Those are the obvious you move with keys in any runner FPS (for lack of better words) a.k.a. Valorant, Fortnite, Any other Bipedal FPS game ever. Now comes the interesting for full 3D (not single plane) movement environment part. You have "Q" for turn ship over it`s central axis right a.k.a. left "wing" down, right one up, "E" for same in reverse (having said same in reverse... I have those 2 buttons of mine swapped for style, hopefully does not mess with my overall direction awareness too much, if we assume I have one.) You also have "alt" lowers ships ~ altitude... (entire ship goes towards where bottom is, except if you are not currently upside down), "Space" ship goes up (same condition as "alt"). You can in game via mods and passives augment the speeds at which any or all of those happen, but those are SCO specific semantics. Now as far as cursor goes... during flight the ship obviously follows it`s general direction and in SCO the guns are with their own ~pointiness (they are not forward of ship locked fire). But the point is the combination of rapid "trajectory" corrections via taps of A,S,W,D (Oh I guess here I throw in with Shift you boost as kind of movement control), Q, E, Alt, Space, + The cursor... You get to experience one hell of an action combat flight arcade~ish space sim, with of course Blazing guns, shooting rockets, smacking skills... This is by all means not SCO commerce... It`s just sort of best tl.dr. I can do of where my interest to watch the second by second Chorus play trough comes from, but now that I know how "limited" (without having it touched myself) the flight controls are... I think my joy of what I am seeing is kind of diminished... As far as story goes... Well know any other way for a single player game to begin and end? o_0 Something at least must be there. BTW SCO is MMORGP in environment as described. (It do takes a lot to reach the ships you will wanna reach if you get into it thou).

Im enjoying it, end of day its a space game which i love. But there not all born of the same ilk. Some are just too demanding and need a lot of time devoted to them, i usually prefer the pick up and play style. Chorus fits my bill with its style, has very nice graphics ( playing on PS5 ) and there isnt a lot of control inputs ( some games have way too many, and you can easily forget them ) Objectives are not bad at all, some are tricky especially the boost and turn ones ( people will know which ) its not so open world either . Dialogue could have done with some work and the voice acting isnt all that ( people voicing it are just using there day to day voice, they should have created a character ) im only on to the 3rd-ish sector/area, but im still liking it. Your ship is well animated some lovely touches to thrusters etc...Defo not meant to be a triple AAA title so should fit alot of peoples budgets its a decent 7/10.

As a long time Galaxy on Fire 2 player, I can say that - to me - the flight model of Everspace *feels* much more like a modernised version of the game I loved than Chorus. Chorus, despite visually looking more similar to GoF2 in terms of ship mobility, feels far too robotic, weightless and restrictive in its flight model. Everspace on the other hand feels so similar to GoF2 when played on controller that I literally guessed it was made by the original creators within 3 minutes of picking up the game, without even the slightest inkling beforehand. It actually feels like you are slinging around a tonne of metal in zero g (also all the ships feel really different and good too), while the combat in Chorus feels entirely too linear for my liking. This, while also adding 6DoF (which GoF lacked *and* Chorus lacks) and having a story that's not edgy enough to shave with is why I've already sunk 20+ hours into ES2 (even though I know my save data will be wiped on full release), while I put down Chorus after half an hour into the truly dreadful demo. Obviously, your mileage may vary, but ES2 is the true spiritual successor to GoF2 in my eyes.

Fortunately for me I guess the same buttons that got pushed for you would be pushed for me. This is a great video.

I've already chosen Everspace 2 over Chorus, but I'm not playing that until it goes 1.0.
@DerPylz3 жыл бұрын
Why would you choose, if you can play both? :D The more space games, the better!

The more space games the better! Right !? :)

My general rule of thumb is that an overly story oriented space game removes the freedom of space itself. Lots of people like that type of game i.e. SW:Squadrons. I guess that's the crowd this game aims at, but that's not my community. Squadrons was a nice game story wise, but I could just watch that on KZbin and be done with it in a week, I guess I'll do the same for this title.

There is another issue for me: no cockpit view. For the same reason, I never played Freelancer.

I wholly agree with your point ...BUT something ticked with Freelancer. Maybe it was just the right game at the right time for me, I got completely engrossed in it and LOVED it.

Freelancer had cockpit view. It was just not the default view lol

It never ceases to amaze me how many spaceship games seem to botch the flight model. It's not complicated, and I kinda think that's why they keep screwing it up lol.

The flight model and constant internal narration and talking heads in the corner of my screen really turned me off. I’d rather wait for Everspace 2 to come to PS5

I´ve played the demo and got utterly disappointed. I had for most parts no idea what I was supposed to do, struggled with a strange flight model that provides absolutely no impression of the ships weight and speed and got bored by an edgy story. So best thing I could say about the game is that I´m thankful for the possiblility to try it out in a free demo.

Well I like cockpit games. Not sure if its a feature in a lot of games you have on review.

Wow I absolutely loathed hellblade... it felt so preachy and irritating almost like it was made by a psychology lobby group or something... and the combat and puzzles were painfully simple and dull. The story may have ended up interesting somewhat but it was more irritating for me than anything.

Yea the game is completely overrated it seems like another propaganda protagonist to.

I would agree Chorus is something I will never play because of the 1st reason... which is also why I won't play Hell Blade either... Chorus also looks like a bad Nintendo Game Cube game

This game reminds me very much somewhat of Descent. But lacks something.

Funny you made the comparison to Anakin, when all I can think about when watching the utterly pointless and repetitive animations of the ship is 'I'll try spinning. That's a good trick'.

Loved the demo for this game that I actually went out and bought it. I think the pc has the best version though. I played it on the ps5 as well and it's also good on there but I like the pc version because it has ray tracing, 4k and 120 fps but not on ps5.

Normally I love your content, but it feels like every criticism you have of this game is about comparing it to another game. How about judging the game purely on its own merits? Like I did. I still found it underwhelming compared to the hype generated from the trailers, but its still fun.

Everspace 2 was very nice but the zooming in and out cutscenes made me feel sick. So i dont like it.

Give it a try bro, story is good, music background at menu screen is good, the main character hides the machine from everyone for years it reminds me of zone of enders. U get to fly some battle ship has the same.power as rebel galaxy.

This video made me really have a good look around and I concluded that there’s room for more than one opinion in the world. Or in my lounge room anyway. And listening to differing opinions can even be fun, interesting and educational! Hey! Maybe… maybe there’s no need for hatred and bigotry! Too far? Sorry I always go too far… that… that was crazy talk. Sorry.

I enjoyed this game. This isn't a space game. Space is just a setting/style here. The most closest gameplay I could reference is Starlink: Battle For Atlas. Great controls, great visuals, strong writing,, wonderful gunfight. But this game doesn't belong here. Compare it with nor Eververse neither Galaxy on Fire :) It's Starlink, that's it. :)

one for a sale looks like. I like me a combat game but weird or clunky controls have put me off many a game before now.

I thought the music was amazing! For me it was the controls.. just couldnt get used to them!

That's how it was for me with Rogue Squadron and it's controls. It really seemed like that game needed a HOTAS joystick, which I don't have and they weren't in stock at that time. I couldn't get used to them on a controller and it put me off playing.

Anyone else sick of video game's that refuse to tell simple storys. We don't need a confusing mess of a story every time. Sometimes simple is better.

I'd say this video almost makes a case about anything being objective about games. It's a shame how many attempt this thing of "this person is reckless and/or bloodthirsty, which has caused much suffering, poor them, they must feel really bad..." Looking at you, Star Trek Discovery...
