THANK YOU for making this available. With 99% of Johnny's shows prior to 1972 lost, anything new is always a treasure.

I loved getting to see this really early show, that set is totally 60s psychedelia. The bit totally fails, but it's just hilarious the way Johnny and Ed make that failure super funny. I wish there was more of the Lily Tomlin interview, she's sucha rare genius, her interview spots are like no one elses.

Thanks for this little goodie. These were wonderful times. Funny how a TV show and celebrities can bring back so many fond memories. Maybe that’s why they get paid so much; their art gives long after they’re gone.

I can only equal similar sentiments regarding early home video tapings of these programs. Very likely the only one of this particular program in existence...the rarity of any other home tapings of this particular program possibly extinct. Without this copy this particular program would be gone forever. Yes...a big THANKS!

This apparently represents two episodes: The first is apparently from September 4th, 1970--which is supported by the announcer promo for "Carol Channing's Mad English Tea Party" (on September 9th), around 16:20. The second is apparently from February 17th, 1971.

NBC-Burbank's Victor Bozeman plugs the Channing special, as well as the 1970 season premiere of the "John McKay Show", featuring USC's then-head football coach and a filmed highlight reel, a Sunday TV staple in the days when the NCAA would limit live football telecasts until the Supreme Court forced it wide open in 1984.

Limbaugh is right. Yes, Carson was personally liberal but his late night show was a place where everyone gathered to simply laugh and be entertained. Carson went after both Republicans and Democrats in his monologues but it was always done in good fun without the hate and vitriol we see with ALL the late night hosts today. Carson was all class compared to today's virtue signaling hypocrite hosts.

Back when Carson was splitting his time between NBC-Burbank, where he would eventually do the "Tonight Show" full-time until retiring in 1992, and Studio 6B in New York, where Jimmy Fallon stars in the current "Tonight Show".

Not all full-time - he split his time between New York and Burbank as late as May 1973, one year to the month after he moved out West.

Complete or incomplete, this is rare Johnny right here!!! Almost all pre-1972 Tonight Show episodes were taped over by NBC. Johnny found out about this and after moving the show to Burbank, he ordered all episodes up to that point to be saved.

Superb! The skit with Ed and Johnny at the beginning was a riot. Loved that line about Fire Island. That was so funny and not politically correct of course. That’s what made it funny. Great seeing the original commercials too. The ones on now are so darn depressing. Not a fan of Jerry Lewis. I always found him annoying as I did Joan Rivers but that’s just me. Thanks so much for sharing this rare footage with us 😎

Thanks for sharing this. Really enjoyed the Zsa Zsa appearance, and later, Jack Benny with David Steinberg (which felt a little like the passing of a torch). It's interesting to see how the celebrities/comedians would interact with the audience back then. Not that much now.

Wow...Jerry was not in a good mood during this show. He really seems irritated most of the time when Johnny is trying to set up a joke. Have to say it was very painful to watch, don't think I ever caught this particular show back then, but it seems like neither one of them want to be there!
@Katiedid933 жыл бұрын
Lol Jerry does well with bickering jokes and playing dumb. I don’t think his humor translates well with Johnny. Johnny just comes off annoyed, and Jerry comes off as petulant and petty. He did a lot of the same type material with Sammy Davis, Dean Martin, and Don Rickles. His humor is reactionary similar to Johnny Carson. Their chemistry seems bad.

But Carson had him guest host many many times so he must have been okay with him overall.

It was often hinted or just said outright that Johnny Carson never invited Ed McMahon into his home for dinner even once. I recall Ed was asked about that rumor, and he denied it. But I believe it. I used to see Zsa Zsa more often on Merv Griffin's show, long after she wasn't in so much demand. When Merv had his same-sex legal troubles, Zsa Zsa was asked about it by a reporter, and was pretty cold-hearted. "Look at him, he isn't built for any kind of sex."
@AmericasChoice4 жыл бұрын
Wrong. Johnny and Ed socialized a lot in the early days. It wasn't until the early 80's that they had a falling out.
@akrenwinkle4 жыл бұрын
@@AmericasChoice You can twist my words all you want; I don't GAF. I thoroughly believe McMahon never set foot Chez Carson as a dinner guest, which is not the same as saying they didn't go out getting plastered sometimes.
