My first symptom was waking up in a panic attack. That was not something my doctor considered a symptom so it took almost two years to be diagnosed while I was having panic attacks 5-6 nights a week and getting very little real sleep. It was impacting my whole life. So thankful I was finally diagnosed. Immediate relief. Don’t overlook this possibility if you have something like this.

I'm going thru this right now ....i can't sleep for over a month and most telling me its panic attacks ...sleeping pills not helping me ...im suffering so much I can't function...any tips for me till I get a sleep study?

Its Me Hi, I’m sorry I really don’t. I ended up on an prescription med that helped me sleep. Even with the sleep study the doctor said I didn’t actually stop breathing, but just had very shallow breathing. He wasn’t sure the CPAP was the answer, but it was. Apparently, my brain feels that shallow breathing is not okay and works hard to wake me up when that happens. I’m so sorry you're going through this, but at least for me I’ve been using the CPAP for six years now and I’ve never had another panic attack. I wish the same for you.

Facial Skeletal developement also plays a major major role. This is highly unknown, except by people that are focusing their studies in this area. Lack of breast feeding, lack of eating solid foods when facial structures are growing/developing causes a “long face”. The jaw grows in a down and forward direction in these people (versus the more desirable horizontal growth). Horizontal jaw growth also creates more attractive individuals like square-jawed individuals, like brad pit, and Angelina Jolie. This steep jaw angle growth in “long-faced” people places the tongue much closer to the back of the throat. Making it much easier for the tongue to drop back and obstruct the airway. With the tongue in a posterior position, it’s not sitting forward as it should be, which allows the palate to narrow, and the nasal airway to narrow. Nasal breathing thus can’t take place as easy. Mouth breathing thus has to occur to compensate. Mouth breathing causes the jaw to again drop open, and causes the tongue to easily occlude the airway. I could go on and on. But I want to point out that “skeletal growth” plays THE MOST important role in sleep apnea. (PS: I’m a dentist)

I have had mild insomnia for years -- waking up around Four am on many mornings. I know that this is an old video, but I have to comment. I recently did a home sleep study, and was diagnosed with severe apnea. Then went to the VA hospital to sleep over night so they could set me up with a machine. Thanks so much for this video. Not one person from the VA have even attempted to explain what I have, or why this is the right treatment for me. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe when I go back to get the machine, they'll explain everything to me. Also while trying to fall asleep, I'll suddenly jolt feeling like I stopped breathing, hope the machine helps with this.

i did a sleep study finally last month, i was told i had 122 apneas in one hour. i recieved a phillips dreamstation 2 w/ a nasal mask, nasal pillow mask and the full face mask in case i am stuffy and cant use the nasal one. it has a humidifier which i love and the heated tubing. i find it very comfortable to use, much more than what people said on reddit when i joined that subreddit. i will say if you wake up during the night to it at a 20 from the ramp gradually going up to what you need, holy smokes, thats like sticking your head out of a car window going 100 down a freeway. the face mask makes my cheeks blow back thats how strong the air is, its insane. i am overweight, i had to have the sleep study done to get approval for my gastric bypass in july. so i have a pulmonologist now, and when i was diagnosed, so many things make sense now. i fall asleep sitting up, in movie theatres, i have dozed off for a second driving once. i wake up with a headache almost everyday of my freaking life. i am always tired, miserable, foggy. Since having the cpap machine, i feel like an entirely different person. If you think you have apnea, or suspect even a tiny bit, get the study, if you need a cpap, don't dick around, DO IT. it will change your life.

It's definitely not just obese people that are affected. I'm only five foot one and 130 lbs, but I'm sure this is what I'm suffering from as well. I hope to have a sleep study done soon because not breathing is so such a terrible experience!

I didn't think I had sleep apnea because of I workout three times a week and was overweight but I realized over the years that the reason I was waking up screaming in a panic need to walk outside was that not from bad dreams felt like i was about to die or anxiety but from obstructive sleep apnea

I keep waking in the night with a start because I can’t breath. I also get night terrors. I’m 55 and am post menopausal, this last two months it’s gotten worse. I’m waking three times every night now. I’m about 56 pounds over weight. I’ve noticed that even though I can breathe through my nose I feel like I’m blocked behind my nose and top of my throat. I’m not sleeping at all now 😒. Love your voice, it’s so relaxing and you explained this so well 😘

Try earthing, go DIY a grounding mat, pillow or sheet to use at home. Earthing is good for almost all health problems including sleep apnea.

1) I have no relatives with this 2) I do have allergies and I"m on - advair, singulair, albutoral, flucinase. and even Dupixent 3) I am a total nose breather but it seems the second I lay down on my left side (best side) I feel like I'm suffocating. 4) I read Tess Grahm's book on breathing and I'm doing everything right. 5) My consistent problem seem to be that in the early morning I develop phlem in my throat just enough to cause my throat to "stick" 6) I often use a dreammachine cpap (with humidifier) but it dries my throat out and again my throat gets locked and I've come to hate cpap 7) It gives me very bad repetitive nightmares like once a minute when I try to get back to sleep.. like I'm drowning or putting things away that keep falling back down 8) Hate it !

I didn't know the cause of waking up in the middle of the night, feeling almost suffocated, with no breathing at all - untill I have seen this clip that explains clearly 'sleep Apnea' which I believe is similar to my symptoms. My sister has also developed this same problem of waking up in the middle of the night having difficulty to breathe. All doctors we both seen couldn't figure out our problem and mostly related it asthma, cardiovascular problem or unknown factors.

Additional risk factor: Poorly developed jaws such as found in most people with malocclusion (crooked teeth). Also people with such jaw structure that had orthodontics that retracted the anterior teeth as part of the treatment (thus further restricting tongue space).

Retruded / set back jaws are almost always the reason for sleep apnea (root cause that is) ofcourse being overweight may worsen the problem. You'll never find anyone who has good cheekbones (forward jaw) that has sleep apnea.

Everyone's tongue is roughly the same size in length, however some people have forward positioned jaws so when their jaws relax in sleep in doesn't go into their airway. Also the reason people with poorly developed jaws don't have breathing problems in the day time (regarding airway) is because they're conpensated the bad jaw position by tilting their heads forward to open the airway

. I have "woken up" into a state of sleep paralysis numerous times. Mentally conscious but, not being able to breathe through my nose (stuffy nose + deviated septum) and not being able to change to a more comfortable position or even open my mouth to breathe. I have read multiple descriptions of feeling a weight over ones chest. I haven't felt that, rather just an inability to move coupled with slow suffocation. During this time I'm still able to control breathing e.g. trying to breathe harder through a stuffy nose. This usually leads to 5-10 minutes of excruciating struggle to live (trying to breathe harder and move my body while also contemplating the fact I'm so close to death) after which, I am able to actually wake up and regain control of my body. I am sleeping on my stomach during most of these episodes. Has anyone experienced something like this? Any tips or tricks to avoid horrible suffering and suffocation during sleep paralysis?

My father has been rattling the windows on the house for 40 years with his snoring. He was diagnosed with OSA and prescribed THE CPAP. He has never worn it and snores like a bear. His 3rd wife sleeps in another room or kicks him out into the living room. I have been waking up myself making a roaring sound. My girlfriend has complained about it and recommended a sleep study.

I’m tall and skinny but I was in an accident June 2020 that had displaced my spine and hips making my upper spine pinch my brain stem. I’ve been well now no one else was hurt as bad or worse than me. But if I’m a little out of place I can’t breath while I’m falling asleep and I feel trapped for like 2 minutes and I pretty much need to sleep on my back because of my spine but when I sleep on my side I never have a problem breathing.

I don't really even know what sleep is pretty much. Haven't had good, consistent sleep since childhood, which affect my schooling. I remember being like a zombie as a kid. I am trying to do some tongue and throat exercises and just ordered a wedge pillow. I will look into CPAP. I need sleep. I have lost a lot of weight, but it hasn't helped too much. I try to avoid high histamine foods to reduce rhinitis.

Very Good explanation. Just like to question, breathing being so important, why does the brain allow the tongue/muscles to relax causing reduction in the airway ? For e.g the heart continues to beat constantly even in sleep.

NSD India in reality tongue is the only muscle which doesn’t relax when we go to sleep. However, when the muscle gets weaker (causes might be smoking, alcohol, age, fat storage) then tongue starts to relax, which is a huge problem. Hence it’s called sleep apnea 🤷♂️

I have a different issue. I snore so bad my uvula swells. I can breathe in fine but it blocks me from breathing out. Apparently 180 times per hour on average. Sleep docs wanted me to stay in their facility until my cpap came in because it was so bad.

I have been diagnosed with severe OSA (44 x per hr with O2 sat 71%) and am starting CPAP. I have had bilateral hip replacements and other joint surgeries and cannot sleep on my right side. I start out on my left side but during sleep become supine. Would a bed where you can raise the head of the bed (such as a Sleep Number bed) reduce apneic events while lying on my back with the head at 30 degrees or more? Thank you.

There are estrogen receptors in the soft palate. That is why women have higher risk of OSA after menopause.

Sill couldn't get the physiopathology of this condition clearly, here I have a question if you could answer, would help us to understand the exact cause: The physiopathology if sleep apnea is most likely related to A. Excessive oropharyngeal muscular Tonus during sleep B. Central nervous system respiratory depression C. Obstruction in lower airways D. A severe Angle class III malocclusion

For sleep events in an hour? My insurance cut off point is 20 an hour when I was tested I had 24 one of them included holding my breath for 3 minutes and 35 seconds yikes I do use the machine now though not as often as I should I am trying my best I feel one day it might kill me otherwise if I don't get a handle on this it is causing increase in my red blood cells so my blood now loosing my body and a thicker manner trying to compensate for the fact that I keep holding my breath
