OC animation/PMV - Vargsången

Here's one final lore hint/setup before I tackle the project that'll reveal the demise of Smokeveil, Sootspot, Coalclaw & Shadowfern.
The first, traditionally drawn half, features Smokeveil and her son Ashkit, as she sings him a lullaby. It was a biiig challenge drawing such large and detailed bg illustrations but a very fun and different workflow!
The second half is my attempt at visualsizing one of Crowsong's many prophetic nightmare/dreams. I wanted to incorporate some more nordic symbolism and I'm especially proud of the last 2 shots! Also congrats to those who guessed the animal correctly....

This song I've grown up with and I really love. I think few swedish songs fit my projects but our lullabies I do enjoy using lots. There were also so many versions of this song that I adore so I had to implement several!

If I'm remembering correctly, wolves and ravens have a very symbiotic relationship. Makes me think that if a wolf killed them all, it might've been sent by corvids as some kind of warning.

Yeah, and you’d think as much as Raveneye treated every sign from Starclan as gospel, he would have recognized the warning given by the corvids. Alas, he resented his own daughter more than he cared about the corvids’ warnings.

​@@asleepyb0i400 I felt there was some sort of Greek tragedy going on with Raveneye and attitude towards his clan. Raveneye doesn't believe the power of corvids until he kills his dad which makes him believe the power and importance of corvids. In pursuit of what is best for the clan and his beliefs, he neglected his daughter which is closest to corvids and starclan (if she is the only one receiving prophecy except for Shadowfern). He literally gave ultimatum to Crowsong when he neglected her, pinned her to all the clanmates and despised her. In conclusion, Raveneye is a failure, in pursuit of what is right, he allows things to fester until it destroys him and his clan. A literally a Greek tragedy, thank you for listening to my ted talk and sorry for Raveneye analysis.

I love the ironic tragedy of how Smokeveil promises little Ashkit that the wolf won’t take him, and her dying to protect him from said wolf…. Only for Crowsong, the one who saw the wolf coming in the first place, to be the one to kill him.

I think it’s interesting at the start of the nightmare, Crowsong shifts into the actual wolf in the animation. Wonder if she feels some guilt at not being able to stop the attack and therefore being “responsible” for it. Edit: Just realized it could also be ironic, with the song being sung to Ashkit promising that he won’t be taken by the wolf, only for Crowsong to kill him.

Sorry for the second comment, but I just realized something… As Smokeveil sings to Ashkit, she sings: _“You wolf, you wolf, do not come here._ _My child you’ll never take.”_ The very next shot shows Crowsong’s dream of her prophecy, where she “transforms” into a wolf… Ashkit was Crowsong’s first victim.

Hauntingly beautiful. The animation goes REALLY WELL with the audio. The shapeshifting is so smoothly done/transitioned well. The wolf imagery…. Along with Ashkit’s mother if I’m not mistaken, makes me believe even more that a wolf took the lives of the four who died. Excited to see where the story goes! Awesome work as usual!

Man…the traditional art is so gorgeous! And that portrayal of Crowsong’s prophetic dreams really sells the feelings of panic and confusion; no wonder she wakes up in fear so often like in the LBT part or the Darkside meme.

This look so stunning!!! I love the switch between traditional more slideshow esk pictures and then the black and white, yet still sketchy animation. The calm voice singing is just, everything is so good and flows so well together. Not to mention the symbolism regarding Crowsong's story and, if I remember correctly, also the actual event of a wolf roaming the corvidclan territory at one point and no one listeing to crowsong. You did amazing!

Okay guys THIS IS PHENOMENAL. Firstly, we need to talk about the work that was out in every freaking frame. Lou, I am so damn proud of you. I bet it took hours on end to draw the traditional pieces so neatly, put them together and ESPECIALLY making this gorgeous animation which has INSANE camera angles. Not to mention just how fluid it is!! Now, even though I don't understand why Louixie used some of the nordic symbols, maybe because some of them are only a Chekhov's gun and foreshadowing for now, but I do have some thoughts on what I saw and what I could find. The symbol on 0:56 is called The Helm Of Awe and symbolises protection from harm, specifically what you could find on warrior's armour and on nordic pictures of dragons. There is a lot of snowflakes throughout the whole animation, and considering that norse people believed in fate and that every one of us has their own duty, it might be true that long before the events with Crowsong occured she was destined to become the greatest protector of her clan, may it be by fighting for it or becoming a medicine cat. That actually explains why she has these prophetic dreams from Starclan in the first place - to warn her clan of any upcoming danger, really similar to visions that Goosefeather from the original books had. The symbol on 0:58 is called The Web Of Wyrd, and it symbolizes the past, the present and the future, and also the inevitable fate. That's why I mentioned it earlier. The nine interlocking lines are also there for a purpose - it was a number that represents completeness and wholeness, the perfect number, because it contained three pairs of numerals, which represented the perfect balance between the elements of sky, water and earth. The symbol on 1:10 I assume is the one called Othala, or The Odal Rune - one of the ancient nordic alphabetic symbols which represents inheritance, determination, tradition snd strong connection with family. I THINK It is used here on purpose because in one of them there is a cub, a child, and it also pictures it's innocence and deep bond with it's family. And the last one on 1:16 is probably intended to be the crow's tracks originally, but also can be interpreted as Algiz, a nordic alphabet symbol once again, which means protection also. Hope this helped to understand this stunning AMV more!! Let me know if you find something else in the comments!

First of all, the first half with the pencil aesthetic is SO cozy! I love it! But, most importantly, holy shit the second half is so good! It has this amazing kinesthetic feel to it despite just being lines in various directions. And it really captures that vague kinda-there-but-not feeling real dreams have. I’d honestly never really seen a good visual for how dreams _feel_ until now. I’m legitimately giddy over this!

I honestly think this has something to do with a connection with crowsong, connecting with the shots in this video and other videos with the demise for someveil, SootSpot, coalclaw & shadowfern, I think that Crowsong ( as the messenger ) took notice of the wolfs, but the others couldn’t listen, following a sudden demise of the four due to wolfs, if what I’m guessing. What I love most is how the art direction completes itself so well with the story covered This makes feel in an extremely beautiful way, love all the symbolism, references and culture deposited with affection in this pmv. The delicacy and richness of details in traditional art are perfect tools for telling a story, the more rustic style reminds me of children’s books that are perfectly "married" to the first part, where Smokeveil sings a lullaby to Ashkit. The entire trip made with CSP with digital animation and not so clear traces are also perfectly combined with the dream world, having Crowsong received the warning of deaths through these; It makes me feel like the pages of a children’s storybook, in a darker approach, but perfectly using aesthetics to express a message. I venture to say that it is one of the most beautiful works ever made by you, praise, not for the wealth of graphics, details, painting, but for the way of telling a story so tragic but so beautiful, full of care, symbolism and something that touches deeply in the soul. I study animation design, and I can say with certainty and opinion that the storytelling and art used for this combined on a molecular level of perfection, care and affection. Congratulations, I’m still looking forward to future projects.

Oh this is gorgeous! ❤ The sketch to the 0:43 vision, prophetic feel of Crowsong's vision! The music choices were perfect! When I heard the lullaby in this, I got reminded that I have heard of this lullaby about a mother fighting a wolf that wanted to take her child ❤😢 Aww Ashkit... If only the Clan took Crowsong's words seriously, then maybe some of them would have survived! Cassandra's Truth indeed! I like to think that Crowsong's visions tend to be different, that they vary depending on the severity of the vision or the events about to come. Like the one in Is It Cold Outside, giving her an idea of how it would show up and how it was gonna play out, and this is the one that warned her way before about the wolf coming. May I say, CorvidClan is one of the most twisted yet unique fan clans I have ever had the pleasure of watching grow! It's beautiful how you added your culture in it too, reflecting the place they're in!

Theory 1: Crow was sent by CorvidClan's ancestors to guide them through many hard times ahead, but when CorvidClan didn't listen to Crow's warnings, she stopped hearing the voices of StarClan and instead heard the voices of cats in the Dark Forest who gave her the prophecy of the dark water. Thus leading to where we are now with Crow in the dark forest. Theory 2: Crow was sent as a warning to CorvidClan to prevent them from following a dark path that would lead them to destruction. Crow was supposed to be their guiding light and symbol of hope, but when CorvidClan failed to listen, StarClan charged her with their destruction.

IVE BEEN SO EXCITED TO SEE THIS FULL THING OMGGG You did such a good job portraying the bits and pieces Crowsong was shown!! Enough to tell what's going to happen, but just too little to properly string the event together into a coherent prediction. If that's how her dreams are, it definitely makes sense why nobody chose to believe her when she tried to warn them. It could be dismissed as a blurry nightmare if you really didn't want to believe it was a vision.

I know this is quite obvious but I love how the wolf is portrayed during the entire video. It could kind of be compared to the saying, "A wolf in sheep's clothing." But the meaning be different. Like the wolf is raised by a sheep, but is also trying to become like the sheep but the sheep don't accept the wolf no matter how hard the wolf tries. So the wolf turns on them out of anger. I hope that made sense lol. I love how the style makes the story stand out in a way. I can't think of a word that would describe how it stands out to me.

This is one of, if not the most; fluid, detailed, and dynamic animations I have ever seen The stylization in itself is so unique, but the storytelling and visuals make it even better, it just ties together so well with everything else!

this is incredibly BEAUTIFUL. The mystery of the song and the switch to the more intense version gave me chills! I adore how it starts out with the traditionally drawn illustrations and then transforms into the dark and intense animation!! I love the usage of messy lines to fit with the fast movement especially. God, there’s so many things I love about this animation, I hope I can become as skilled as you one day

The excessive use of both runes and Icelandic magickal staves really brings me joy PS i dont know if it was intentional but using the rune Wyrd aka Oden’s rune then transitioning to a raven/crow which reminds me of Hugin and Munin, Oden’s two ravens was clean as heck ❤❤❤❤
