A terrific explanation of how ocarinas make sound. Thank you Chris, I particularly like the model of the voicing!

Give your ocarina a voicing. Pitches love voicings.

I recently started to play the Ocarina and since I've got physics in school, where we learned how strings vibrate to make a sound or long tubes like recorders basically do the same thing, I wondered how an Ocarina is able to make a sound and really was completely confused the last few days. Finally you answered my question and my brain can function normally again from now on. xD

Thank you! I'm a flute player and also a tin whistle player. I picked up an ocarina on an impulse at GenCon this year (2023) and I've always been curious how the pitches are achieved. Hopefully this will partially solve that mystery!

I had just 3D printed an ocarina that didn't work. This was exactly what I needed to spot an internal support that I had missed and now it's perfectly-OK-ish (It's just PLA using FDM, so OK-ish is about what I expected; I'm happy :D)

Wow. great to hear and I had always wanted to try one. If you can share any links for models/input STL files, will be greatful. Also, have you posted anywhere on the 3D print outcom. will be happy to watch and learn.

@@mamaslostsoul Hey, I got mine from Thingiverse; www.thingiverse.com/thing:2755765 In your slicing software, make sure it's oriented as in the second picture (with the thin end pointing up) and that you have only external supports on unless you want to, like me, pick internal supports out with pliers etc and the possibility that something stays behind and messes it up further.

Interesting info, several months ago I made one of these without knowing much about what or why or how they make sound, I wanted a really deep sound and made one of cedar with probably a pint and a half size chamber, I don't know what went wrong or if something wasnt lined up right, or maybe the chamber was too big.. I don't know, I followed directions on Instructable, and I even used my endmill to make an ultra precise mouth section, but I got really discouraged after a LOT of wood work and no sound. After watching this I may try it again slightly smaller and just deal with having a higher pitched sound. But i would LOVE to have a really low note Ocarina, I think it would just sound enchanting. This has given me a bit of motivation to try again seeing how it should function

I couldn’t make the mouth piece, but I did make a new instrument. I put a bassoon double reed at what would be the mouth piece. It sounds like a kazoo, but with a lot more versatility.

Alright, I know this might seem like a silly question but, what clay do you use specifically? I tried looking around and I couldn't figure out what clay I should use.

Red clay works, don't use sculpy, it gets super flimsy if you work it to much

Labium is Latin for lip, so "labium lip" is redundant.
