In this demo OCC instructor Alan Paulson is showing how to make a plaster mold for mass producing ceramic pieces. The demo shows a mold being made for a 6"x6" tile, but this technique has limitless uses.

Great video most important thing i like about this and learned from it. Is layer you buckets with plastic so you don't have to clean them out quickly/right after alot less mess/saves the buckets. Also i like the metal brackets if they are as good as using wood working clamps that would save the need for them and make the resizing of the mold boxes much quicker in setup time.

Very nice tutorial on a one part plaster mold! There is one thing I realized towards the end that could be added! Adding a release agent (like murphy soap) before pouring the plaster would make the terracotta piece dislodge almost completely after hardening! Then, you wouldn't have to risk chipping or cutting into the plaster while digging out the clay piece! ^^

If you get a bottle of Windex, and Duff half of it out, adding purified water to the top of the bottle. Shake it well and then just give it a light Spritz over your mold, this will prevent bubbles. But thank you for this video I am saving it for future moles that I will make.

+Ediel Dominguez a simple tip you are pouring the plaster to early. Wait till when you pass your finger through the plaster and it starts to leave a trench in the plaster this is when you pour the plaster. This will stop nearly all the leakage problems. It's a shame you live in another country I could teach yo so much. A lot of mould making secrets are kept within the trade. I live in Australia and learnt a lot about mould making from a mould maker that worked in potteries in Sydney before ww2.

if you take a dried tile and brush a layer of wood polish before pouring the plaster it will not stick with the tile and come out very easily without damaging the mould and you will also save your master piece. we are doing this for almost 15 years.

That's about the lumpiest blob of plaster mix I've ever seen. Don't do that folks, mix the plaster well and thoroughly, especially if you are going to carve the plaster. If you don't you are risking that the plaster is not cooked correctly in some areas and once you start carving you may experience chunks of plaster breaking off and ruining your work. I use a plastic bucket and a hand mixer bit that attaches to my hand drill. You can get one of those at any paint store or hardware store. If you use low quality plastic buckets and you are using them continuously for mixing plaster you will only get a limited amount of use from them as the heating of plaster will deteriorate the plastic bucket. Invest in a good quality bucket and you can get many uses on them. The instructor here is correct when he states to not dump the liquid plaster in any drain, as in time the plaster will clog your drainage pipes and you are going to pay quite a bit to get those replaced. Just let the leftover plaster dry on its own inside your bucket and toss the dry pieces into your trash bin.

thank you so much this was clear and easy to follow. how do you figure amount of water at the start to get the right amount of plaster to fill your mold?
@rook5438 жыл бұрын
+Brigitta Dixon My teacher used this "mountain" method which I never understood. The consistency you are going for is like pudding or pancake batter. I have been told that when you can draw a line on the top and it does not immediately fill, it's ready to pour. But you need to work quickly, as once its in the water and you start mixing, it will start hardening. Not IMMEDIATELY but fast enough where you wont want to dawdle.

Hi Russ, isn't is necessary to brush the clay with some oil in order the plaster don't glue in it ? I considere making a plaster mold of an aluminum piece, does the plaster attack aluminum/ Thanks for posting,oscar
@rook5439 жыл бұрын
Nope. You are not going to let the clay dry. Frankly, you will be destroying your original. Once the plaster is hard, just pull the clay out, clean up the mold, and you are good to go. Frankly I would wait a couple days until the plaster is rock-hard before using it. Some DO use vegetable oil spray if it's needed when running production pieces with the mold though.
@rook5439 жыл бұрын
I have no idea how the plaster would react to aluminum. Never tried it. Hot water WILL eventually break down the plaster of you get some pieces of plaster caked on it. What will you be making your pieces with once you have a mold? Depending on what, you may consider using silicon or some other material.

So, you don't have to put the piece in the kiln before making the mold?
@dethcreeper698 жыл бұрын
No need to kiln the piece. The wet clay is used for the mould because it's easier to remove once the plaster has set. It is then the plaster you make the copies from and you reuse the clay for your next project. Hope that helps

Could a plaster mold be used for a poly resin casting?
@rook5438 жыл бұрын
sure. be sure to use a release agent and make sure you eliminate any undercuts before using the mold (edges that you would have to get your cast piece out from under)
@rook5437 жыл бұрын
***** when I use it, I didn't use one and it worked fine. But a light spray of vegetable oil would work as well. I never used vase line but I don't think it would be a problem, unless using a petroleum based clay like possibly some of the home baked poly clays. Even then I don't know if it would be bad.

Hi. I need help with a question. I live in mexico and cant seem to find gypsium.powder to make molds. I would like to make slip molds, i understand that plaster is ideal with a gypsium mold being that the gypsium retains the water from the plaster hence creating the slip effect. Unfortunatly down here i cant find gypsium, my question, can i use stone lime powder to make the outer mold? I do have acces to plaster. Or could i make the outer mold from.plaster and the slip cast from.plaster also? I would appreciate a response ty.

I've been making ceramic molds for 25 years now. Plastic molds as well. There is so much in this video that he is doing wrong. First, measure your plaster. This is clumpy and much too thick. Second, never pour plaster directly over your model unless you use a release. And do not use anything like Vaseline. A great release spray is Murphy's Oil Soap mixture of half water and half soap. Put mixture in a plastic spray bottle. And from a distance lightly mist your model Use a cool blow dryer to get rid of any air bubbles. Plaster should be mixed by hand 1 part cold water to 1.5 parts of plaster. Sift plaster into water. Never the other way around. Let plaster sit for up to 5 min undisturbed so plaster will absorb all the water. Use a paint stick to stir mixture for at least 3 minutes. Pour plaster over model slowly from the lowest point. Let plaster set. When plaster reaches maximum heat, remove your model gently. Hope this helps. Note: Use only #1 pottery plaster!

how can we make a wooden mold form?
@rook5438 жыл бұрын
+Linda Gordon These ones are made with 1" x 6" boards. On the end of each one you screw an "L-bracket" so it can hook onto the next sine. It noes not need to hook over perfectly, but you want it without TO much wiggle room. Each side hooks onto the next at a 90 degree angle. This lets you use longer board and you can slide and size the mold form to your piece. As for keeping the clay from leaking out, when you are going to pour your plaster, you use clay on the corners and where the board touch the table and form corners to keep plaster from leaking.
