Chris takes a quick look at this 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Pro Switch with 2 SFP Ports from NETGEAR. It is an older model, but is it still relevant today?
This unit is version 2 (v2) and there is a v3 available. This model is also available in a 24 port configuration. This unit was manufactured in 2012 and is fanless.

I prefer using dac cables for uplink if it's in the same rack, easier to work with.

Thanks for the review. Looks like a deal at $50. My router has only one ethernet port. I want to connect two separate computers, which are a long way away from each other. Can I simply connect this switch to my router, then connect two separate ethernet cables from the switch to my two separate computers - without having to go through the switch configuration process? Will it do that "out of the box" or will I need to run the software that comes with it? I have macbooks and I don't think the software runs on a mac. Plus I really don't want to have to play around with it, just plug and play if that works.

Well, short answer, yes it would work. But it sounds like for your application that a five port for an eight port switch would be fine. They would be much less bulky and take up less space. And you can get them for around $15.
