I’ve seen pages saying OT’s and PTS’s will be required to have a doctorate in a few years instead of masters. Is this true? Why did you choose to get your masters as opposed to your doctorate? Cheaper?? Less schooling??

Hi! Yes, so PTs I believe are doing their DPT as of now. On the other hand, OTs still are not required to have a Doctorate and it hasn't been fully approved by AOTA. Professionals have told me they don't know when that will be because it is a constantly debated topic. I didn't have a super big interest in completing my OTD right away, and I really wanted to pursue my degree at a public school given cost and even location. SJSU at the time did not have an OTD, so it made financial sense to attend for my Masters. This semester their OTD is starting which is great because it is the only public school in CA that will offer an OTD! So for me the benefits of a Masters were the significant cost difference compared to the relevant pay scale, time in school, and my own interest.

How long is your OT program? You said fieldwork is 2 years away but you are in grad school, just confused. Currently I am in an OT program and I'll be doing my first level II A in a year which is a 6 month fieldwork. I've been going to school since 2020 and I am still on undergraduate. I'll be in my graduate portion of the program by Fall 2023.

@Sammi Nicole Thank you for replying I am just confused as I didn't know you could get your OT degree within 2 years I thought it had to be 5 years...? Sorry for he dumb question lol.

It’s not a dumb question! Maybe it’s because I did my undergraduate degree already for 4 years and now this is graduate school. Is your program in the US?

@Sammi Nicole oh that makes sense! No I am in the US I did 2 years of undergraduate with an OT track so I took classes for the program requirements!
