This video makes me feel pretty good about myself. I had a sudden onslaught of intrusive thoughts last week, after a while of being relatively symptom-free. I responded by saying "okay, that's nice, moving on," and this week the thoughts have faded substantially. Thank you for being one of the main people who taught me how to do that back when my OCD was severe.

Summary for ADHD folks - [00:00] 🤯 Intrusive Thoughts Rely on Your Reaction - Intrusive thoughts gain power from your reactions. - They're like uninvited guests at a picnic, unexpected and awkward. - Reacting to them gives them validity and importance. - [01:10] 🧠 You Control Your Response to Thoughts - You have the power to decide how to respond to intrusive thoughts. - Treating them as non-threats diminishes their power. - Your brain adapts to how you respond, learning what's important. - [02:03] 🌟 The Power of Assigning Value - The value of thoughts and trends is determined by how we perceive them. - Styles and perceptions change over time, demonstrating our power to assign value. - Intrusive thoughts can be rendered meaningless bytreating them as such. - [03:25] 🎭 Reducing the Impact of Intrusive Thoughts - Treating intrusive thoughts as unimportant can diminish their impact. - Acting indifferent to these thoughts retrains the brain to focus on what truly matters. - Your response to thoughts is a choice, and you have control over it. - [04:20]⚔ Empowering Yourself Against OCD - Thoughts only have power if you give them power. - Focusing on life and how you respond to OCD can be empowering. - The video encourages the viewer to explore further resources for managing OCD.

I have contamination ocd, and I’ve been advised by my therapist to sit with the anxiety and delay responding to it, and eventually not respond to it at all. You’ll suffer through it (that clinging fear and tension in your body and mind…like an addicted person would want to heal) but every time you do it, it gets easier and the intrusive thought becomes less important and real and more funny 😂…I want to become the person who didn’t have ocd at all. I haven't done ERP (yet), but I've done DBT. One of the best things I learned there that's helping with OCD is extending the pause between feeling (anxiety) and reaction (compulsion). It's hard, definitely, but I try to remember to live in those pauses more because that's when I have the power to decide what I'm going to do/how I'm going to react.

The way you know the content/theme "obsession" is false is that it can change theme, and the previous theme doesn't bug you anymore because it's now transferred it's focus onto something new... So attacking the content with compulsions doesn't really solve the underlying problem which is OCD. Also it's not the thoughts themselves that are the problem it's the way you feel about them... If you didn't care then ocd wouldn't exist... That's why ocd targets what you deem most important by attacking it with what you deem to be the worst case scenario
@al_5655

I had exactly the same experience that you describe - the content changes. The underlying issue is the same - it just manifests in different ways as you "problem-solve" each surface-level symptom.

I won't respond to it by acknowledging it and giving it a name. I call mine the protector..I make sure I remind myself that it's trying to protect me even if those things aren't real. It gives me the assurance that I am normal, I can then let it go and sometimes I even talk to myself outloud. I can verbalize it and it helps to move the thoughts in and out. What do you do if you say "eh, whatever", it works, and then you get a big physical nerve jolt up your spine? And this happens almost throughout the day. Intrusion, ignoring/neglect, physical shiver up the spine, repeat. I believe some types of OCD are 95% neurological and need chemical or electrical intervention to improve life quality. I've spent weeks just physically shaking off these shivers every 5-10 seconds. It's deeper, there's a violent undercurrent of energy, a bubbling of nervous energy which simply bursts out to the surface as an intrusive thought. Something deep in Central Nervous System. What seems to work is SSRIs and supplements (e.g. in India, Neurobion Forte is a commonly prescribed supplement) Apparently Magnesium supplements work for some people.

Hi, if possible I would appreciate if you could make a video about a type of OCD I have right now that I have not heard anyone else talk about. I am afraid of mentally associating bad things I am afraid of with good things which I care about. Its like mental contamination, but the huge issue is that I feel like the fear actually can easily come true since its a mental association and can happen very easily. So its like the OCD fear can easily come true in my case which is what these OCD recovery coaches like you say will not happen. Usually when people with OCD have a fear they are exposed to in ERP they can easily see over time that the fear has not come true because its often a physical reality not a mental fear. I guess if I stop caring about external things so much I won't care about what thoughts I get and the associations will not happen or weaken. But I never heard of anyone else have this fear and so I feel like the odd one out.

My thoughts are all built around my body sensations. I’m suffering immensely right now. My therapist actually introduced me to your videos. She says my thoughts on health and physical sensations have become obsessive. So, this would be handled the same right?

But what about when you have the thoughts as your semi conscious when waking up and the anxiety has started before you’re awake?

I've been struggling with relationship OCD, which manifests as an overwhelming need to respond to my friend's messages immediately, fearing that if I don't, they'll start to dislike me. This constant pressure to reply instantly has been taking a toll on my mental well-being. What strategies can I use to cope with this anxiety and intrusive thoughts? Additionally, I worry about the possibility of my friend developing similar relationship OCD tendencies if I don't respond promptly. How can I address this fear and create healthier communication boundaries without jeopardizing our friendship.
