Thankyou so much for this- just the incentive and inspiration for me to work through this masterpiece again. Just wondering if you have any other JB music such as Valley or Under an Indian Sky?☮❤🎸🎶

Amazing. Had some difficulties on the strumming pattern learning from ear. This cleared it right up. Thanks for your hard work 🎉! Just curious how long it took you to tab? I’m on year 3 of playing it casually 😅
@mikepalethorpe6 ай бұрын
It was a long time in the making! Started messing around with the original album version a few decades ago. Then I finally saw footage of him playing it a few years after and that helped refine my original tab of the album version, which was the original one I tabbed. Then when it came to the KZbin studio version I at least had all the licks in my fingers and just had to figure the tapping and write it all down. The album version is still my favourite though.

Hey Mike, I have been practicing Ocean for years, it has been a journey! :) I'm having trouble understanding the timing of the outro (bars 80 to 84) where you indicate the slides. What are you doing between these slides and the first beat of the next bar bc it sounds like a small break (like the original). Is that correct? Thank you so much for this amazing video and your response!
@mikepalethorpe Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's tricky to get exactly how he does in terms of the timing of the slides. I've tried to indicate on the tab exactly when he starts shifting his fingers to the next spot but probably best not to stress too much about that, and just consider each bar as the point where you change. The slide's often occur just before then and so there is a transition where your just strumming while your fingers move. Hope that helps.
@GuitarVocals9 Жыл бұрын
@@mikepalethorpe Thank you for this long answer, Mike! I hope with consistency and slowed down play along I can figure it out one day. I have purchased the tab & video, I think you have put a lot of love and work into the lesson and I also want to thank you for including people who cannot afford. Greetings from Germany Niklas

Are there problems with this guitars intonation? I’m trying to train my ear a lil
@mikepalethorpe Жыл бұрын
There are! It’s an old guitar from the 80s with a bad broken neck that was glued back together (so no truss adjustments) and crazy high action. Having the the capo on 4 didn’t help either. Hopefully it’s not too painful to listen to.
@liamflynn2549 Жыл бұрын
@@mikepalethorpe definitely not too painful to listen to, your playing is obviously great. I've recently gained such a better understanding of the fretboard from out of nowhere it seems so wanted to confirm my suspicions haha. Thanks for the reply!
@mikepalethorpe Жыл бұрын
@@liamflynn2549 thanks for the kind words. The tapping part especially magnifies any intonation problems / high action because the force you hit the strings throws it off even more if you come at even a slightly off angle. I wanted to record on this guitar because it has a cedar top and I think JB’s original guitar for his self-titled EP was cedar top. The version on that is my favourite.

Have you done your research enough to know he never plays Ocean the same way,he'll always add a subtle change or 2 to kind of change it,he did this since he was a busker,it was a popular song that people liked and changing it every time allowed him to play it daily.
@mikepalethorpe10 ай бұрын
No doubt! This version is just a base so people can do the same
