Good to see you're back! Just bought an acre of land in Seward, will enjoy sleeping on terra firma this year, unlike last year in the hold.
@alaskasmallcraftadventures2 жыл бұрын
Right on! An acre in Seward is a hard find that'll make all the difference for those early morning tides. I was able to make the tide early in this video with the help of a fish camp I have nearby in Kachemak City.

Found a roller on a race that was cracked in half, lengthwise. The cup didn't look bad but the cone under the rollers was really spalled. I like to travel with a 20 volt DeWalt 1/2" drive cordless impact and sockets to fit the bolts on both the truck and the trailer. It can save a lot of grief. I do like the way you use a ratchet strap over the bow of your boat and don't just depend on the winch strap to hold your boat down. I have started doing that and the boat hauls much nicer on rough roads. Feels like there is much less bounce. The north ramp and parking lot are being redone. Scheduled to be open on July 1st. Mike at the tackle shop, Bay Barge Company, is great. If you get a chance, you can ask him about some herring rigs he used when he commercial trolled for King salmon. They look like the ticket! If we cross paths this summer, I will show you on Navionics a place that is great for ling cod and halibut. It is kind of on the way to Nuka. Won't do it on here.

Your comments are always worth taking a look at for good advice! Thanks for contributing to @alaskasmallcraftadventures lots of folks would do well to strap there boats down a little tighter before getting out on those traffic packed summer roads.

Nice video, guys. Love the fact that you shared both location and technique for this successful trip. Not many of these videos divulge that info! Well done.

We're pleased to hear that you found value in this video. We try to document as best we can, striving to improve every time. One thing fishers need to realize is that the ocean is HUGE! The fish are there one day, and gone the next! If there's bait fish moving through the predators are not far behind. And as for any trip out on the water, planning is essential for success. We appreciate you taking the time to comment on our videos it helps out a lot!

@@alaskasmallcraftadventures I was fishing (unsuccessfully) at approximately the same place a week or so prior to your trip, so I know the area and that it can definitely be hit and miss, like all of the area! Yesterday I fished by Gull Island, just for fun, and caught a bunch of pacific cod. My wife had a ball and we were amongst all of the bird action of the island, even saw our first puffins of the year (our boat is "The Tufted Puffin"). I caught my biggest ever cod in Kachemak Bay, likely around 15 pounds. It was lots of fun on a Sunday afternoon without using much fuel!
@alaskasmallcraftadventures2 жыл бұрын
The Tufted Puffin! love that, Ahh yes Gull Island is a great sight to see! I was actually just planning some filming over there just because of its beauty and proximity to Homer Harbor. If you ever get a chance to visit Nord Island in the Barrens it's truly like Gull Island x1000 with its natural habitat and bird collection, though roughly 65 miles from Homer Harbor towards Kodiak Island, across open Gulf of Alaska seas and $600 worth of fuel later.... still worth it though! And as far as coconut flake and panko coated pacific cod on the back deck grill goes..... no sandwich anywhere will compare! 🐟

@@alaskasmallcraftadventures would love to go to Barren Islands but I'm chicken in my 22ft Hewescraft with my skill and experience level. My wife and I will book a trip there sometime! Keep showing us how it's done in Kachemak Bay!

The North ramp is closed in Seward as well. The other ramp may be crowded! There may be fewer trips out of the bay. Possibly more people will overnite if they go out on a longer trip. There are a lot of little coves for an anchorage. There are some places I really want to try but I need to be careful of the weather, they tend to be a little rough for some reason. Perhaps there is a little more tidal influence there. One day last year I was out and there wasn't a ripple or swell, glassy smooth. Wish there was a way to know of those times in advance! This might be a good time to look at the wheel bearings on that trailer. I am rebuilding the last one on mine today, something I try to do every year, as much a headache as it is. I also try to carry a spare assembled hub with me if I travel any distance. Cheap insurance. I also keep an infrared temp. gun in my truck, and use it occasionally after I reassemble and tighten wheel bearings. Call me OCD, but I have never had a problem!
@alaskasmallcraftadventures2 жыл бұрын
Oh thanks for the heads up, I've never even used the other ramp in Seward! Hopefully the North one is closed for maintenance and not for good. It sure needs it. I like the tackle shop there too, not only for last minute supplies but the owner is always up for talking about fishing! And yes, trailer maintenance is never ending! Im sitting on only 5 tires at the moment from losing a bearing just this last trip! Bearing assemblies are about $70 so carrying a spare isn't a burden. Sometimes a dremmel tool to get the burs off the spline shaft or to cut bearing races and a puller are necessary to get the job done. I usually keep this in a tote in the bed of the pickup along with a spare tire, jack and dunnage. As always, thanks for commenting on here about stuff like this. A lot of viewers find these tips helpful so they don't miss the next tide!

Hey guys! It appears pretty clear earlier in the video that you are fishing with 360 degree flashers, yet when the first salmon is brought to the boat there is no flasher on the line. Are you actually using a dummy flasher (attached to the cannonball, not the line from the rod)? That’s the way I like to fish for salmon, then there’s no drag from the flasher when you’re fighting the fish. The other alternative I thought of was that this was a surface line, not attached to any of the downriggers, which I sometimes put out between my downriggers off the back of the boat. Just curious!
@alaskasmallcraftadventures2 жыл бұрын
Aye good eye mate! We are showing a couple different techniques all running together. The first fish caught came in on a purple hoochie w/full troll herring, leader line and then a small banana weight trolling on the top water way out behind the boat. The fish didn't strike until we reeled it in fast after towing it for a couple hours. The extra movement of a quick reel-in made all the difference in getting the strike.
@kwzook2 жыл бұрын
@@alaskasmallcraftadventures yeah, I noticed the banana weight on my 3rd view! Very cool, it pays to try variety! I’ll be out there Wednesday with some friends :).

I'm afraid that with the price of fuel the trips to Nuka Bay will be tough unless you team up with partners and split costs. I am going to try and pick better weather days and take out the smaller boat this year; 19' Boston Whaler Sentry with a canopy. Still seaworthy but half the cost in fuel. Just have to be careful. I always worry when I see people out 30 miles in an open-bow boat.
@alaskasmallcraftadventures2 жыл бұрын
Fuel is becoming quite the sham isn't it?! Nuka takes 90 gallons of fuel on a good day (165 miles worth of travel) and more if the wind picks up on you out there or you want to explore. Planning will certainly be key to fill the freezers this season. Having a spot to park the boat in both Seward and Homer will add some serious savings in fuel and time if you're not traveling the highway every time.
@akfisher5082 жыл бұрын
I remember putting in 134 gallons one day in Seward last year, then 137 gallons 2 days later. ouch! I have heard that the big cats that do the tours use 1K gallons of diesel on their 6 hr. round trip. Those guys don't waste around from point A to point B. Glad that isn't coming out of my wallet!
@alaskasmallcraftadventures2 жыл бұрын
As big a bill as gas can be, I wouldn’t trade my time on the water for anything. I am curious to see if the waterways have less traffic on them this summer because of prices. I know that the locals are needing to see a good summer of tourism after the last couple of years not producing.
