Why do people associated with #teamseas never mention preventative measures to reduce waste in the ocean which are far more effective than donating a few bucks? The best thing you can do is of course use less plastic, the second is to not buying fish or other "sea foods" since a large part of ocean garbage is fishing gear and it is by far more destructive than plastic bottles.

Let's not pretend like we, normal city folks, are really producing a significant amount of waste to the ocean. It's like saying the people are responsible for climate change - yeah, sure, it's good to recycle and what-not, but 99% of pollution comes from large companies and corporations, the oil industry, etc. Yes, if everyone in the world stops buying fish (which won't happen), it would cut down on ocean waste. But the majority 90% of it comes from villages without proper waste management that HAVE to throw trash in the rivers. To my understanding, 50% of TeamSeas funding goes to removing existing waste, and 50% to providing stuff for these villages.
