Because in Movies/T.V or plays you never see the reality of life, ei common everyday functions like bathroom, washing, combing, changing etc. So to make his character look real he decided to eat and could still play his scene without an unwanted distraction[toilet]. Remember if an everyday function is seen it's because the script calls for it. Pitts choice to be seen eating was outside the script and added an everyday living being function, most Actors wouldn't bother just stick to the script and make their character believable.
