I've always wanted to know what the Bowski, Jim Brown, Miss Daisy, Jethro, Leon Sphinx and Ella Fitzgerald cons were in relation to this movie.
@spdrcr56 ай бұрын
A Boesky: Saul playing Lyman Zerga. This is a reference to Ivan Boesky, a big-time trader on Wall Street who got caught committing securities fraud. The con is about a wealthy bankroller who has insider information. A Jim Brown: the confrontation between Frank Catton and Linus Caldwell, staged to distract Terry Benedict so that Linus can lift the security codes to the vault. Named for the famous American football player A Miss Daisy: references the SWAT truck our con men used as their getaway car. 'driving miss daisy' is a movie about a woman who has to get a chauffeur to drive her around. under the guise of the SWAT truck, Danny, Rusty and the gang can escape without a hitch. Two Jethros: refers to the Malloy brothers, Turk and Virgil. The two jethros are the 'hillbilly, gear-headed types" who are hired to look after miss daisy. In the movie, they provide general two-man work like the distraction they pull with the balloons covering the security camera on the casino floor so Livingston can get into the video surveillance room. Leon Spinks: the distraction in the form of disrupting the boxing match. there was this episode of NCIS once where the director went home to Chicago to investigate the death of his boxer friend. in the episode, they mentioned this boxing match where Leon Spinks beat Muhammad Ali, and it was a total upset that no one expected. no one expected the power to go out in the middle of the match in the movie, either, and it created absolute chaos, which was great for our con artists. Ella Fitzgerald: the idea to loop a tape of a robbery over Benedict's security system, a robbery which had actually been staged the previous night as a distraction while the real robbery takes place. it comes from a commercial for memorex i saw in my ad production class the other week where a recording of Ella Fitzgerald's voice breaks a glass, then the voice over says, "is it live or is it memorex?" the concept is that Benedict doesn't know if the robbery he's seeing is the robbery that's actually happening.

I got you man. Boesky is referring to Ivan Boesky. A wall street trader got caught commiting bank fraud, basically a money man with questionable ethics to bankroll the operating. Jim Brown is referring to the famous American football player, someone to cause a confrontation so they can lift the security codes from the vault. Miss Daisy, is referring to the film Driving miss daisy. Something to hall them around/get away. Basically the SWAT van. Two Jethros. Nothing famous but its a very hillbilly/hick name which implies gear heads or troublemakers types to run various errands (observation, driving, etc). Leon Spinks, a famous boxer that knocked out Muhammad Ali. Basically it was so unexpected at the time that it caused a massive upset. They con here is a massive distraction/upset no one expects, this is the power going out in the casino. Ella Fitzgerald. Its from an old ad Ella did where she was the voiceover. It was an add for glass breaking an Ellas voice says: "is it live, or is it memorex?" Basically a conn to trick Benedict where he doesnt know if the robbery is actually happening or not.

This movie is seriously one of the best with its writing and humor. Where so many movies lean so heavily on edgy humor related to sex or race or over-the-top swearing and crudity to be funny (not that there's anything inherently wrong with those things in the context of facilitating comedy - they're just heavily overdone and overused in comedy these days), Ocean's 11 relies almost solely on wit and good writing to be funny. My friends and I still quote it literally all the time - "I owe you for the thing with the guy in the place", "They VILL BE HERE", "I'll turn it off when I'm ready to turn it off", or when playing poker and someone fails a bluff, sometimes they have to show their shameful "all....reds".

One of the best all time films!! But that doesn't mean i won't point out a bunch of useless shit nobody cares about. 1. Oscar Clearly, Danny knows Oscar. They have a relationship of some kind where Oscar will risk his job by letting him in to a secure facility, have access to highly privileged documents, and even take them off site. So what TF is with the flashlight routine? If he literally does not care what Danny does, or takes off the premises, why is he shining a light in their face or even caring how long this takes? 2. Why does Danny need to take the plans home to make copies? Because 1, there's no fucking way he's got a printer that size in whatever little apartment he's rented. Remember, it's his first day out is prison and he just got there. Second, an architectural firm would have the proper type of printing capabilities in house. So why not have Oscar walk you over there and get that done? 3. Even in 2001, a firm that handles this type of business would not just have around the clock guards, but they would have video surveillance and site sign in procedures. Even if he somehow met Oscar and gained his trust in the first few hours of freedom, he doesn't have the entire resources of the firm in his pocket. 4. Ummmm Vegas has certainly been robbed. MANY times. Only 7 years before this film, circus circus casino was robbed for nearly 3 million. There are dozens of others including the Bellagio. I know, i know. Movie has to movie. My point is that it's weak story telling. If the 3 "most successful" attempts were just morons grabbing a wad of money/chips and running, then someone with a brain would have definitely figured it out. 5. Ruben is not this stupid. There is a very public story of Benedict torpedoing his casino and muscling him out of the business. Then all of a sudden it gets robbed in a elaborate heist? Obviously this would need somebody with intimate knowledge of the system and how it works. Say maybe... "The guy who invented casino security"? And also has a huge public beef with him? Ruben would be at the top of the list of suspects if something like this happened. There is no way he puts himself at that kind of risk. Maybe as a "silent silent partner", but he's actually involved both monetarily and physically with this entire thing. Forensic accounting alone would probably create a trail leading back to Ruben. Let alone all of the times he's with the crew and in the casino.
