Nostalgia! grew up near the beach. Built walls, dams, and pretend hydro schemes between high tides. Losing them to the waves was one of the best bits and the inevitable soaking you got from that rogue wave. Great times. good effort guys (from a self claimed expert).

Reminds me of a holiday in 1988 on the Med, near Elne. The River Tech formed an estuarine lake sometimes (it constantly shifted year by year) and in August there was quite a decent sized lake held back by the tiniest of sand bars. the kids were set to work, soon joined by German, French, Dutch kids, all of whom got the message in the way kids do. After some judicious digging, nature took over, the held back waters carved out their own channel and within minutes there was a full scale dam buster type escape. the kids (and more than a few adults) revelled in it - floating through at warp speed 1 into the Med and out for 50 metres or so before scrambling ashore for another go. A magical moment. the lake dropped a good 3 feet that day, but hey - it had been changing shape and capacity for centuries, we just gave it a helping hand. i googled it recently - completely different and far narrower. Still good for a day's fun though. here's a thing. just a few miles south is a similar, almost identical river system over the border in Spain. On the French side, upstream, the river is dammed periodically and the flow diverted to right and left on alternate days to water peaches and other small farms. In Spain, nothing. Their river dries up during the summer. During the winter it clearly flows asa torrent, hurtling stones and carving new channels all the time. Almost identical sized rivers. what does that tell you/

I have dedicated nearly two decades of my life to studying oceanography, which has been an incredibly fulfilling and enriching journey. Over the years, I have gained profound knowledge and practical experience in understanding the complexities of the ocean and its vital role in our planet's ecosystem. It has been a privilege to contribute to the field, and I look forward to many more years of exploration and discovery. And based on this vast experience I can say that the water just wrecked that puny little dam. Get got.

I used to dig these teardrop shaped dams where the inside was dug out and the thickest part was toward the ocean and the point towards land, with my son. We would also eventually allow water to flood the inside creating a pool by creating channels directing the waves around the dam and to the top before running in. We occasionally used big rocks to shore up the dam as well. It was a frantic and mad struggle to keep the dam standing. My advice is to use spade shovels. They're much easier in the sand.

I loved doing this type of thing as a kid! One year there was a large amount of seaweed that was washed onto shore. I realized that if I layered the seaweed and sand together, it could withstand the erosion of the waves. I remember being so proud to have a structure survive through high tide. 🙂

For me it was Hampstead Heath in London - the wild bits - or the ponds; in those days kids went off for the day with instructions to 'be home by' and the rest of the day was ours - feeding the deer in the little zoo, making 'dens' in secret places in the trees, exploring for acorns or horse chestnuts in season, 'fishing' in the ponds or paddling.. Arriving home totally exhausted - generally just a tad late! That is just how childhood should be, and now I fear too many kids are driven by car to pre-arranged activities & never experience the freedoms of a 'wild' childhood!

Perfect down time for kids and adults. I will point out that the sand wall is more of a dike intended to block the encroaching sea then a dam which is sited on a river to control flooding or to create a reservoir to generate power and provide recreational activities.

really wish i grew up at the beach.. at least i had a few precious holidays at some nice beaches with relatively intact nature.. good times, never would have thought how valuable these memories once would become

My Brother and my Cousins and I built a huge City on the Beach at Atlantic City. It must have been 25 yards wide and 20 yards deep ..... With a castle, cathedral and palace! All washed away by the sea like a disaster movie!

My brother and I did something similar to this but smaller almost every time we went to the beach, so this video is very relatable.

Ooooh 8:03 is where the sea breaches their defences, that was strangely exciting and took me back years to my childhood in South Devon, playing with nature, beautiful. Suspenseful music adding the feeling of jeopardy😂👍🏻👍🏻

The ocean has the power to dissolve stone. Maybe these kids didn’t know that before they spent their day building a dam made of sand. Entertaining nonetheless. 👍😁

Use to do something similar on huge beach on vancouver island in canada. The beach was like 1/2 mile deep of sand (used for sand castle competitions). We would run up to the water, build a castle wall around us and keep it up as long as possible as the tide slowly came in. Once we got overrun with water we'd run about 40 ft further away from the water and do it all again. Build a wall around us, wait for water to come in and see how long we'd last until the water broke the walls. Then run another 40 ft from the water and do it again, over and over until we had no more beach left. It was super fun!

At least this kids are growing up better than most kids. That wall was pretty weak and full of issues. If they used stones and packed it with a gentler slope it would have survived but anyways that doesn't matter, what matters is that they had fun doing something other than watching the screen all day.
