"If she bites my finger, at least we will get the line out" - Wally's words show his dedication and commitment to his job as seal rescuer with OCN. When you hold an injured seal pup and you see the pain and terror in their face, you are ready to do whatever it takes to make it better.
Gill net has always been one of our most hated culprits. It is invisible under water and designed to entrap anything it catches. It is so evil, that most countries in the world have declared gill nets illegal, including Namibia. Those entanglements are the proof that gill net fishing is taking place regularly. Somebody is knowingly breaking all laws and gets away with it. 🦭

This little seal was *so* cute. I notice that when I raise the pitch of my voice to imitate Tony's here at the house and say "There's my puppy!" our little doggo's tail wags twice as fast as usual. :D Between Tony's voice, Wally's gentle removal of entanglements, Denzil's speed and dazzling smile and Naude's POV camera clenched between his teeth as he begins the chase, I think these "puppies" are very lucky indeed to have the entire OCN Team nearby.

I am SO SO glad the team caught these babies when they did ... BOTH entanglements were absolutely HORRIBLE, and most certainly death traps for both pups. Plus, it's SO wonderful watching the team in action ... EACH member of OCN is attentive and caring, and you can tell each member also worries about the well-being of every seal (animal) they rescue. It's so heartwarming when the freed seals run to the water, and the little ones are darling when they're confused before they leave. Thank you, team OCN, for doing what you do SO well!

Two more beautiful babies saved, the second one being so horribly entangled, the gill net was in its mouth and caught there. That sweet little thing has a second chance now to grow and live a seal's life, when it was doomed before the OCN guys intervened. Lovely to see how patient and careful these heroes are, to make sure all the entanglement is removed. Thanks, guys!

Great saves, team! Wally’s specialty often positions him right by the seal mouths. His low bite rate is a testament to his abilities, and possibly special mojo that dissuades seals from biting him. Years ago I came across an article regarding seals dying from entanglements on the west coast.(USA) I started searching to see if anyone was saving seals anywhere. Viewers often comment "the seal must know you're there to help, because it relaxes and doesn't bite". To me, it looks like the seals calm down and don't fight because they realize they're outmatched, so they're saving their strength to be ready for the next attack. When released, they're both surprised there was no attack and trying to decide which way to escape, so they stand there looking at all the guys standing around and run off to an opening. The big tough seals just fight nonstop and go charging off towards the water regardless who's in their way, because they figure they can fight their way out eventually. The baby seals don't know what's going on, so they just do anything.

They sometimes stop fighting the rescuers out of shock. They do seem to feel relief once a tight entanglement has been cut, they can breathe again, and that feeling m ight distract them. Rescues are stressful for an already stressed out animal, but unfortunately there is no better way.

We scan the different groups of Cape fur seals with binoculars, looking for 'imperfections' in their fur. It is really difficult, but we became quite good at it. The hardest part is to keep track of the target during the chase among hundreds of look-alike predators.
