Oh gosh that bit at the end about the dad being unable to go to a baseball game with his kids because the crowd's cheers reminded him of the screams he heard that night... that gives me chills to think about. Poor man. PTSD is no joke, and it's interesting/sad to see that something so normal and happy for so many people can remind some people of something so unimaginably horrible... I hope his kids understood why.

The unfortunate thing was PTSD wasn't recognised like we do today, even soldiers suffering with "Shell Shock" during WW1 were shot as deserters for fleeing the trenches for various reasons.

I remember reading once about how a survivor mentioned that the sounds of the screaming people in the water was almost identical to that of a large stadium crowd. It might have been him. Something to think about the next time you're at a football or baseball game.

One of the survivors, First class passenger Arthur G. Peuchen spent the rest of his days living not far from where I live, his reputation was unfairly stained for being a man that survived the sinking. His house was called Woodlands and it sold recently- in it's day it was beautiful.
@leonardobarbosa7825
@leonardobarbosa7825 16 сағат бұрын
That's a shame, considering that, given the amount of disaster management training of most of the WSL crew (ie no training at all), having Peuchen on board of the lifeboat increased its chances of being properly roared and guided instead of drifting into the waves and everyone ending up dead by freezing or starvation if the Carpathia couldn't find them. He was let on board especifically for that reason by Lightoller, whose policy of "women and children only" instead of "women and children first, then everyone else if there is still space" surely caused a lot of preventable deaths.
@J.MacInnes

@@leonardobarbosa7825 So many of the men that survived did so because of being assigned to row a boat or by sheer dumb luck- they made every effort to go down with the ship and die but failed in the attempt. They spent the rest of their lives being made to feel guilty for having lived.

@@J.MacInnes Yeah, and I imagine it might have been even worse for the sole Japanese passanger and survivor, given the emphasis on honor in death. I think will be forever famous since it was a practical example of Victorian/Edwardian chivalry in its most extreme right before a war that wiped out that world in such a violent way. Basically everything the survivors knew as the natural order of things crumbled into dust not just in the sinking but also in 1918.

The baker who fortified himself with whiskey before riding the stern into the Atlantic and treading freezing water for a near impossible time - he was back to work just days later. Eva Hart lived to see the wreck found... in two parts, as she had sworn, against the accepted narrative, for over seventy years (since the age of seven!). Officer Boxhall went on to work Aquitania, before becoming an adviser on the film 'A Night To Remember'.

Interesting fact about the Titanic disaster both Captain Rostron of the Carpathia and Captain Lord of the Californian were born in the same town of Bolton in Lancashire. It is a very large textile town, but not near the sea, although the sea can be seen from the top of Winter Hill. Robert Whitehead the inventor of the modern torpedo came from Bolton as well. PTSD must have plagued many survivors. Fredrick Fleet and Jack Thayer took their own lives. Harold Bride soon left the sea and sold pharmaceuticals for 25 years. Who could blame him? Many suffered life long injuries. Archibald Gracie died 6 months after the disaster from complications of diabetes exacerbated by the disaster. Every survivor had a story. I guess that’s what I find the most interesting.

After being captivated with Titanic since early childhood, I later heard a family legend (from one of her daughters) that my great-grandmother had tickets to board, but missed a connecting train. I'd love to verify this with records, but the best I've been able to find was a manifest that showed her arriving in NY in May 1912, aboard... wait for it... the Carpathia. She was probably Third Class on both tickets. If anyone knows how to test this story, I'd love to know!

I've heard everything about Titanic ever since the 1997 movie. The sheer size of the ship in 1912 was astonishing, but the fact that she broke in half and then there stern imploded just seconds after sinking was the stuff of horrors to the survivors that night. It's even more sad the third class passengers took the heaviest casualties of all of Titanic's survivors in the aftermath of the sinking, and were left in poverty with everything they had aboard Titanic all lost with the ship for years until she she was found 60 years after the tragedy. RIP to everyone who died with Titanic or in the water that night, and to the survivors who lived to see the true, unimaginable horror story of Titanic's implosion and the screaming survivors in the water in that nightmare.

This is the part of the story of Titanic that never gets told enough. From Captain Rostron's heroic charge to the site of the disaster to the days and weeks after the disaster where human compassion and goodwill prevailed in place of despair and hopelessness. This is especially apt now, given that we are in the weeks to Christmas and the time of generosity and happy expectation is upon us. The trauma the survivors experienced can't be erased, but it was certainly not in vain, as both SOLAS and the International Ice Patrol came to be as a direct result of the Titanic disaster.

Best 👏 Titanic 👏 Video👏On👏KZbin Mike, sir, the level of empathy deep consideration and compassion you have given to this topic in this video is insurmountable. I am gobsmacked by the quality of information. Some of these facts you told will be true costing in my head for a long time.

I am very ill right now, and your videos are damping a little bit of the pain i experience. I would be very happy to see a Video abt the Wilhelm Gustlov, as my gradfather nearly boarded it.. Luckily he and his mother were too late to board her.

Mauritz Håkan Björnström-Steffansson, a 1st Class survivor (who jumped onto Collapsible D with Hugh Woolner) filed for the largest claim for financial compensation against White Star Line over the loss of a painting copy of Merry-Joseph Blondel's "La Circassiene au Bain". In early 1913, Mauritz demanded for $100,000 (the equivalent to $3.1 million in 2023, according to Wikipedia).

The city of Halifax also played a role. Many of the dead were collected by ships out of Halifax and were laid to rest there. The maritime museum there has a fantastic exhibit dedicated to the Titanic.

Many of the drawings in the early part of the video appeared in the book "Story Of The Wreck Of The Titanic" published in 194, I believe. My grandmother had a copy of it and gave t to me when I was about 10 years old. It was another part of my fascination with the ship almost from day one. I remember reading it from cover to cover and still have it.

I seem to remember that Boxhall advised 'on set' the filming of 'A Night to Remember'. It is the Captain and crew of the Californian and their inaction that still confounds me. My father took me to the film on release in the 'fifties and he remembered the news of the actual sinking.

Fascinating video. I'd really love to see you do a video about the aftermath on the Lusitania, the worlds reaction and what happened to the survivors and what compensation they got, and how survivors coped with what happened. People who lost their entire family aboard or all their children did they have any other children? Did they rebuild their lives etc.
