I've been listening to death metal since the late 80s, and even these deathcore bands (which I'm a fan of) still find ways to hit some insanely brutal moments that don't feel totally cliche. I guess what I'm saying is, death metal has been around for close to 40 years now. It's not going anywhere like many predicted. There are still a lot of death metal bands out there, but I don't look at deathcore as "not metal". To me, it's still death metal, period. Just a subgenre of death metal. Just as there's brutal death metal, blackened death metal, death metal, melodic death metal, technical death metal, doom/death metal (and on and on).
