Damn I still remember six years ago when these guys came into my job at the time of all places, a little family owned pizza place in California. I overheard one of them telling my boss they're a band and just got done touring. I already knew of Oceans Ate Alaska but didn't know it was them just by looking at them. So on my way out, I stopped at their table feeling nervous and I asked "What guys are you band in?" and they looked at me like what? I felt so stupid and said "I'm sorry I meant what band are you guys?" and they said oh we're Oceans Ate Alaska. I said oh you guys are good! They said thanks mate. Still had straight faces and looking at me like I'm a weirdo which I am. I awkwardly said bye and waved at them. Still cringe thinking about it now lol

This good vs better debate is just ridiculous. You can't compare a deathcore drummer to a metalcore drummer as they both fill different styles. Deathcore: fast speed, blast beats, double bass, over long periods of time. Now lets compare it to Chris: he is literally unmatched in his style of drumming. I say it because I haven't seen many drummers playing stuff like he does. And I have seen a lot. Just listen closely to his patterns. It is insane. Mark Minorow of BTM covered some of his songs like Blood Brothers. But just didn't reach the standards of Chris. Chris' style is not just about "speed" like those of many deathcore drummers. It is precision, ghost-note-playing, the little details matching the rhythms and patterns of the guitars. It's just so much more complex. And barely anyone could fill his place if he left the band. Pretty sure.

Just my opinion, but I don't think James made this band what it is, Chris did. This band wouldn't have gone viral and gotten so much praise in the community if not for the amazing drumming of Chris. Tons of reaction videos came out during hikari, when James left the band. A ton of new listeners, my self included came from hikari and stayed because Chris is one of the best drummers in the scene. I'm not saying anything bad about james, just Chris is the heart of this band and is how they became more well known
