@AbsoluteZero67144 жыл бұрын
:) Glad you share a love of the ocean. For me there’s really no other way to cultivate an intimate relationship with the ocean than to take care of a small piece of it on a daily basis. That’s why I have decided to become a reef tank hobbyist. You may swim with fish and ocean animals while diving or snorkeling or doing research on them up close, but none is as magical as having them live for years, even decades under none other than your own care and regard for their environment. I am deeply upset that there are activist groups trying to end the saltwater hobby. If possible I would only buy Captive bred fish and corals (which unfortunately is far from a reality currently, save for a select number of species), but ending the saltwater hobby altogether would mean losing a vital source of inspiration for future generations in their appreciation of God’s design when He created the oceans of the world. Not to mention with the rate that our coral reefs are dying due to global warming, some species may only exist in captivity as a result of captive breeding efforts a few decades down the line. We may even assist marine biologists by growing corals and raising fish to give back to the oceans (of course we’ll keep some to ourselves in our tanks :)). We can be the staunchest allies of marine biologists and I really believe that even the marine biologist experience is not complete without getting into the hobby side of things. :) My deepest disrespect for these brain dead conservation groups and the politicians who back them unconditionally. If they really think they can act in the better interests of these beautiful and amazing marine animals, they should prove that by taking care of a reef tank. I bet 90% of them will think it’s too difficult after only a week. If they have not personally experienced what it takes to maintain such fragile ecosystems yet try to attack the people who can AKA us, they’re in no position to do what’s “best” for these animals. Same with their attitude towards cats and dogs really. I’d not hesitate to use brutal tactics to crush them if I ever become a governor or even the president. I’d treat them as a modern day KKK, domestic terrorist groups and use every tool in my playbook to track down their leaders one by one and rip their organizational abilities to shreds.

I'm currently an undergraduate student looking to get a masters in marine biology. I've been fascinated with this career for a long time. However, one of the biggest issues I've been worried about in pursuing this career is the whole independency thing. I've always imagined working with a team in this sort of career, but if that's not how it really works, I'm not sure if its really going to suit me since I'm really used to following instructions, a set plan, a schedule, or someone else's orders. Why did you give up becoming a veterinarian? I just graduated earlier this year, but I've been thinking for a while now about going back to school to study to become a marine veterinarian because working with marine animals has always been a dream
@oceanscholar4 жыл бұрын
I gave up becoming a marine veterinarian because I realized I really wasn't all that interested in animal health and medicine. I'm far more interested in ecology and environmental advocacy. Although you can definitely incorporate both of these into the life of a marine veterinary position, I didn't want those interests to come second to the primary role of animal health. The road is TOUGH for marine veterinarians, but the persistent and dedicated do succeed! Also, once you actually receive your DVM, you can do all kinds of things! Even if you don't end up finding a position to work with aquatic animals. One of the great benefits of pursuing veterinary science is that DVMs will always have a job.

How do u become a deep sea diver or can you tell me ore about it? Also how can I join/where? United Kingdom And are there any qualifications (degrees)
@oceanscholar3 жыл бұрын
If you're looking to become a "deep sea SCUBA diver" you should definitely look into technical (TEC) diving courses, which will teach you how to dive deeper and for longer. If you're looking to begin a course I would do a google search and a bit of your own research to find a dive shop near you that offers TEC. There are no degrees that you need to begin this certification, but you will need extensive diving experience. I would find a shop and talk to an instructor to get more info!

@oceanscholar4 жыл бұрын
Since I'm currently waiting for my employment with Fulbright in the Philippines next year, at the moment, I'm definitely staying in one place. But if you're talking about the career of being a marine biologist, normally, marine biologists stay in one place for most of the year. Although, they may travel substantially during their field season for a few months out of the year.

Being a marine biologist doesn't require you to know how to swim.. lots of scientists doesn't even dive only spent the rest of their careers in lab, writing, and giving lectures

@oceanscholar4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what "more" might be in reference to here, but in terms of this list, a position as an FWC law enforcement officer might offer the best option for you! Jobs with the government tend to have very stable levels of job security, with lots of employee benefits and a substantial salary. Also, as a law enforcement officer, you would spend a great deal of time patrolling the ocean and in the field! Also, I think it's important to ask yourself what kind of field experience you are looking for. Because the "field experience" of an FWC law enforcement officer is very different from the "field experience" of a university professor.

There definitely is somewhere in the world! I would say your best bet for helping your career path is beginning to locate and talk to professionals in your desired field. See if you can find marine mammal rescuers near you and see if you can talk to them or shadow them! That experience will help you immensely in learning about the career and having something to put on your resume related to it.
