OCFA Handcrew Suffers Major Accident

Eight firefighters from the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) were seriously injured in a rollover crash in Irvine on September 19, 2024. The firefighters were returning from a 12-hour shift battling the Airport Fire in Trabuco Canyon when their fire truck swerved to avoid a ladder on the road, hit a guardrail, and overturned on the 241 Toll Road near Portola Parkway. Six of the firefighters were critically injured, while two sustained minor injuries. All were taken to local hospitals for treatment, with one firefighter airlifted due to the severity of their injuries.
This incident occurred just as the firefighters had finished their arduous task of containing a 23,500-acre wildfire, making the crash especially devastating for the OCFA team. OCFA Fire Chief Brian Fennessy expressed his heartbreak, stating that the department is now facing a different kind of battle as the firefighters begin their road to recovery.
