I do believe a sliding hatch is best. Not as hard opening and closing against strong winds and wave action. Also can be partially opened. The work is in designing a sliding hatch that sheds water, and has minimal water ingress. JMHO

To me they're the last thing I'd want. They all seem to take on water when it splashes against them, even rain seems to get in. In a rollover it's common to read that a waterfall of water gushed in. I know they're convenient for walking through and exchanging a lot of air in nice weather though.

What was the reasoning behind a round hatch vs a square hatch? Building round things is always much more complicated. There will be more stress on the single hinge that is you must use as well. The same dual gasket approach could be used in a DIY square hatch.

Another way to help 'glass conform to curved surfaces, is to cut your strips 'on the bias' - ie at 45 degrees to the fibers. The downside is that it requires careful handling to not lose its shape entirely, and also (potentially) wastes some cloth....

Can you do a video on your calculations and estimates eith regards to centre of buoyancy,pressure, mass etc and the positioning of the keel to the sail plan...point of vanishing stability etc. I think these would be good as they give clear indication as to your boat estimate performance 🙂

Not that there will be a next time. But I would recommend using a wide band clamp or at least strap style tie downs in order to ensure a perfect circle. Wrapping it around the form increases proximity to perfection. 👍🏽

Hah, I know the basics, but there's probably someone much more qualified who's made a video about it. I think basically if you epoxy on top of epoxy work that hasn't fully cured you can get an excellent bonding of the molecules and they kinda fuse together.

No, I was a Surface Warfare Officer on a guided missile destroyer. I got scuba certified about 2 years ago and the weights are also useful around the shop.

Well done, but the width of the hatch hinge looks way too narrow. If you make it more like 300mm wide it will resist twisting much better. Just an observation.

It could be, we'll see. A friend and I bounced a lot of design ideas back and forth and after a lot of thinking we settled on this hinge design. The pin will be pretty snug in its slot so there shouldn't be enough twisting motion to matter.

As I said, I've been working on this for years, it's not like I didn't consider wider versions. It's a robust wide hinge for a light hatch cover. It saves on weight, materials, and cost. Some Navy hatches work the same, along with many portholes. You can find many examples online. If it doesn't work out, it can always be replaced.

You are building a boat that will move like a crazy thing when the wind and waves get exciting and you will undoubtedly fall against it whilst it is open and the hinge will fail. You do you, I will enjoy seeing the outcome of your labours when things get interesting.

Super cool! An advantage of having no boom or vang: Nothing to get in the way of operating this hatch! Hey, will you want / need a lucite light in the middle of the hatch door, to check out the sail trim when underway?

That would look cool too. The round hatches are pretty unique though, I've only ever seen them on Yrvind's boats and the famous boat Jester built by Blondie Hasler had one as well, which heavily inspired my own hatch being round.

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat - It's what is known as a pram (baby-carriage) hood. It's on a kind of rotating track so you can turn it to face whatever direction the wind is coming from.

@@СергейГордеев-м5л - The fabric that peel ply is made of, is nylon (or rayon). It is the same fabric used as a liner underneath wedding dresses to make the dress anti-static and non-clinging. Hope that helps.

My old Maurice Griffiths boat had double gasket coaming hatches, but they were square and wooden. Atrocious amount of bad design deck hatches with plastic closure handles, no wonder they get sucked off under green water. Must keep the water out!
