I bought an Octatrack about 2yrs ago and fumbled with it for a month or two before I decided I hated it and sold it off. Had this video been available then, I would have probably never sold it. Excellent work, friend. Really nice job of breaking down the basics and actually showing the keystrokes and menu options during operation. Thank you! New Octratrack on the way!

Thanks mate! I was wondering for years what it was too. In the end I just had to gamble and get one, and learn on my own. I want to spare people the hesitation and struggling first steps. So it makes me feel like my work is truly meaningful hearing your story.

I caved and got an OT. I was making all kinds of stuff on it within a few hours. In my opinion, the Machinedrum UW+'s workflow was more of a challenge to learn than the OT. now I got my eyes on that A4....either that or a half-year wait on a Cirklon. To be able to load entire 20-minute songs and trim them down without zero loading time was the deal maker for me. That pickup machine was just the mutts nuts.

@johncitizen8828 I haven't tried any of the 'takt boxes but with something like the octatrack manual by Synthdawg, it should be quite smooth. The official manual isn't good. To better describe my experience...it's not difficult to learn, but it can be difficult to find the information you need to learn it. Get one! And get Synthdawg's manual, it's only a couple dollars

This was an excellent tutorial, and I learned a lot. My problem with the OT is that it's so much harder to get basic tracks down than using a synth and drum machine. I could lay all of that down in minutes with the A4 and AR. Of course, I can't mangle the sound, but I'm really not into that anyway. Having said all that, I own the OT and hope to become a more proficient user. Cheers, Cuckoo!

It takes a while to get used to. And it's not a tape recorder, so yeah, there's a lot of choices to take into account. But in my next tutorial I'll be going more rockn'roll, and trying to tame the Pickup machines. They're much faster in many ways, and different. More like loop pedals.

I was lost after the first two minutes. Just like my Analog Four Electron products for me are difficult to operate. Even after a year of using the A4 I still get lost in the menus. The double function buttons can be very frustrating at times. Don,t get me wrong I still love what the A4 can do but I think the interface needs a lot of work. It looks like this unit has the same or similar type interface. Thanks for the post Cukoo.

It just seems like such a task to have fun with it. I'm spoiled by my syntakt i think.

I really wanna know how the workflow of this thing works when creating a song entirely using this unit. Once all my flex sample slots are full, how do I continue to build my track? The arranger just arranges patterns, so does that mean in an entire song I can only have 8 samples being manipulated? I am confused as to where static machines come in and how I should be using them, is there a way to turn flex samples into static samples to free up the recorder buffer?

Quick question, is there a 'Kit' to the octatrack similar to how each pattern on the RYTM can have seperate kits? is there a way to have patterns change samples on the octa without P-locking samples?
@truecuckoo
@truecuckoo 7 жыл бұрын
+Enrique Martinez there are two things that are somewhat similar to kits. Banks and Parts. A bank is a whole setup of machines, effect settings, 16 scene settings, 16 patterns, all the samples associated to each track, and 4 Parts. There are 16 Banks. I see a Bank as a Song. A Part is a variation within a Bank, that contains instant changes of: the samples associated to each track, 16 scenes, track settings. While changing Bank will move to a different pattern stored in that Bank - changing Parts will stay in the same pattern, just play it with a different variation of settings.

Hey Cuckoo, great video. I have a question I thought you may be able to answer. I've noticed that the mutes on the Octatrack Mk2 (and Mk1) function a bit differently than I was expecting. They cut the audio completely, not allowing the sample to finish playing or allowing the fx tails to play out. I was wondering what methods you use to get around this? I am used to using mutes as a way to bring tracks in and out on my other machines and while its still possible to do on the Octatrack I find it a bit more difficult. Thanks!

hey!!! must say that your reviews and vids are exellent. very deep and interesting I want to hear from you: what you consider the main differences between the Octatrack and the RYTM? , in terms of making your sounds and beats, playability and last (I know it's the hardest) what electron gear would you buy if you'll have to choose one?
@truecuckoo
@truecuckoo 7 жыл бұрын
+Design iec hey thanks! The Octatrack is all about samples and sampling. I love playing with long samples that I slice up, pitch shift. I can do long backing tracks mixed with slices and one-shots, and Live effects on incoming tracks etc. The Rytm, although it plays samples too, is powerful in its analog architecture with sample layers. I love both of them. But in an electro improvised session I'd rather use the Rytm, since I can create and tweak sounds. I'm seeing the Octatrack more and more as an way to pack a lot of stuff into one place, and play it. For an acoustic improv I'd definitely go with the Octatrack since I can do live sampling, looping etc. They're both worthy consideration.

It's such a great tutorial! I have a question though: I bought the octatrack to have a machine with which to perform with, BUT I also want to control my other machines (loop machines and synths) as in playback while I jam on other analog gear and I wanted to use the octatrack to trigger them from midi files. MY HEART SUNK when I found out that I couldn't import midi files into the octatrack. Could you make a tutorial or suggest one that shows how to quickly load midi tracks into the octatrack? I was about to throw my spanking new Octatrack out the window until I got into your tutorial (the octatrack tutorials are really arid). Thanks! Patreon was well worth it!
@truecuckoo
@truecuckoo 8 жыл бұрын
+Juan Necochea he he, yeah I can feel your frustration! I still haven't done any serious MIDI on the Octatrack. But you know, whatever you want the Octatrack to do, has to be created on the Octatrack itself. It's not a standard MIDI file player. I know a few people that only use it for MIDI, so I think it's pretty capable. I should take a deeper look at the MIDI part and see if I can make a video about it.

Hi Cuckoo, thanks for these videos, I actually use them as a sort of Octatrack course, this is so much easier to follow than the user manual! I would like to ask you something rather specific about the octatrack; I would like to know if it's possible to play samples like one would play the keyboard ? I know it's possible using chromatic mode, but the downside of this method is ofcourse the lack of overlapping and the impossibility of playing more than one note at the time. Do you think it's possible to actually play the samples using a midi controller and a small (midi or usb) keyboard using the midi channels?

theforsbergshow Hello there. Don't worry about your English. It's perfect! Some people even think that I'm French! Ha ha. About the Octatrack.. I think anyone can learn to use it. There's a lot of stuff you can do on it. To become one with it I think it's a help if you're not afraid of technical stuff. If you're great at remembering computer shortcuts it's probably also helpful. If you wanna be fast and fluent like ***** you need to practice a lot and make it your instrument, and remember all shortcuts. Computer musicians will certainly appreciate the huge Compact Flash card possibilities. Just move huge collections of samples and loops over, and you've got a great starting point. I almost don't use samples at all, so for me I'm basing all my experiences on recording. I'm still learning. Is it a good first sampler? Only you can decide that. I've heard about really great musicians that move from more traditional samplers to Octatrack to experience the unique musical depth of the Octatrack. There might be a steep learning curve for beginners, and this is why I made this video. To introduce it.. The worst thing is probably that even though you find it in a store - nobody in the store can show you how it works... I always recommend people to try it before they buy it. But with this.. it might be difficult, because it's so dependant on external sound sources, or sample libraries.

Hi Cuckoo, thanks a lot for this tutorial and your special and 'artistical' way to demonstrate...it's really refreshing... great vid, like it very much ;-) ... it helps me to make my decision to buy for the first time one of these machines...but I'am still undecided...I've seen a lot and a lot of tutorials...It will not be easy... don't know witch one, Octa, A4 or maybe... MonoM?? ....what do you think ? You maybe answer, ' It depends of your needs and so forth...' ;-)..but is it possible to know your opinion about 'the sound' of the Monomachine compared to the A4... thankss..soo..mmuch....I'will quickly check your second part of the octa tutorial, wouww.. :-)...Greetings from Belgium (sorry for my bad english!) ;-)

+Manu Cègo Hey there. All the Elektron machines are nice in their own ways. The Monomachine vs Analog Four is a tough one. The Analog Four is has a more modern architecture, sequencer and also Overbridge. In many ways it also has a richer sound palette. But the Monomachine has got some unique stuff like the sharp FM sounds, the vocal sounds, running effect chains etc. The Momomachine sound is very digital, and in many ways easier to mix due to all of the eq and filters available for each track. The Analog Four has a more saturated range, and due to the Analog nature there's a lot of headroom for oversaturating to your heart's content. I'm glad I have the Mono, but I mostly use the Analog Keys as an allround choice, going to the Monomachine for more specific needs. It's all about taste :)

+cuckoomusic Oh okey Thanks a lot Cuckoo...:-)..one more question..is it possible to do the same thing that you've done here on this vid with the Octa..(recording from an other synth) but with the Mono?..for example I have a Minibrute synth + 3 volcas...I want to record some analog sound into the Mono...is it possibe to work with it the same way you do with the Octa..(trigger,..) Thanks for your answer and sorry for this (maybe) stupid question..I'am a beginner in this 'sound world'... I feel more comfortable in visuel art (paintings, prints, drawings) ;-)..my pleasure in music is to 'illustrate in sounds' (and some rythm too ;-)) my paintings,.... so I'm more interested in expérimental, atmospheric dark, ambient, space..:-)..thankss...

Manu Cègo With the Monomachine you can't record sounds at all into the machine. It has a tiny sound memory though. You can prepare tiny waveforms that the Monomachine can use for playback, but it's more like single waveforms rather than a whole recording.

Thank you very much for that great tutorial! After watching your first octatrack (with piano&vocals) I also bought one and I am still happy! For me its the most versatile sampler with the plus of amazing midi sequencer and tLooper on the market!

I have one ordered... and am trying to setup my audio pool.... IF I want to have one main area where I always load my samples from... How is the folder structure handled.... In the manual it says 1024 folder and file limit. Seems like 64GB on a card is overkill if you can only have 1024 files in your library. or... Does this mean I can have 1024 folders with up to 1024 samples per folder?

Makes an intimidating machine look fun! Also love the creativity that goes into your tutorials, it is way more helpful than videos where someone just pushes buttons really fast to generate and play a generic track. This video is more like the way I work, and both demystifies and humanizes this somewhat foreboding piece of gear! Thank you.

You say what i think when i hear the word Elektron. Its a very good system, but my AnalogKeys is almost untouched in the corner...... waiting for the bridge coming out, its probably an opener for me then to use the AK more often
