As promised, here's part 2 of my "quickie" fall garden tour. Part 3 will be available tomorrow (10/6).
Corrections for the blonde moments:
The fruit tree nursery raised bed contains: 5 grafted heirloom apple trees, scion wood from my Granny Smith apple tree (this was an experiment to see if rooting scion wood could be successful. I had attempted this with several different types of apples and some pear scion wood. So far, the Granny Smith's are the only ones who have survived.), one nasturtium (I believe it was an Orchid Flame variety), some recently planted broccoli plants, plus a dandelion, a lemon balm and a whole bunch of Golden Marguerite that will be relocated.
I will be digging up the apple trees in late winter and either planting them into the ground where I want them to go or into pots to continue growing. If any of the Granny Smith root cuttings actually grow roots & survive the winter, they will be going into pots.
Next year, if I continue the scion wood rooting experiment, I will keep the grafted trees separated from the scion wood cuttings. The ultimate height differences made it difficult to mulch & protect from sun damage.
I have definitely become a proponent for the use of shade cloth in the garden. The young apple trees in the nursery bed did much better than other purchased potted fruit trees I planted this year and I think it's because of the sun shade. I have very little natural shade in my garden; only the ease side of my house aka the back yard gets afternoon shade. I am thinking about how I can provide some sun protection for a larger portion of my garden for next year. If I am successful, we will definitely have a cooler summer next year: Murphy's Law!
The plant in the tub with the elderberry is a type of plantain, not dock.
At one point, after discussing that the tomato plants weren't performing well, I stated that I needed to remove the pepper plants. I did mean the tomatoes. The peppers will stay until frost.
For those of you asking why I didn't just remove the wild blackberries growing in the trash can/white half barrel planters; I actually did try, but....blackberries are very tenacious. Very often, if you leave even a small portion of the original plant behind, it will regrow...with a vengeance! I'll try again this winter when the plants are dormant. And no, I don't want to spray any herbicides on them.
Note: The picture of Granny Smith apples is not from my tree...but I can dream!
