It is a statement made directly to others out of respect, not a hippy slogan. Accuracy matters to people. And owning their language is important rather than having it usurped and mistranslated by others.

It’s not being “negative” to point out when someone’s culture and language was misrepresented. If your ancestors had been pushed onto reservations and robbed of their ancestral homes - maybe you’d have more empathy for why people are protective of native languages.

I live in the rural western side of the Catskills and the wildflowers that grow every month over the summer is amazing. I moved here 15 years ago from Rochester and I have been picking wildflowers the whole time. It’s like a treasure hunt. Yet they mow down more and more of the side of the road and fields killing the wild flowers . It sucks !!! I have also gone thru ditches and up steep hills to get at the beautiful wild flowers and no ticks !! The butterflies however are amazing 🙂🦋
