I live right on an Olympic National forest boundary sorta close to Lake crescent. I have been picking mushrooms since I was a kid, but I love learning as much as I can about the land that surrounds me. Even though my day job is in fact...logging hahaha hate me if you wish but i love these woods far more than anyone, but yea man, i hate it when we end up logging ground that i use to pick on. However, we also replant it immediately, and i have found more mushrooms in the reprod than i should admit.. it all comes back! Don't hate loggers lol, we are just long term farmers of the lands we love! Thanks for the great input. If you have the time,you should make a trip out west bud, this year definitely started off super slow, with the mushrooms coming in kinda slow, but as you know...Forks Washington is no stranger to torrential downpours, and October seems to be the start of the wet seasons for us...like once it starts it seems like it will never stop. After 46 years of it, i find it tiresome but the mushrooms love it!!

I love your area! I’ve been there several times. I’ve seen the commercial mushroom buyers there too. My kids thought the place was odd, but I understand what a cool place you live in. I also am a woodworker but feel that old growth should never be cut, not anymore. Just be a tree farmer from now on. Europe has been logged for centuries and the only have farmed trees now , it is not the same, not at all. We need the old growth. Thanks for the videos
@kiphenricksen60293 жыл бұрын
@@andrewblack7852 well the Olympic National Park is almost one million acres of no touch (that includes mushrooms unfortunately) but it has been a long time since we've sent an old growth to any mill. Hell I don't think there is a mill left in our area that takes anything ABOVE 19 inches in diameter! That pretty much protects the big trees for future generations. They were incredibly difficult to remove anyways haha! Thank you for the kind response, and again for the well thought out and informative video! Maybe I'll bump into you out here someday!

I always used to see the little holes and wonder what made them. Then one day I was hunting and was posted up at a spot overlooking a grassy meadow and a little squirrel joined me. He kept finding mushrooms and taking little bites and flinging pieces of it everywhere! Then he would take it way up into his tree. He was also grabbing pinecones and eating them like a little corn on the cob. It was super cute. So if you see piles of chewed up pinecones at the bases of trees and stumps, you know a squirrel buddy was around.

@@mushroomwonderland1 Hi, my name is Chris and I just relocated to Washington. I really enjoyed this video and I am wondering if there are plentiful mushrooms in my area. I am in the military and only here for a year so any help will be appreciated. I know that you would not give up your prized hunting grounds, but can you at least tell me what region you are in? I live in Redmond and I have been looking for mushrooms around here, but no substantial finds. I did find some shaggy manes a couple of weeks ago and they were delicious. Other than that, just some from the bolete genre at Costco. Are you in South Washington? I heard that the Olympic peninsula is great, but it is far from Redmond. Thanks in advance.
@mushroomwonderland13 жыл бұрын
@@christopherstacy5336 unfortunately I'm not incredibly familiar with the area up near redmond. I would look for state parks and wooded areas. If you can get over to i-90 and head east, take highway 18 exit up to tiger mountain, that's a big area of Conifer Forest that's good for foraging. I do technically live on the Olympic peninsula, but I'm often foraging in an area known as the Tahuya State forest. You can Google that. Or Green mountain area around Bremerton washington. There's a large area of public land near Port Gamble that I forage in often. But it's quite a journey for you. The great thing about Western Washington is there are Conifer forests all over the place, and state and national parks are a good place to start. Check the rules on mushroom hunting in the particular Park you're going to. The general rule is 1 gallon per day, up to 3 gallons of three different species, but the rules do vary. Good luck out there I hope you find some good mushies!

I love these videos, thank you. I'm thinking about joining the crew, I live in Kitsap. But I don't like to eat them, can't do it. What hunting does for me, is forces me to be in the moment, look around, appreciate being in the wild. Force the constant whirlwind of thoughts to take a backseat to being in the moment. On today's lunchtime walk with the dog I found quite a few puffballs, thriving way too close to the sidewalk to be safe to eat. But I looked they're good and white, I remembered on a previous video you said if they're white they're still good, which means I'm actually retaining the info too! Thanks!
@trav99023 жыл бұрын
Join them, won't hurt. Stay on the fringe if that helps at the start. Good people. No one will force you to eat a mushroom. There is a thing called "a no thank you helping". You can taste a properly cooked mushroom and spit it out if you choose. Sort-of like wine tasting. You may be suprised. Just have fun an go at your own pace and keep an open mind.

@mushroomwonderland13 жыл бұрын
I highly suggest following Facebook pages if you are on facebook. The Pacific Northwest Mushroom identification forum is a really great one for this area. So is mushroom foraging and identification, as well as fungus identification. It's the way I can keep the most up-to-date on name changes and a good way to see all the different various appearances of the same species. You get a real idea for what's growing around your area that exact time of the year. I also downloaded a program called mushroom Matchmaker, I think that it goes by a different name but you could probably Google Matchmaker mushrooms and find the program. It's very in-depth database that helps you to break down mushrooms by each identifying feature and it narrows it down to the most likely species. It's incredibly accurate and effective once you learn how to use it. I highly suggest it.

the mushroom with the red stuff is very toxic

No, Hydnellum Peckii is not toxic, I am more alive than ever after licking the red guttation! It's actually a highly medicinal mushroom containing polysaccharides and compounds known to be anticoagulants, it also can combat Alzheimer's disease. It does have a little bit of a bitter taste but there's nothing toxic about it.

You repeat yourself to much without saying if the mushroom in your hand can be eaten or not!

DONT pull up a cauliflower mushroom!!! CUT IT, IT GROWS BACK EVERY YEAR IF YOU CUT IT! I can’t believe you just told everyone who see this to just yank them up, don’t you READ? Please, know your stuff before you send people out to destroy their future harvests. I’m completely shocked!
