CLIP DESCRIPTION:
While collecting scrap railroad tracks, the Rocket Boys get a scare when they hear a train coming.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
NASA engineer Homer H. Hickam, Jr.'s autobiography provided the basis for this drama about a teenager coming of age at the dawn of the space race. In 1957, Homer Hickam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a high school student in Coalwood, West Virginia when the Soviet Union launches Sputnik, the first man-made satellite. While most of his friends and neighbors react with fear or distrust, Homer is instantly fascinated and begins studying everything he can find on jet and rocket design. While many of Homer's friends are puzzled by his new obsession, several new friends share his enthusiasm, and with the encouragement of his teacher (Laura Dern), Homer and his fellow "Rocket Boys" begin designing and launching their own homemade missiles. However, Homer's father (Chris Cooper) takes a dim view of his son's interest in rockets and is convinced Homer's future should be the same as his own, working in the local coal mines. October Sky mixes the drama of traditional family conflicts with a nostalgic glimpse of life in the mid-50's and a look at the earliest days of our journey into space.

The Norfolk & Western retired its last steam locomotive in 1960.
@TheAtlantaRailfan
@TheAtlantaRailfan 3 жыл бұрын
The N&W railroad ran steam long after most other railroads transitioned to diesel with the last one being retired in 1960 this was because at the time N&W steamers were more powerful than diesels so it was better to use one steam locomotive per train than 2 diesels. The most powerful 4-8-4 northern ever built were the N&W j class locomotives with a tractive effort of 84,981 pounds the F7a a new diesel model at the time had a tractive effort of 40,000 pounds and the N&W also had the Y6a 2-8-8-2 which had a tractive effort of 166,000 pounds so it would take 5 diesels to pull a train that one Y6a could pull but by 1959 newer diesels had been released that were stronger and easier to maintain and on October 24th, 1959 the last revenue steam trip on the N&W was pulled by N&W 611. By 1960 all of the N&W steam locomotives were officially retired one of the last steam holdouts in the country had completely dieselized but the N&W still ran steam 7 years after one of its main competitors the southern railway had completely dieselized in 1953. Several N&W steam locomotives still exist today and many still run like N&W 611 the last of the J class left and Strasburg 475 a former N&W 4-8-0 now running on the Strasburg railway in Pennsylvania.

We did this film in April, 1998. Four of us from TVRM went with the locomotive. NS would not allow 4501 to pull the train, so NS supplied diesels to tow up to the movie set. Once we were on scenc, the art department spent a few days painting the locomotive and hopper cars as N&W equipment. Then O. Winston Link arrived on set to do the cameo appearance as the train engineer. The actual engineer, a TVRM crew member, ducked out of sight for the shot. Bill Purdie was not at all involved in this movie production. I am running 4501 the first and last time you see it in the film.

The four of us from TVRM that went split into two team of two (engineer and fireman). For the O. Winston Link scene (the clip shown here), the other crew was on the locomotive. I was the engineer for the scene showing just the driving wheels with steam coming out of the cylinder cocks and the daytime scene of the steam locomotive going over the creek bridge.

When I took my cab ride in Southern #630 on the Missionary Ridge Local to the shop in July 2011, I actually got to stand on the running board of Southern #4501 in the shop. Hopefully I will be able to ride #4501's cab once it is restored.

When I was young, I used to wander the still operating line running by my grandparents house and collect old rusted metal, so log as it wasn't part of the track itself. If it was lying on the side, however, it was mine. By the time I had stopped(as I found out I was breaking the law by trespassing and potentially stealing), I had a good pile of spikes, bolts and fishplates. We ended up throwing them away, not sure if we just wanted to get rid of them or if we knew selling them would incriminate us. I was 10 at the time, and the memories still live on.

I think I might have found 3 goofs in this entire scene: 1:36 The rail was closer to the other pieces of rail, but at 1:38, it's a bit further away from where it once was. 1:54 Notice how there's just one track? At 2:01, a junction just magically appears. And at 1:48, more of the track is seen, but at 1:58, more of the track was taken apart.

This is one of my favorite scenes in the movie as well, which I remember watching for the first time in Chemistry class eight years ago. Of course, as you can probably guess from my profile picture, my interest lies more in seeing the actual locomotive than in the underlying science of rocket building. Furthermore, as proof of how much of a railroad nut I am, I believe the engine in this scene is Southern Railway #4501, a 12-wheeled (2-8-2) locomotive built in 1911 in Philadelphia.

I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but the movie was actually filmed in Tennessee. Despite this, I do give props to the film crew for painting the engine in a N&W scheme, which would be appropriate for WV. At the same time, however, N&W did not own any mikados (at least not to my knowledge). Also the cameo with O. Winston Link was a nice touch.

This movie was filmed not too far from where I grew up. 4501 was formerly K&T Railway 12. She’s still “The First Lady of Stearns” to us McCreary County boys.

It's weird how both October Sky and The Iron Giant came out in 1999 and they both featured scenes where a railroad was dismantled for its steel, but then the train comes and they try to put it back, but are unable to do so.

One of the best scenes in the movie. First time you see that, you're as scared of the crash as the boys are.

So there's Fried Green Tomatoes with A&WP 290, and October Sky with Southern 4501. Damn, the 90s were taking locomotives in their southern landscapes it seems.

For some reason they decided to use a Southern 2-8-2 mikado type locomotive, which is strange because the N&W never owned any 2-8-2 engines. Instead they used 4-8-0 mastadon types also known as “Mollies”. Why use an old Southern engine that’s already been running since the 1980s and isn’t even historically correct when the Strasburg Railroad up in PA just restored N&W 4-8-0 mastadon type #475 aka “Mollie,”. 6 years prior? It seems weird to me.

It is the southern 4501, I have seen it many times in person during the 90's at the town of Appalachia,Virginia Coal/railroad days, wearing her beautiful southern green paint job, it now belongs to the Tennessee Valley Railroad and has be repainted in blah.

Here's the funny thing: Norfolk and Western never owned any Mikados; they preferred the 4-8-0 Mastodon due to their adhesive weight.
