Thank you. This time of year can be quite negative for gardeners doing tropical style gardens in the U.K. especially. I try to use it as a way of planning and improving to keep me excited about the garden.

Your garden looks great. I have only just started with the tropical style and expect it to take alot of time to get anywhere near to what you have. It is the aim though! I am already taking stock of how things have gone this year and planning for the next. Thanks for your video.

Great garden, really good example of using evergreens. I've seen the Pittosporum look like an amazing specimen tree when crown lifted to 7ft. Maybe you could try that and have extra room for underplanting.

Stunning garden mate. Absolute love the circular design and how many statement palms/plants you have surrounded by companion planting to create such a beautiful jungle effect. If you can I'd save the laurel. Although an aggressive grower, they're amazing winter cover for local birds and like you say, provides shelter and microclimate for your tropicals. Perhaps just undercutting the lower branches to bring the canopy up (and into a tree form) may work for you?
@tikitropicals65
@tikitropicals65 Жыл бұрын
Thank you. I like curves and circular designs. I feel it gives more dimension to the planting area as plants can be seen from more angles than if planted in straight lines. I will keep the laurel but I think I will prune it back in spring. Cheers

Your garden is great, lovely and lush looking, I only started to use tropical style plants last year in one section of my garden, the rest just usual UK garden plants. Thinking f committing to full tropical, my trouble is planning and spacing.
@tikitropicals65
@tikitropicals65 Жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you. Regarding planning and spacing it’s not always easy because some Tropicals can grow so quick in one season. To start you need good sized borders to allow space for them to grow then concentrate on getting the backbone plants in that stay out all year. Give them the room they need to grow then fill all the gaps with plants like Cannas and Dahlias etc. These will fill the gaps while the others grow. I’m hoping to do some more videos on creating tropical gardens in spring so hopefully that may help. Cheers

Your garden still looks pretty darn good to me even your so called "trouble areas". I personally appreciated the commentary and your thoughts on what you might do, as you have done a fantastic job with the layout and design. That Trachy hybrid stood out to my eyes from the get go, I was going to ask you what it was. As well I agree with you on getting many of these plants as small specimens as they settle in better and grow pretty darn quick. Most of my palms were purchased for under $50, so so starting a garden like this can be done at a reasonable cost. It is all up to time like you say. I've always focused on the evergreen plants as I like to enjoy my garden year round, and my hot dry summers make it a chore to baby the water loving plants here in Oregon ,USA. I look forward to your changes for next year.

@@tikitropicals65 As far as palms I have 20+ species in the ground without protection, all what would be considered cold hardy species. A few Trachycarpus species, Chamaerops, Rhapidophylum hystrix, Chamadeorea radicalis and microspadix, Butia species, Various Sabal species and a couple Livistona. I also have some Butia hybrids I am growing out at the moment. We usually see highs around 40C in summer and lows typically are -4C a few nights in winter. We rarely have a day fail to go above freezing - seems to be about every other year. Rainy in winter and No rain in summer so its a challenge. Just about everything you have in your garden I have in mine.

Lovely garden. I would be interested to see what evergreens you will be planting. I basically started my hardy tropical garden late last year and really don't want to be looking at a bare garden in Winter. I have the usual Fatsia varieties in a shady border along with a number of ferns. But really would like to fill out both my full sun and shade border with evergreens.

Great looking space and interesting video. You mention you have young Fatsia P. 'Needhams' - do you sell any? I've been wanting to get hold of one for a while.

Hi thank you. I do have Fatsia Polycarpa but they are still small plants. Not much bigger than seedlings. When they are bigger I will do a video showing their progress and then when they are bigger healthier plants I would be willing to sell. To be honest I can’t see the difference between Needhams form and the mass produced Fatsia Polycarpa Green Fingers and I’ve grown both. I just think the Greenfingers was renamed for sales reasons when it went through tissue culture.

It’s a tricky question as it depends what palms you have. If you have feather palms like Butias and date palms then pinnate leaves won’t look as good as they would against palmate leaves like Trachycarpus as you want a contrast between leaf shapes.

@@tikitropicals65 That gives me hope as my favourite part of the house is actually the garden, I just want a decent size and it to be a tidy exotic garden like yours . I would like to create a exotic garden as it reminds me of being on holiday. I love palm and banana trees. My favourite flowers are roses, gardenia, fragpini and jasmine. I love the scent too. I know these are tropical flowers but I have heard that there is a variant of the gardenia which can grow here.
