October Tropical Garden update

Well, its the end of October let’s see what has been done and still needs doing to prepare the garden for the winter ❄️

@@OurEnglishTropicalGarden I used a wicking system to feed my Rocoto Montufar pepper plant over winter, a big bottle of water with some gardening wick, cos like you I didn't fancy too many cold treks to water it. I was lucky I only had one plant to worry about, you have quite a few there!

Great video. Sorry to hear of your loss. The agave pups can probably just be separated from the mother plant and potting up. I do this with my Americana but I’d wait until spring now

Great video. Thank you and very sorry to hear of Roger passing. His voice is instantly recognisable to me. I'm sure he would be very proud of the video as well as your work in garden. Think it's pretty normal for cordyline leaves to occasionally look sad, likely nothing worry about.

Thank you for your condolences. I'm thankful Roger left the videos as I have something to refer back to and learn. We did look after the garden together but he had the most knowledge. Thanks also for the comment re the cordyline leaves. It is very mature so I will just have to see how it goes over the winter.

Thank you, The fish are very mature now and slowing as the water cools down. They are very calming and I sit by the pond often

Just leave the Tetrapanax. Fully hardy at that size. You will lose the leaves, but don't worry. They will grow back in spring. Also do not wrap the tree fern, yet. What until frost is forecast and either place straw of fleece in the centre to protect the crown an base of the fronds. Also do not leave the fleece on if the weather is not freezing or frosty. Usually there is no need to wrap the whole plant. May be a foot or two at the top around the trunk.

Thank you for taking the time to respond, I have some knowledge but the garden was Roger's inspiration so I'm learning and am sure there will be some mistakes along the way. So your advice is greatly received. I have the fleece ready amd waiting. As for the Tetrapanax that is a relief

Saw your post on Reddit, sorry for your loss. I’ve just realised I used to watch your husbands garden videos sometimes. The Ensete maurelii red banana you have moved in to the greenhouse…did your husband used to do this? My experience is that they need to be either dry stored or grown inside for the winter if they are small. Just wanted to check so you can keep it healthy ready to carry on growing next year.

I like the koi pond. Just out of curiosity, are the fish fine in winter or does the pond have to get covered up?

The fish are fine, they slow down and just go down deeper near the bottom. We seldom get it cold enough to freeze. I keep air input all year and a pond pump running all year too. Thanks for your interest

I most certainly did Patrick. But, I'm not moving it again! I managed to pull it onto a chair and swiveled the legs from side to side Yes, that was rather foolish, strange the things we do to prove we can be independant.
