I just sat through your Octoprint video. Many people producing videos are not teachers. They don’t take the time to explain what they are about to do and why before going through steps on how to do it. You do. Great job. I spent 45 years in adult education. My first computer was an Apple II. I’ve been playing around with Raspberry Pi’s. I won’t buy a Canakit. I just went into my closet and pulled out two Raspberry Pi 4bs,, 2 power supplies and 2 Pi cameras. 3D printers are becoming my retirement hobby. Thank you for making this fun. My Voxelab Aquila just had its SD card reader die. You just showed me how to solve the problem. A Creality Ender V2 is on the way. I expect a week from now I’ll have both humming.. you just turned frustration into excitement. Thank you so much.

I honestly don't need this guide at all but I stumbled on it while looking for something else. I skipped around a bit out of curiosity and I liked how you go into sometimes excessive detail for even minute things, like defining trivial stuff like what a plugin is. It's nice to see an exhaustive guide for people new to the hobby. I only got started about 6 months ago and I'm a pretty advanced user now, but I used to consider long-format videos on basic stuff like this an absolute godsend when I was still a beginner,

Worked with several windows open so I could pause the video then switch to complete each step. Once completed continued on and it all works as explained and shown. Great job in creating the video (without the expansive technical language that not everyone understands) and for helping me out. A great video as usual.. easy on the ears for people getting started.. It may be worth mentioning though, that for people who doesn't have good and fast Internet (not everyone does) you are able to download the recent octoprint image and import the image into the 'pi imager software" Also a safety message.. Some printers try to draw power from USB and plugging in may make the printer display light dimly. This is a dangerous situation that can harm your printer and in extreme circumstances destroy your USB bus, maybe even cause fire.. If you plug in your printer and it lights dimly, stop and look for the fix online - it's well documented. I had this issue and simply cut a section of the red wire (v++) from the USB cable and wrapped it in electrical tape. No more issue and a safe working environment..

I love using Octoprint on my Pi, but I did add a touch screen to my Raspberry Pi running OctoScreen for when I am directly playing with the printer. Only confusion I have is the naming of the Pi vs the Octoprint instance and the various user names and PW. It is working perfectly. Thanks for the very helpful instruction.
@AstroSmoke.3 жыл бұрын
Hi Irv, with the vast majority of 3D printers you need to use USB isolators between your Pi and printer. Especially true if you use the ethernet connection on the Pi. Two reasons, one, a lot of the control boards pull voltage back through usb from the Pi, an isolator depending on type can limit current draw or stop this happening. Two, printer shorts or poor earthing, which is very common with the cheap printers. Voltage from 12v/24v/115v/220v can short to ground and track down the shield of the usb which will fry the Pi and peripherals and if connected by ethernet your whole house hold network. An example, this happened on Tripod's garage with a CR6SE recently.

Improvement - At roughy 13:00-13:20-ish, when you're putting on the heat-sinks - "...there's nothing magical about that." "OK, now that I have the heat sinks on, and my SD card is all done..." How much time should we expect to pass during ""? 10 seconds? 10 minutes? An hour? 10 hours? 10 days? When do we start suspecting there's something not going right? As I type this, I'm roughly 20 minutes since hitting the "WRITE" button, and getting only sporadic updates of the progress bar, currently showing "writing... 34%", and hasn't moved for several minutes. Oops, I lie - just ticked to 36%... Point being, how long should the process be expected to take in real-world clock-time, versus "This chunk of the video is long and boring - chop it out of the final version" time?

Thanks for the info, very well done and I had no difficulty following the instructions. Did this twice, at work I found the network so slow, at home the Pi installer took less than 2 minutes. Great advice re setting up network settings, etc. during installation (to the SD card). Question: Is there anything that I need to do to a new Ender 6 aside from the USB connection? Should the power pin on the USB be disabled so that the cable is data-only? (I'll update the vendor-supplied image and screen layouts according to Creality first, if this is recommended.) Finally, I added the BLTouch devide to the Ender 6. Should I do both the BLTouch plug in on the printer and also on the PI? Or, could I rely on the Ender's bed levelling algorithm to do this task? Is the BLTouch plugin needed on the Pi for the Bed Visualizer on the Pi?

@MakeWithTech3 жыл бұрын
@@TabletopThoughts Well you should have plenty of Raspberry Pi power. The easiest way to check the CPU type is to check with the manufacturer. In addition, if you are running Marlin 2 you are probably on a 32-bit system. If you are using proprietary firmware it is likely 8bit and the control board might just be too slow.

Great video, very helpful in setting up Octoprint. However, one thing not addressed in anyone's Octoprint setup video is the fact that the Raspberry Pi uses a dynamic IP address by default. If you shut your Pi down and restart it later, there is an excellent chance the IP address will be changed and you'll (1) have to figure out what the new IP address is, and (2) modify your Cura printer profile so Cura can find the Octoprinter. Changing the Pi from a Dynamic to Static IP isn't particularly difficult but it can be a little intimidating to someone not used to editing Config files. Could you make a short video walking through the procedure to change the Pi to default to Static IP, both via Windows and Mac? Thanks.

is octopi still best or is there other images that trump that now for user friendly formality?

Irv, can you do a setup video for “octolapse”? I am running octoprint everywhere and it runs great, but have never gotten octolapse to work. GREAT video as ALWAYS! I’ve been running octoprint on my CR6 SE since I got it last sept. I’m running a Pi3. TIA! 😀
