Octopus Escapes - Storage Drawer - Episode 4

This 4th episode of the Octopus Escapes series was inspired by a comment from one of our beloved viewers. We always pay close attention to your remarks and we aspire to giving all of your requests a shot. Here is what Leanne commented:
“Can Zipper be able to open one of the plastic storage drawers from the inside? Let’s give it a shot to see how he can open the drawer and get out.”
This was a very intriguing experiment, as the octopus must exhibit a high degree of dexterity, intelligence, as well as coordination of its arms in order to achieve its escape. To push the drawer, the octopus has to figure out that it needs a steady surface where it can lean against to exert its strength.
It took only a few minutes for our octopus to understand that it can use some of its arms to steady itself on the top of the drawer and the rest to push the drawer open.
We were able to find completely transparent plastic storage drawers that enabled us to better observe the deft use of suckers and arms and to admire once again the wondrous escape capabilities of this amazing cephalopod, the octopus.

Oh, he seemed desperate to get out, and at one point I swear the thought went through his mind "What if I can't get out of here!" Then he went straight to his home as soon as he got out. Poor thing. Really showed octopus brilliance, but I think he got a little scared and just wanted the safety of home. Bless him.

I know almost nothing about octopuses. But it looks to me that this little guy was really distressed while imprisoned in the plastic drawer. Glad he made it out and got back to the safety of his home.

I agree, he swam to his safe place right after getting out of the drawer. Being closed up in a confined space and trying to get out is hard on any living thing.

I loved it when he got out he spread out all his legs as if to say "Yes, I did it"! It took more than 5 minutes so this was a real challenge.

Suggestion: Give one or more octopuses a "china marker" type marker that will write underwater on the sides of the tank. See whether they draw with it. Write something on the outside of the tank and see whether they attempt to write, or whether writing makes any impression on them

Gubbah: You might well be correct, but my point is there is not 100% certainty. I admit my observation is based only on what appears in these published videos. Perhaps there are unseen behaviors that indicate he knows it’s a game and is unstressed... much like a dog wagging its tail while playing fetch. It might be useful for this content provider to address this in a future video.

@@TheAstroflight Given how many people try to make their cats into vegans despite them being obligated carnivores, insisting that they can just supplement that away without any regard to what the cat wants, this is probably depressingly correct. Well, unless the animal is seen as a monster. Where I live, we have a serious population problem with a lot of herbivore creatures (mainly deer and turkey, mostly from lack of predation vs. habitat destruction) because people keep proclaiming that we need to kill more mountain lions and bears because, gasp, they kill things. No shit - it's the actual natural order. Even though there have been no human deaths and only a handful of pet deaths, people insist the more 'dangerous' animals should be killed off more. Maybe pay attention to your pets, don't let your kids wander off into the forest alone, and apply to the Feds if one of your sheep out of hundreds gets dragged off for compensation. It's amazing to me that humans have gotten so spoiled in the last century that any kind of meat-eating by any living creature is looked down upon and seen as barbaric while squawking about how they embrace nature.

Ever since the lantern video, I look for colour flashes after achieving the escape. I've only noticed them for the lantern - he did not seem happy that time! Was that the first 'escape' test, or possibly the most confined? Maybe he is now confident, from memory and experience, that he will never be genuinely trapped in anything small by his Octolab friends.

I once saw a video that had a fish in a mobile tank that was rigged to move in whichever direction the the fish was trying to swim. Have you considered giving your subjects a mobile tank to see where they drive it? They could use a joystick...they are smart enough to learn. What would they do with the relative independence? Would they visit specific people/places?

The colors tests were interesting. I've been wondering if an octopus would prefer a hiding space lit by certain colors over others, if complete dark wasn't possible. This Storage Drawer episode inspired me to ask. Might be done with containers against the corners?

A reasonable challenge that they can conquer in a short amount of time isn't torture. Intelligent animals in captivity grow bored and unhappy when not given enrichment like this that are similar to challenges they face in the wild. Think of it this way: escape rooms for humans aren't torture, they're challenges that you have to strive to complete--there's a limit of usually an hour and if you are struggling, you can get help. I think a food reward at the end would have been great, though.

This gave me an idea. place a food item inside a clear version of the nested Russian wooden dolls. Maybe made out of clear lucite? Drill a few holes here and there so the crab can breathe. See if he octopus can open it and how long it takes.

show him how a drawer works first. unless you already did. to demonstrate its ability to learn quickly how we do things like opening a jar when shown he will know to twist instead of guessing a long time. human things are alien to it as it is alien to us.

I didn't like that experiment. I could tell he or she was getting stressed out because the skin tone was getting dark and I could feel the frustration and stress. If it was down the other way around that he or she could try to get himself in at least that wouldn't have been as stressful on the animal.
