We're driving access to cheaper, greener ‘people-led’ renewable energy across the UK. We believe that people living near a wind turbine should enjoy cheaper electricity when their local Fan is spinning - and for thousands of customers of customers across the UK, this is already a reality thanks to Fan Club.

How do you choose sites for the turbines? Do you have a website/email/link for potential sites?

Hey Mike, we have 4 sites already set up but if you think this would be a good fit for your community then you can let us know here 👉 www.octopusenergygeneration.com/fan-club/ 🐙

T’s & C’s state it is not available for those who are already on an octopus smart tariff! But it looks well worth it for anyone who is not. 😊

What happens when the Turbine is oversubscribed at some point and of course when the wind does not blow enough or at all? No discount presumably? Naturally these turbines are not directly connected to a subscriber's home, just to the grid as any others, so it could be any turbine, anywhere that Octopus chooses to say this is 'your' turbine. So, another form of controlling 'your' power usage in their favour (no doubt you will have to have a Smart Meter installed too). Of course this idea is discriminatory meaning that those who live in windy areas get a potentially big advantage whilst those in much less windy areas get a lot less and how will you know?

@@sirjohng1 The point is to reduce nimby objections to having the wind turbine in the first place, as the current planning laws require local support for onshore wind. Hopefully those laws will be changed with the next government. There is a reality that electricity costs different prices at different times, and people prepared to shift some of their usage to when its windy/sunny etc can exploit that. Stick to not having a smart meter and you can only have a flat price.

Hey there, unfortunately, the Octopus Fan Club does not work alongside smart tariffs, as it is in itself a smart product. This means that in order to join the Octopus Fan Club, you will need to be on a standard fixed or flexible tariff. 🐙

1970's oil will run out in 10yrs Answer raise tax 1980's Ozone loss will kill all living things Answer raise tax on certain items 1990's ice caps are going to melt Answer raise taxation 2000's link it with natural changes to weather patterns Answer raise taxation If any of this were true do you not think governments would ensure changes were done where the majority could afford change not just the few

My question is....Why if the National grid in the last 12 months rolling average has produced a kwh of electricity for 7.3p I pay on average 30p kwh from Octopus who gets all the extra 22.7p that I have to pay? Seems like someone is making a nice chunk of change and that is not counting the daily charges, which for gas normally cost me more per month than the gas I use and half the cost of my electricity bill during the summer months. My own opinion is it is just one big scam to screw people out of as much money as possible

Because you are comparing a 24x7 average to your usage which is probably at more expensive times of the day. Switch to Octopus Agile and you'll be paying a rate directly related to the wholesale price and changes every 30 minutes, or Octopus Tracker which is a daily average price, then you can exploit the times prices are lower, eg running a washer/dryer/dishwasher at a cheap time. I have an average unit price of about 8p as I have a battery that charges on the cheapest rates and powers the house the rest of the day.

Fine if you're on average wage or above or live in a property where solar panels can be placed or even a safe place to put a battery in the completely possible chance they catch fire like phone and car batteries

Yes you don't own anything may I try to make an effort to explain that the discount scheme is to encourage communities to allow onshore wind farms to be in an area and those permitting such a scheme should benefit from it by way of a discount. Yes less windy places are very likely not going to benefit. In much wider distribution network wind turbines, solar, wave, hydroelectric and nuclear will allow us to be free from imports of oil/coal and secure in energy and cheaper power.
